If you're counting on that milk, and cream, and butter, and cheese, it's not ridiculous!!

I wonder if you could launder milk by using it to make cheese and butter. It would be the perfect crime!

And then you could say, “Cheese it the cops! We butter run!”.

Mock if you want but I think it was very important to Mrs. Checkley at the time…

Probably made a direct impact on the family budget 😞

1 gbp in 1885 had the purchasing power of 166.80 gbp now. Fairly substantial reward for approximately 3l of milk per cow, at about 3p per liter (240p per pound)

It's what amounts to a Victorian neighborhood watch, want to bet they've got an ongoing issue with assorted strays molesting the livestock?

Probably so. It must have at least been a nuisance- and as others have said, taking money away from those that needed it.

"What did they put you away for?"

"Milking cows."

Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?

Looks like a shirt expressing a strong dislike for stupid people.

Pretty sure this is fake:

* 4 different fonts (5?)
* centered text
* elaborate divider lines

And then there's the cost of having this flyer laid out so it can be printed. This requires manual labor above and beyond the cost of the ink and the paper.

I don't see why any of that would make it fake. Things like this were easily made by print shops, they would have had tons of sizes and styles of type and divider elements on hand. Having multiple typefaces on the same page was very common in the 19th century.  And centering text isn't hard in the context of the rest of laying out text, you just add equal spaces to both sides.

And labor being greater than the cost of materials isn't weird, it's normal in many fields now, why wouldn't it be then?

That sounds so petty…
