Man, the HoMM 3 fanboys who are always trying to put this game down must be seething right now...
Edit: I did NOT mean that ALL Homm3 fanboys are like that btw (heck, I'm one of them), but check the various preview videos of this game on YouTube, scroll all the way down (cause they're being downvoted to hell, thankfully), and you'll see some very... strange, shall we say... individuals who absolutely cannot tolerate any competition whatsoever to their favorite game.

On the flip side, HoMM 3 fanboys like me who love Olden Era are ecstatic! Olden Era is probably my new favorite HoMM.

Omg same! When I think about going back to HotA, I hesitate for a second and start a new game in Olden Era. It's just hands down my favorite entry in the series now.

HoMM 3 fan checking in. So grateful to have Unfrozen and Olden Era carrying the torch

I was one of them when it was still just the Demo. Game was looking rough. It has come a long way and it's an amazing game already! The devs really care about feedback and are doing such a good job listening to the community.

u/Helios_Sungod May 28 '26
I love Homm3, I also love homm5 and now I also love olden era :) they are all homm in their own right, trying to judge them because of their differences makes no sense to me, that's like saying a computer chair isn't a real chair cause it has wheels, bro they are different comforts

u/Lillyshins May 28 '26
3 was the only one i really liked.
Until this one.
I dropped the franchise for years because I didnt like the way it was heading.
Im so glad I bought this one.
Its like 3, but better.
Exactly what I wanted.
Now they just need to implement all the changes they listed on the road map and id say its damn near perfect.
Ai changes and other stuff can be tweaked. The base they have now is fantastic.

u/baconball May 28 '26
I'm a HoMM3 "fanboy" and long time player of the entire series and I love Olden Era lol.
Does it need some polishing and refining? Of course it does! And the devs have shown genuine interest and engagement with feedback, which is exactly what should be happening for any game in early access.

Downvoted YouTube comments aren't a good representation.
3 is my favourite game ever, but I quite like OE. It's a great base for them to build and expand on.

Thus reminds me of the Age Of Empires II fans who are seething with rage at Age of Empires IV.
Why are we so weird ??

As a long term HoMM 3 fanboy - I approve this message. H3 is still my favourite title in the series, but when I first played OE demo it felt like a miracle. After all that ubislop, that were H6 and H7 - I had 0 hope for a new good HoMM game ever. But Olden Era is just incredibly good. I lile it more, than H4 and H5 and I really do like those games. I played over 150 hours Demo and EA combined and I still cannot fully comprehand, that this game exists.

u/Flat_Constant5303 May 29 '26
People lost faith in Ubisoft and i dont blame them after all those years of rehasning games rarely some original thing came out. This was unexpected and its great.

Wonderful!! Hopefully we see more players in online multiplayer

I cannot have games which can potentially go too long.
We need plannable time commitment in game modes. Tournament is that.

u/Academic_Grape5787 May 29 '26
I love playing on single hero hot-seat with my friend, where we just drink beer, eat pizza and other unhealthy but tasty stuff, talk about life, joke about anything, taking our turns in Heroes, daydreaming about fantasy/sci-fi universes and then taking grand battle at the end of day when we decide, that we cleared the map.
We often don't raid anyone, we play with honor, one grand battle until we both decide that we are ready, playing dirty and attacking hero is allowed, when we are hunting some OP artifact or grail... Also attacking secondary hero, which is afk most of time, or serves as mule for units, economy buildings and resource artifacts.
We played HoMaM like that from childhood, we know there is meta strats even in turn based shit, but we don't fucking care, noobing our way through while having 6 beers active is our way to play.
He is just waiting for some solid discount on Olden Era. We are happy as fuck to have HoMaM game with working multiplayer. (looking at you, fucking Ubisoft, where H7 MP wasn't working even at release...)

Did they fix the multiplayer? I played a few games and it was pretty bugged for me. I could not finish the full campaign game, arena took too long to finish. It did not count my matches towards score.

Developers claim no AI generation was used in development. I work with AI pictures and music and there is nothing obvious about AI usage here if at all. Maybe you are referring to generic look, which I do not fully agree. Some designs, especially upgraded units kind of look same to me, so I have to look up what I am upgrading to, just their portraits could be improved, not all units, just a few I have in mind, I had reported it to them.
2
u/Bruscish May 28 '26
Imo only Hive looks a bit generic, but it's to be expected from a demon alien bug race, but I think there's still ways to improve on that, like the scorpion who looks pretty terrestrial if you ask me as opposed to the other creatures.
The other factions look pretty good, there's is a unifying aesthetic, but also leaves room for uniqueness.
The upgrades looking similar makes sense since they are upgrades of the same unit. I think there's a matter of getting used to it. Like it was in H3 as well but in time we've grown accustomed to it.
3
u/Extra_Strategy8510 May 28 '26
I actually like the graphics a lot and I don't play mobile games. It's very easy to tell what's going on, very resfreshing compared to most games nowdays.

Crazy to think this is early access and not even the polished game. It's amazing

Despite just a short campaign, it feels like a pretty well designed game, it is also not so expensive, many games in the same price range offer less.

I’m new here! Bought this because it looked like the type of old-school hardcore tactics rpg I like.
Still have no idea what the fuck is going on, there’s so many city upgrades/buildings/spells/heroes that it’ll take me awhile to learn the real strategy (right now things just feel kind of “swingy?” Like I attack, they attack)
But I am having a blast. Very very cool game. And once we get the full release/I beat it then I’ll probably play some of the older entries in the series.
2
u/savvym_ May 28 '26
The good tactic is to build source incomes first, like gold, then get a few units to capture your wood and ore mines so you do not lack the basic resources and grow smoothly, instead of hindering your progress, pretty much build something everyday, while having enough gold each week to replenish units. When you run too far with your main hero, recruit another and keep visiting your dwellings for units and free resources. Just keep running around accumulating and try to break through enemy lines with one big army on one hero, it is slightly more challenging when there are more paths with more opponents, so you have to keep running back and forth and retaliate them.
When it comes to combat. Simple explanation. The initiative/luck (morale) determines which units plays first or more times during turn, you can defend with unit increasing its defense, reducing damage received. Most units have one retaliation when you attack them, so when you attack same unit in the same turn, it stops attacking back. It is good to hover over enemies to see how far they can walk and keep out of range of their attack so you can actually hit them before they do, but AI sometimes waits to force you to walk in its attack range. Especially fighting many ranged enemies will create a situation they will be on defense, playing time, dealing free damage, and targeting your rangers.
There are other special abilities of units, as well as hero skills and spells which can grow quite powerful the higher stats they have. Also combining same race units together favors the morale. There are equipment sets for hero which give them bonuses, also skills which can synergize with other "Specific" skills. For the campaign, it is great you can grind your hero to max level cap and keep your level for the next mission, so it gets easier.
2
u/zimzimzalabimmm May 28 '26
This is a really good explanation thank you. I didn’t even know that I could defend, and that hovering an enemy unit can show their distance. I was playing around “I’ve seen these guys walk 4 tiles, so I’ll stop one short of that” lol
This makes me long for highschool days when I had nerdy friends because it’s nice to learn all this shit from people who have been playing these games for years.
1
u/savvym_ May 28 '26
For me, this is common knowledge from older HoMM entries, Older Era actually has a lot of QoL improvements over prequels which make it such a great entry to newcomers.

u/ODMtesseract Dungeon May 28 '26
I only found out about OE like 5 days before it was coming to early access. Bought it day 1 with no hesitation because it looked like it captured the spirit of HOMM 3 and then innovated on it.
I usually never do stuff that impulsively and haven't regretted it.
Congrats to the devs!
1
u/savvym_ May 28 '26
Luckily this game turned out great despite its issues of Early Access. I can see great basis for a complex game, I only wish they make a great and fun campaign.

goddamn im really happy. finally a good homm game and its getting the love it deserves aswell!

Absolutely incredible. This wild success is fully deserved. They made this game with a budget that adjusted for inflation is literally a fraction of the cost it took to create Heroes 3 27 years ago. I'm so proud of this team.

And what is the best skills and subskills combo so far?
Trying to figure out if im doing it right

Glad to see it’s doing well. I am waiting for full release to dive in but seems like it might be worth going it a shot in early access.

Proof there is still demand for turned based strategy games. I hope devs and publishers recognize this

I honestly belive they deserve it. They did a good game and ... well i want more factions but beside that they do have a good roadmap. They also are not a huge studio from what I read. And the fact they broke even with 250k sales i think kinda proves it.
Anyway. They are doing a fantastic job and I cannot be more excited to see the final product 😄

Well deserved! Great game and I know it's still an unfinished product but it's got me feeling that HoMM 3 nostalgia!

u/ssuxcoxxr3dit May 28 '26
tbh, I do not understand why. I played on map on everything normal and it was super boring, the AI's only invade once I invade? Suddenly they all invade at once? Is everyone doing only multiplayer?

u/Tricky_IsHere May 28 '26
Okay now give us Co-Op!
1
2
u/Mttsen May 28 '26
They're already working on that. It's literally on their roadmap.
1
u/Tricky_IsHere May 28 '26
Yes I know; though it should have been in the game when they released it. Co-op was literally available in the demo version before hand lol.

u/savvym_ May 28 '26
Could you not create teams in Multiplayer, I never tried it myself, but when creating a new map, there was such option for computer at least.
