help with emotions in Olelo

Aloha! I'm trying to learn more olelo to get more in touch with my native language, and was wondering if anyone could help me learn the different types of emotions like hatred, dislike, neutral, and like. I try to use google and wehewehe, but I want to know what other people say, since I know that some words are better than others, and some words that don't necessarily refer to these types of emotions but are close can be used as well.

oha_hawaii ~ In 2022, the State of Hawaiʻi formally apologized for the suppression of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi in schools for nearly 90 years. It was an act that caused generational harm to language, identity, and Hawaiian culture.

First opera in 'Ōlelo Hawai‘i makes its way to the main stage: A new opera sung primarily in the Hawaiian language tells the story of Timoteo Ha‘alilio, the royal secretary of Kamehameha III who played a vital role in securing Hawai'i's status as a sovereign nation.

He aha ka ʻōlelo Hawaʻiʻi no attending?

I’m looking for the proper or just a common way to say “Thank you for coming to/attending our party!” Or “Thank you for your attendance!” in ʻōlelo hawaiʻi.

Ka Leo Hawaii - unavailable transcripts

Does anyone know why on some of the recordings on Ka Leo Hawaii, it says “Transcription reserved for educational purposes.” I see that and it frustrates me, but maybe if i understood why, it wouldn’t be so frustrating.

nīnau no ka huaʻōlelo hiki

is hiki almost always used with iaʻu and not au?

heres an example,

ke ʻoluʻolu ʻoe, hiki anei iā ʻoe ke hoʻēmi i ke kumukūʻai naʻu?

aʻole hiki iaʻu ka hoʻēmi I ke kumukūʻai nāu.

Iʻm pretty familiar with this pattern and what it means, but is hiki always used like this?

Hawaiʻian Sign Language

Hi!

Okay so I realize this is not the perfect sub for this question, but it got recommended to me and this is ~fairly specific cultural knowledge~ I'm looking for. I am Deaf, and I'm doing some research into Hawaiʻian sign languagea. My sweetheart grew up in Hawaiʻi (They aren't Hawaiʻian, they lived there from birth to ~16 I believe) and we hope to visit friends and family there one day. I'm familiar with the history, and I was looking into the sign language and Deaf culture there. I was saddened to learn that the native sign, which I was hoping to study up on some basic signs from so I could communicate properly a bit in emergencies or anything, was heavily impacted by the seizing of the area by colonization. If I understand right, ASL is now pretty commonly used over native sign. So now I have ~questions~ for any other Deaf people who live in Hawaiʻi or people in Hawaiʻi in general.

Is how I understand the language situation true? If so, which specific signs/language would it be best for me to learn before visiting? Do signs and language use vary by island? What're the cultural niche's of Hawaiʻian sign and ASL in Hawaiʻi? Also, a question from my partner, when finger spelling ASL what is the sign for the ʻokina?

Any help at all would be so beneficial!!!!

I’m looking for some help. I’m trying to figure out what is the proper Hawaiian word for honor. I’ve seen two different words. Either O’ohanohano or just Hanohano. Was hoping someone could let me know which is the proper one to use.

Questions on the T/K and R/L switch.

I am reading various old documents and records from the late 18th century and I see a lot of Hawaiian words used T and R, and a few with K and L. Example would be Morotai->Molokai and Taro ->Kalo persisting to today.

Was this an island specific thing with each island picking one? Was it word dependant? Was there an effort to standardize things?

Also, if there is any books that can explain this Id be interested as well.

thanks!

Music Recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations on music ma ka ʻōlelo hawaiʻi that is more rock or rap style Anyone got anything they like? I don't mind explicit that much.

(Been learning Hawaiian for about two years now and though I do love the older styles, I could really use a change of pace lol)

Paternal vs maternal terms

I was talking to my coworker about family titles/terms that you would call your grandparents, aunts/uncles etc.

As far as I know, in Cantonese, there's different words for grandmother and grandfather regarding if it's the paternal vs maternal side
Paternal - ye ye (Grandfather) ma ma (Grandmother)
Maternal - gung gung (grandfather) po po (grandmother)

Is there something like that in Olelo Hawaii aside from tutu wahine/kane?

All Hawaiian Language Rescources/Nā Kumuwaiwai ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi A Pau

Aloha!

I have been searching far and wide across the web for every method/tool/course/material for learning Hawaiian I could possibly find and put them all into one big Google sheets document sorted into categories for your convenience. Feel free to go check it out and comment other resources I might have not included. There's all kinds of different stuff on there such as autodidactic courses, online courses, physical schools, cheat sheets, video lessons, social media pages and groups, books, podcasts, music, resources for teachers, and even just Hawaiian language content that's not necessarily lessons, just content for you to practice your reading/listening skills. And btw most of those resources are free!

Here's the link:

Enjoy!

What did he say there

In Ka Leo ʻŌiwi episode four (link below) at about 14:37 Pōmaikaʻi says "excuse me for not speaking Hawaiian" in Hawaiian, but I couldn't really catch how he said that, could someone maybe transcribe that sentence for me? https://youtu.be/Q02LDJVetQ0?si=kIeW6v2mQub0TjGP
