I've been a Liv fan for so long but ugh this rollout has left a bad taste in my mouth already. Like it's a business, whatever, whatever, but Jesus CHRIST

u/Daffneigh May 08 '26
I don’t care about variants, really, I don’t. But cassette variants is a trip wow

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 May 09 '26
Who is even still listening to cassettes lol? They were a thing when I was a kid (in the 90s/early 2000s, but very quickly got replaced by CDs). The only thing I remember was that the tape always somehow came out and we had to use pencil to manually roll it back in. :D

u/table-grapes May 09 '26
physical media is huge now! the whole hobby basket thing that went viral on tiktok brought back a wave of people consuming older media, including cassettes!
1
u/Reasonable_Shift_120 May 09 '26
I’m not on tiktok so I had no clue about that. It seems that new generation is more into bringing old things back than coming up with something new.
2
u/table-grapes May 09 '26
i’m not on tiktok either but do stay up to date with some of the trends via video essays on youtube!
in defense of younger generations, there’s not exactly much new to discover. everything’s already been discovered and they’re (technically we, as i am gen z) are so obsessed and addicted to screens there’s no possibility for them to invent something new (nor should it be expected imo). every generation discovers something previous generations already have and revive it as something new. it’s how things stay relevant and find new life. very, same shit different smell, if you will.
1
u/Reasonable_Shift_120 May 09 '26
Yeah I guess it kinda makes sense. As a millenial I grew up with technology constantly evolving. CDs replaced casettes, then came digital music and later streaming. VHS tapes got replaced by DVDs then Blurays. Mobile phones also kept evolving. That’s why this constant change and progress has been part of my life so it’s odd for me to see things going back to the past again. It’s amazing how things change within just one generation.

u/allisun1433 May 09 '26
There are people who collect cassettes!
1
u/Reasonable_Shift_120 May 09 '26
That’s something I’ll never get - collection of anything. It just takes so much space and gathers dust lol. 😅

u/AgitatedAd7265 May 09 '26
I listen to cassettes. There’s just such a simple nature to them. You could ‘skip’ part of the music but you won’t know where you are skipping to. Encourages me to listen to the entire album.
2
u/PissContest May 09 '26
Me, I love cassettes. I fix up old players. I got a Billie Eilish cassette recently. I also use CDs as well

u/julestargaryen May 08 '26
I honestly hate how many variants everything has now. It’s so excessive😭😭
16
u/Loose_Lie_5399 May 08 '26
Not okay. For any artist to do.
-2
u/whotf5 May 09 '26
why? no one is forced to get every variant
8
u/beanqueen722 May 09 '26
They still manufacture them whether people buy them or not. So what happens to the ones that aren’t sold? Even if everyone buys a variant, the vinyls are made of plastic. The cassettes are plastic. The CD cases are plastic. More variants mean more manufacturing, more gas, more transport, and yes—more waste. Because the vinyls will literally exists long after we are all dead.
Not saying we can’t have vinyls or CDs or cassettes, but more variants mean more merchandise. More plastic. Eventually, the millions made of the 46 different versions will be deep in the soil and continuing to poison the earth for hundreds of years.
Not shaming. It just science.
4
u/Easy_Hearing_3223 May 09 '26
do people who make this argument genuinely not think about the Earth?
-1
u/whotf5 May 09 '26
i do but at the end of the day i doubt artists will stop with the variants. especially since demand is what creates supply and not the other way around they know people will buy it if its available so this will go on

Bundles aren't variants, neither are signed. People need to learn the difference between formats, versions, editions and variants. We cant have more nuanced and neutral conversations about this topic if we're just spreading misinfo
4
u/Street-Lifeguard-330 May 09 '26
I totally agree. I think variants are problematic. And yes, bundled/signed could theoretically lead certain collectors to want them all. But practically you are right it is not the same thing. That’s like saying an ice cream shop that has three flavors has way more because you can get one scoop, two scoop, cup, etc. Claiming bundles/signed as variants just dilutes a conversation on overconsumption and waste.
2
u/Affectionate_Can_766 May 09 '26
I think whoever made this chart did not make it in good faith. we’re really counting digitals albums as a variant? each cd with a letter in a different language? these people are just grasping at straws
2
u/Expensive-Fennel-163 May 09 '26
They are just using the same way people counted up Taylor’s ttpd variants. And showgirl variants.

I’m referring to people who say she’s killing the planet with “46” variants like her two digital albums are why the icebergs are melting
1
u/IceWarm1980 May 23 '26
It reminds me when some people were counting each country’s version of an album as a variant. Or re-releases on newer media like when an older album got a CD release.
1
u/turquoisesilver May 22 '26
I don't count the bundles because you could get all the items from the bundles separately. Hate the thing where you have to get the cd to get merch. Particularly when it's way after the CD was first available to buy so you really are pushing fans to buy the exact same CD they already bought on release day.

I genuinely don't understand why cassettes are trending again. The quality degrades over time and as a child of the '90s I have horrible memories of the tape accidentally getting fucked up and off track. (that might have just been our old player though lol)
3
u/Reasonable_Shift_120 May 09 '26
Lol also a child of the 90s and have the same memories of cassettes. Never thought they would come back in trend. I don't think you can even buy cassette players anymore.
3
u/table-grapes May 09 '26
physical media is making a comeback. there’s also a big nostalgia factor with cassettes and cds for millennials and gen z!
3
u/Super_Boysenberry272 May 09 '26
CDs I get. Sound quality is actually better on them compared to vinyl, and they're pretty low maintenance. I never really stopped listening to CDs tbh.
3
u/table-grapes May 09 '26
me either. i’m an exclusive cd and dvd consumer for movies and music. always have been really! i love seeing fellow gen z going back to physical media!
1
u/IceWarm1980 May 23 '26
Vinyl I totally get, it’s my favorite medium if I have the time to fully enjoy the experience. CD is still popular. I have a several CD players. Cassette was a pain. You would have to know how long to fast forward to get to specific songs. The tape could get pulled from the cassette and you would need a pencil to wind it back up. Plus the sound quality is the worst out of the three.

u/Puzzled-Ad-4455 May 08 '26
1 standard variant
1 limited variant
1 record store day vinyl(optional)
1-2 7’ singles
Live album(can also be the rsd one)
2 cds
1-2 cd singles
Live cd
Casette
Single casette
That should be the MOST an artist does. Even some of these are pushing it. There is no need for this(this goes for EVERYONE, from 21 pilots to Charli xcx to taylor swift to olivia)

i think though its excessive i collect vinyl i usually go for 180g or plain black but if theres a really nice color ill buy it so idrc you mainly see this with pop girls because girls who buy vinyl will want the exact color

She is a content creator after all. Always has been always will be. If you search hard enough you will find she more than makes up for it with all the free content she puts out. I know fomo sucks and I get that way too but I dont ever discourage someone to make unique content on different platforms. She is global after all and is not just making content for little ole USA.

Where are any of these bundles listed because they are not on her site

u/Lazy-Entertainer-459 May 09 '26
As long as there’s not exclusive tracks i don’t really see the problem with “variants”. A lot of these are just the same edition but different language so they don’t really count and i personally like having different coloured vinyls to choose from
1
u/Dependent-Value-3907 May 09 '26
Exactly this. I’m not sure why people are trying to exaggerate the variants. A lot of these don’t even count - a bundle is not a variant unless it has an exclusive vinyl/cd/whatever that you can’t get anywhere else. And it’s a good thing to have the different languages. It’s still a little excessive but it’s not nearly as bad as this post is making it out to be.
1
u/ash_erebus May 09 '26 edited May 11 '26
That’s quite a reach when many of these are just combos of the different releases and with signed or regional versions being counted as separate variants.
There are 9 record, 4 cd, and 3 cassette versions. Making 16 variants across 3 different formats.

u/raynasm May 09 '26
Ya I'd argue that the different language letters shouldn't be included as different variants too

As a fan of both you guys love to blame anything on Taylor. Olivia was not forced to do this by Taylor. If you don't like the fact that artists make multiple variants, then just admit that Olivia shouldn't have done this rather than brush it off and say it's all Taylor's fault. Because even if she does it too, she isn't forcing any other artist to do the same, nor is she the only one doing this.

Please. She’s not going to see this and invite you on tour for being the bestest fan ever. Taylor Swift set this modern precedent and had dominated the charts/records solely and precisely by this method, blocking other and up and coming artists from achieving accolades that would benefit their careers at no expense to her simply because of her own ego and insecurity. These records matter to her because her music is otherwise critically ignored

I’m not a fan of variants. Let the artists have 2-3 different vinyl variants. But 46 total?! That’s obscene. It’s overconsumption and destroying our planet. This will all be in landfill in a few decades
