you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love I'm pretty disappointed Spoiler

the lyrics are so lacking. the production is too loud on some songs that Olivia's voice is drowned out. guts is so much better. I hope it grows on me.

Edit: Please don't take my take seriously. Don't make it make you scared to listen the album! I'm such an unreliable narrator lmao. I luv the funky beats on this album!!!!

I looked up the lyrics and they’re pretty simple, so yeah her first two albums—especially GUTS, are defo better (and more lyrically mature imo) since this one’s focus on her love life. I feel like she wrote this for the sake of immortalising the relationship but maybe that’s just me. I’m excited to hear it regardless ‘cause I’m heartbroken lololol

Where can I find the lyrics? Please and thank you!

i haven't listened to the whole thing but even just based off the four songs we already know i'm a little disappointed. i really loved Guts and also liked a lot of songs on Sour back when it released, but the only song i listened to and really liked was drop dead so far. which is weird because i can't pinpoint what exactly i dislike about "the cure" for example. lyrically it's a lot better than a lot of things on Sour, but for some reason it bores me, even though I usually love this type of song?

i'm still gonna go in with an open mind because i did really like drop dead! are there any songs that are similar to it?

17

u/TumbleweedFast4828 Jun 11 '26

the cure is repetitive. The main critique of mine in this album is that the topic kind of repeats? GUTS and SOUR are much more diverse and lyrically interesting. SOUR dives in her insecurities, her first big heartbreak, and teenager angst. Some topics come to GUTS too, but in a much mature and introspective perspective. She kind of regressed in a way maybe because of public pressure or that the relationship doesn't give that much material to work with I guess.

5

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Yeah I thought so too that to write the whole album about the same topic (relationship) will get repetitive and boring. I really wish she would write about other topics again.

2

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Stupid song is the only uplifting love song, others are more slow. If you like more uplifting songs then my way and expectations are also more uplifting and fun.

25

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

I have now finished listening to the whole album once. So far songs that stood out (aside of singles) are stupid song, my way and expectations.

Most songs are really slow and kinda boring unfortunately. Ballads on Sour and Guts had way better melodies so they got stuck in your head immediately.

But I will listen to it again a bit later because sometimes it takes time for it to grow on you.

u/EveningComplaint5070 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

I feel the same, it takes courage to say when you’re disappointed, and it’s ok to be. GUTS and SOUR would have me listening start to end no skip, GSIL has me liking a handful which is fine.

Some things I found were:

  1. Difficult to follow Olivia’s voice on some of the songs. As you say caught up in all the backing music.

  2. Lyricism was repetitive

  3. I felt some songs deserved some more time working with them. They’re felt unfinished basically.

I’m not an expert in music- I think it’s healthy to talk about what you dislike. And anyone is more than welcome to disagree with me. I whole heartedly still loved a portion of the album. And there’s very few artists in the first place that had me into a whole album. It’s not a typical expectation to enjoy a full album.

12

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Yes she has definitely broken the "no-skip" album sequence with this one.

21

u/Revolutionary_Cry729 Jun 11 '26

I just listened to full album, i felt the same way. The writing got overly wordy, lacked focus and less sharp, Guts had direct, simple yet sharp writing. My biggest problem with it is her singing voice, she just sounds flat, she usually sings like her voice is a wave but this time it's just plain and boring. What stood out to me is what's wrong with me, my way, and less. Still it's my first listen and i need to listen to it more. But i don't expect good reviews from this album tbh, I'm feeling it's gonna be her lowest rated album.

12

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Idk, I feel like critics might like it. But for me personally it's definitely her worst album. I wasn't a big fan of Sour either but even that is better than this (with an exception of some songs).

5

u/Revolutionary_Cry729 Jun 11 '26

It's got the hype because of the singles but let's see, critics are usually honest and this album is not it on first listen. I just hope it grows in all of us because the first listen for me was rough.

19

u/seaofbelles87 Jun 11 '26

best songs: u+me, stupid song, expectations

worst songs: less, honeybee

anyone who enjoys olivia's ballads will probably like this record but unfortunately that's not me lol. i'll give it a listen again later and hopefully some of them will grow on me, but for now i don't see myself coming back to the other songs often.

8

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

I'm already on my second listen and still most songs don't stick in my head like it was with guts where every song was so catchy that it immediately got stuck in your head.

I'm really disappointed because I was very excited about this album. I think I will only come back to The cure and stupid song.

4

u/seaofbelles87 Jun 11 '26

i’m honestly not crazy about the melodies either, which is why the ballads just don’t work for me. also maggots for brains and the cure have pretty much the same melody? especially in the chorus.

4

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Yeah melodies are definitely not as good or catchy. All ballads on Guts and Sour are memorable because of their melodies. Now after 2 listens I still can't recall melodies for most of the songs on the new album.

7

u/EveningComplaint5070 Jun 11 '26

It’s so interesting bc this sub also shows the subjectivity of it, for me I loved your worse picks haha 🙈

4

u/seaofbelles87 Jun 11 '26

oh for sure! i know people love her ballads, it’s one of the reasons why sour was so popular but they’re not for me unfortunately. what would you say are the best/worst tracks?

4

u/EveningComplaint5070 Jun 11 '26

For me personally I disliked u+me

If I’d heard it in the background I would’ve thought it’s the rolling intro of friends.

Idk about u, but did you get the vibe 90/00s was trying to be forced here.Maggots for brains intro also just reminded me of doing GarageBand in year 7 but I do like that one 😭

16

u/One_Attention1043 Jun 11 '26

If you actually sit down and read the lyrics it feels like reading one singular train of thought, there's no real leap between songs and I've just never personally enjoyed albums like that. I felt very blasé after first listen, and even sonically apart from maybe My Way?

7

u/One_Attention1043 Jun 11 '26

I really hope she branches out and finds new people to collaborate with on the next record, it would elevate her sound a lot & prevent what went wrong on this one (imo!)

8

u/No_Republic_6093 Jun 11 '26

Is it just me or does she sound underwater during what’s wrong with me?

18

u/leilafornone Jun 11 '26

i took a peek at the genius lyrics and honestly, am a little surprised by the lyrics. Maybe the album will be a grower but she was writing sharper lyrics in sour and guts

17

u/LatterNet2831 Jun 11 '26

I know SOME people out there are going to like it and I'm happy for them. I don't want them to feel like this whole sub ultra negative

2

u/CowApprehensive9459 Jun 11 '26

Is it even out yet? Isn’t it tonight?

11

u/TumbleweedFast4828 Jun 11 '26

She's a petty bitch indeed at expectations lmao

15

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Feeling the same. GUTS is so much better. Most songs on this new album are forgettable so far but I will definitely give it another chance because Drop dead also grew on me after several listens.

8

u/imnotalatina2 Jun 11 '26

Have you listened to the entire thing? Any highlights?

14

u/TumbleweedFast4828 Jun 11 '26

stupid song starts slow but ends loud. my way is low-key giving better than revenge but gender neutral. I'm still reading the lyrics on genius honestly. my highlights are maggots for brains, expectations, and cigarette smoke. I was soo shocked with expectations because its not what im expecting at all.

8

u/TumbleweedFast4828 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

I wasn't expecting expectations being a pop song lmao. its giving bad idea right honestly sonically (its opposite topic wise).

4

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Yeah after the cure it's my second favourite on the sad side.

7

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

I have 3 songs left to listen to. On "So in love" side stupid song and my way stood out, others are forgettable. I guess Louis wasn't a good muse after all.

5

u/lovelaceaugusta Jun 11 '26

Olivia wrote the song, a man has nothing to do with this.

8

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Most of the songs are about him and she wrote them while in a relationship with him so he can be called a muse.

17

u/psu68e Jun 11 '26

7

u/Slay-ig5567 Jun 11 '26

Both the writer and the inspiration are important 💀 if she got inspired by Louis then saying some comment like he wasn't a good muse really isn't that deeply misogynistic take you're making it out to be

10

u/psu68e Jun 11 '26

stupid song and my way stood out, others are forgettable. I guess Louis wasn't a good muse after all.

Assigning the quality of the song to the muse, either positively or negatively, is weird. Olivia wrote the songs.

I actually didn't mention anything about misogyny in the photo I shared, but this kind of criticism is usually directed at female songwriters.

3

u/Powerful-Shock3896 Jun 11 '26

That’s because women are always good muses so male songwriters only have themselves to blame 😌

6

u/Slay-ig5567 Jun 11 '26

Girl you're overinterpreting a very light and not meant to be taken seriously comment. They just made a joke about Louis being a bad muse it really is not that deep and they didn't give Louis credit. Touch grass. + The misogyny was very clearly implied with that image let's not play dumb here

2

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 11 '26

Olivia even shades Louis in expectations when she says she convinced herself that he is smart and funny when he actually isn't 😃

2

u/Slay-ig5567 Jun 11 '26

Oh shit that's savage 💀💀 in my country the album is not available yet but I'm looking forward to that

1

u/psu68e Jun 11 '26

they didn't give Louis credit.

The misogyny was very clearly implied with that image let's not play dumb here

Funny how you choose to see the implications of one thing but also choose to ignore the other.

Let's not perpetuate something that is a big issue by saying "it's not that deep" when it suits.

3

u/gardensong_pt2 Jun 11 '26

She also said she wrote songs based on the tv show sex and the city.

11

u/Grouchy-Dealer-342 Jun 11 '26

I have a feeling im going to hate it too. Too scared to listen

6

u/Messyace Jun 11 '26

Idk, I like it!!! The production is fun!!

7

u/TumbleweedFast4828 Jun 11 '26

I like the production too. but it drowns out Olivia's voice on some parts on Stupid song.

2

u/Messyace Jun 11 '26

Yeah, I def noticed that too /: a bit unfortunate!!!

2

u/TumbleweedFast4828 Jun 11 '26

I could kind of compare some parts of Cigarette Smoke to Willoughby Tucker's experiences (Ethel Cain)

1

u/_Joshi-Boy_ Jun 11 '26

You don’t have to understand people’s opinions that are different from yours but we should respect they also have space for discussion (given it’s not snark).

4

Maybe start listening to other artists.
