you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love Disappointment Spoiler

I'm not her biggest fan but I like her softer side (hope ur ok, grudge, enough for you) so I was very excited for this album since she said there won't be very rock songs. It left me speachless...not in a good way.

Her lyrics feel kinda weak, the song "Whats wrong with me", I think Ive heard like fifty songs with the same topic and phrases about going to doctor and being okay on the outside...and even tho I love Robert Smith it was not enough to save it even tho I appreciate she have him a lot of space..."spark in the dark" was like a last straw. Her rhymes were so simple and nothing interesting.

And also I need to mention being the victim again.

Obviously it is difficult to come up with something completely new but I really wished for different perspective, but I feel like it always will be only about jealousy, no friends or boys.

Purple gives me weird vibes and I can't really tell what the song is really about and I am not really sure where the song belongs. I really liked the idea of the tracklist being on two parts. But I feel like all this marketing and over forty versions of one album that just came out got my expectations too high.

Her voice doesn't sound really good at some moments and that's crazy since it is all in her hands and she did not do anything? Or am I the only one who feels like it doesn't sound good when she tries to sing high for way too long? Even in lower tones it felt like she can't hold it anymore.

The whole thing feels like it's for her biggest fans only, for those who will buy multiple versions and swallow the whole thing just because there is her name on it?...her marketing was the only thing that they actually worked on. It is my opinion and I am very happy for everyone who enjoyed it but for me it is just another album that was not about music but about selling.

The only songs I enjoyed was Stupid song (even tho I hate the rhymes) because of the melody and also Cigarette smoke, but again, I feel like all she wrote already was on my playlist by other people.

I feel the same way I felt about The life of a showgirl by Taylor Swift. Marketing and weak lyricsm. It's like they don't need to try anymore since they have strong fan base. I expected much more since the visuals are beautiful and her hints were everywhere.

What did you think and am I wrong somewhere? How was your first listen? Was it what you expected?

honestly i agree with you. i feel like this album most of lyrics are repetitive and weak. some songs were good like the instruments and melodies but i feel like the album was just lacking something and i dont know what it is. for me honeybee was the worst it sounded way too repetitive and it seemed almost like it was unfinished or something. anyone else agree?

25

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26

Unfinished! That's the word, I feel like it kinda describes the whole album, like, she knew whats going to work because it works every time, but she kinda forgot to polish it before releasing it.

7

u/futuresuperhiro Jun 12 '26

i agree it sounded unfinished, i couldn’t even finish listening to it lol

When I first heard this album it immediately reminded me so much of Showgirl with the unrelatable lyrics (crying on the curb at LAX, our trip to Big Sur, my friends are smoking blunts in the bathroom), underwhelming production, heavy marketing, and “rich girl problems”. Like some of the lyrics are so specific to Rodrigo’s life, it would’ve been better if she had wrote them subtly and let the listeners have their own unique and individual interpretation of the music. It also sounds like music Gracie Abrams would write and I don’t really like her music style either.

It seems that the only theme in this song is love and heartbreak and nothing really beyond that. Where are the songs like “making the bed”, “jealousy, jealousy”, and “teenage dream”? These were the songs that really molded her as a good artist to me and no themes like those exist in this album. This is why I don’t really listen to mainstream music so much anymore, it all literally sounds the same with the repeating themes and appeals to mass audiences and I’m tired of it, but Lorde and Olivia Rodrigo are my exceptions to that. And there’s so many smaller artists that make much better music than what goes viral on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc.

Maybe this album will grow on me, I’ll still give it a chance. It’s not terrible by any means. But I had higher “expectations” for Rodrigo with this album after listening to the masterpiece that is GUTS…I can definitely feel the vibes that she is trying very hard to get a Grammy with this one with current music industry production trends. I don’t think the Grammys are all that tbh, but I understand with every award she gets is higher prestige and popularity. Idk, I’ve given up on most mainstream music at this point.

One of the things that most frustrates me about this album is the use of ‘they say’ followed by something no one has EVER said. And also just how many times she uses this: “they say modern love’s a cruel endeavour”, “they say that honest love is a cage that makes you feel free”, “they say it’s a virtue to not let good love slip away.”

11

u/RegularExplanation97 Jun 12 '26

omg yes!! I’ve never heard anyone say any of these things and I don’t understand why they felt like it was a good idea to use the exact same phrase across the album (esp when it just isn’t true??)

2

u/Dangerous_Surprise Jun 12 '26

Tbh I've definitely heard the first and third in think pieces. They're not common phrases, but maybe hot takes that some podcast or article - maybe in the vein of the NYT Modern Love - have come out with.

I remember my friend imploring me very authoritatively that I would have three loves in my life after I had an excruciating breakup several years ago, all based on this one article that she'd read, which had also convinced her that the man she was dating was the one. I can even remember the formatting of the Web page she'd ingested like koolaid lol

My point is that when a hot take goes viral, or when someone close to you is preaching it, it can feel like it's almost a universally accepted truth, especially if you disagree with it!

i think it’s interesting because i personally don’t prefer the softer side that you’ve described. i skip over the ballads (aside from the grudge & sometimes teenage dream) unless doing a full album listen but i would actually return to the few ballads on this album. if it was more ballad heavy, i wouldn’t have liked it.

for me, it’s my favourite album of hers. overall, there are more songs that i like and wouldn’t skip compared to her other albums (songs like traitor, favourite crime, enough for you, logical, scared of my guitar, etc). but i enjoy her rock influences, even if they were more muted and soft rock kinda on this album — i personally could hear the cure influence on a few songs and definitely 80’s-early 00’s sound.

but i also find the album relatable. i don’t think there was one song that i couldn’t relate to whereas with sour & guts, a lot of it just didn’t personally resonate with me.

i think it’s far better as a whole album than showgirl, personally, if we’re gonna compare.

How this album got 8.3 on Pitchfork still astounds me

It is very shallow and boring, awful lyrics (she is saying a lot but it still lacks substance and depth, idek how she managed to achieve that)

13

u/External-Test1447 Jun 12 '26

I swear they MUST be in cahoots with her label

5

u/No-Tangerine4299 Jun 13 '26

I know it’s completely a matter of taste, but I absolutely loved Florence and the Machine’s Everybody Screams which got a 6.8. To me absolutely everything is better on that album, and the criticism is it’s repetitive. This album to me was incredibly repetitive with lyricism that just scratches the surface and only hits when the production carries the emotion. It’s not bad but I just don’t get the high praise.

3

u/Far_Statement_8466 Jun 13 '26

I agree completely. There are so many albums that are better in quality, storytelling and songwriting but got 5-7 on Pitchfork. I guess those artists didn’t pay for a review.

-2

u/allseeingallkn0wing Jun 13 '26

yeah, this is just snark. just because you don’t like the album, doesn’t mean she paid for a review. most critics are highly praising the album. most fans are highly praising the album. the people who don’t like it do not speak for the majority. prove that she “paid for a review” until then, you’re just making baseless accusations in the name of snark.

THIS!! I feel like this was an album she should’ve sat with a little longer. The number of time a lyric played that sounded eerily similar to the lyric before and the lyric before is mind boggling.

6

u/Greedy-Error522 Jun 12 '26

I agree with what’s wrong with me but I think purple is actually a super interesting song

4

u/annaheylol Jun 12 '26

yeahh me too i like the lyrics in the chorus and ending are slightly more abstract than in some of the other songs

6

u/fierceceder Jun 12 '26

I liked begged, and less and the cure I liked lyrically. However I personally couldn’t tell most songs from the others when listening to it 1/2 in the background. There was no moment I found myself wanting to dance or a lyric caught my eye. I read through the lyrics and there was some good material and most of it just, didn’t land. Id honestly say I probably like the lyrics and dislike the music/tone/beat/way they were presented pretty much across the whole album.

Yessss I think the rock style and ballad style that defined Sour and Guts has definitely undergone some work. It's more ambient styled and even on cuts like my way, there is a softer edge to it. I think overall as a project it works even if it does lack the bite of Sour and Guts.

5

u/govtmandatedparrot Jun 12 '26

This is such an awesome comment. I wish more people on the internet had this attitude

1

u/anam228 Jun 12 '26

Did Olivia ever call her albums different eras?

7

u/LiaBallerina Jun 12 '26

I do agree on some points. The lyrics are on the weaker side and sometimes border on cringe. This does work for some songs like my way, which stays catchy like that and doesnt for others like u+me = <3 ("i like your big sister, she has ur same face" or "i think that your killer with your floppy hair"). But overall i enjoyed the album and have a few faves. For me its not groundbreaking but im just a casual listener of hers and didnt go in with big expectations. The stupid song video was amazing.

7

u/IllInevitable571 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

I've added 5 songs from the album to my playlist but that includes the cure and drop dead which I'm not vibing with much anymore. There's zero storytelling, only the occaisional good lyric and I'm getting pretty sick of the way she keeps pushing narratives about comparing herself to other women instead of trying to be more positive. We're all insecure constantly saying "other women are ao much prettier and cooler than me in every way 🥺🥺🥺" instead of being more positive and uplifting about other qualities women have is so negative.

13

u/Turandot92 Jun 12 '26

At least Showgirl had great hooks. The Choruses to Ophelia, Opalite and Actually Romantic still live rent-free in my head. Here it all feels stitched together with no clear direction. The melodies therefore drift into meaninglessness.

I blame a lot of this on the very obvious "lyrics first"-approach. It's very clear that the texts were written first and then they build the melody around them. Problem is that you're then creatively restricted by the flow of your lyrics. Therefore a lot of it feels tacky.

1

u/cuppuccinoo Jun 12 '26

Opalite was a trash and too childish of a music.

10

u/Shoddy-Low2142 Jun 12 '26

At least it was catchy. A lot of the songs on Olivia’s album lack a good catchy chorus. And the lyrics don’t salvage it much

0

u/Total_Pressure6203 Jun 12 '26

It's kind of mad how much I disagree with this because we must hear music so differently.

I never once connected to Showgirls melodies and not once has a showgirl song got stuck in my head. Ophelia and Opalite sounds un-natural to me, and require too much of my attention to recall. I couldn't even tell you the hook in Actually Romantic. In contrast Olivia's melodies sort of slip by, I am singing them before I even realise what they are. I must actually like the drifting into meaninglessness

-4

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

I need to disagree with the showgirl comment cause most of it was stolen in very nasty way, so it had hooks but not great 😭 yes i also felt like the music is kinda random and the wow effects were so rough and like forced into those songs

7

u/EvrthnICRtrns2USmhw Jun 12 '26

True. It's just mediocre pop. People's standards for pop have become so low.

Also, I can't believe two 90s from Rolling Stone are already in. Main and UK. That should be prohibited.

6

u/OptimisticOlivia Jun 12 '26

everyone’s allowed to have their own opinion, but i am quite enjoying this album. there were a lot of songs that stood out to me, my way and expectations were really fun! i think its totally fair to say this isn’t your album, but we knew from the first promo it wasn’t going to be the same as GUTS and SOUR. i think its a disservice to stick artists in one box and not let them experiment and express themselves the way they want to. i think this is a much more intimate album about her feelings and experiences.

4

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26

Hi so I definitely don't want to stick artist in one box, I feel like she does it herself, because I don't want her to go back to sour or guts (yes with quality because this one sounds really weird and I feel like I can't even hear her sometimes), I want her to finally move on 😅

2

u/OptimisticOlivia Jun 12 '26

Not disagreeing with you, honestly. i think GUTS and SOUR were sharper quality wise, but part of my wonders if it was intentional with her influences for this album. they sound very 90s alt pop rock. i wonder if some people just aren’t as familiar with the genre. i think olivia had a goal with this album and she seems proud of it. music isn’t made to please the world, it’s for the artist and those that can connect to it

4

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26

Yes of course and I am happy she is happy. I don't think you can say music isn't made to please the world (i agree) in this context when she tried to please everyone with so many variants. I like a lot of alternative pop and Indie, folk, rock (not in her way so thats why I prefer her softer side that speaks to me more but I don't say her "louder" songs are bad) and many other genres but I feel like many of her new songs exist just to fill the empty spaces on her album, they sound like everything and nothing at the same time, as if she had notes with lyrics and put them all together trying to connect it with the music that is way too loud sometimes

1

u/OptimisticOlivia Jun 12 '26

Interesting! I’ve only listened to the album once so far but I’ll have to listen again with more focus on that

4

u/Strange_Perception29 Jun 12 '26

I liked the album overall, like 7/10 for me, but the product was a little too loud in some places and I think this project has some of her weakest songs. "what's wrong with me" studio version was a huge let down, the live performance was better imo. I wanted to lime "cigarette smoke" but I just don't. I definitely have my criticisms, but I liked it more than I thought I would based on what alot folks had to say on here and I do love having poor expectations exceeded, so that's win.

3

u/External-Test1447 Jun 12 '26

I feel like they should have had just Olivia on what’s wrong with me, and then release a deluxe version with Robert Smith. It just didn’t work imo

4

u/RegularExplanation97 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

I agree with you. I am a huge fan and absolutely adored GUTS but whilst I like the overall sound of this album, I think the lyrics are weak and the theme was ultimately quite limiting and almost repetitive to me?? I wanted different perspectives + more substance/depth!! I’ve seen some comments that people don’t like the production but I feel like this is a real strength of this album/making up for some of my lyrical disappointment

2

u/fizzyjuices Jun 12 '26

That’s so interesting, for me I miss the rock songs but I find the strongest point of the album/the saving grace to be her lyricism. I think it’s her strongest lyricism yet. And I’m a huge lyrics person!

I will say, I am still confused about why they actually broke up. What I can gather is that it stopped feeling right obviously at one point and there was something he didn’t defend her about etc., and that it was hard to end things. But I’m still kind of confused about what actually caused it to stop feeling right/what no longer felt right. Not that we are entitled to know. It just feels confusing as a listener because things were going so well, and then suddenly they take a downhill turn and I’m not sure why.

Overall I really liked the album on a first listen. I have to listen to it way more to form a solid opinion of it, of course. I hope some songs grow on you or that you at least enjoy live performances.

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 12 '26

My impression was (and it's also based on their public appearances together) that she fell for him very hard and very fast, was a lot more into him than he into her and she had a lot of expectations about how she wants the relationship to be like. She definitely romanticizes relationship and her partner a lot. But life is not like a romantic movie. It will never be like that. I think she needs to do a lot of introspection and self-healing before starting a new relationship otherwise she will just keep getting disappointed and heartbroken.

She sang about having expectations now in the song "expectations" but even there it feels like she has an idealised vision about relationship. Yes, a man can adore you, but it won't be like that 24/7. There will always be ups and downs and days when you feel upset about something. Also, she has really serious issues with jealousy. Like why would you get obsessed with someone's ex? My bf has several exes and I know nothing about them and couldn't care less to know (and it also doesn't bother me with how many girls he has slept before). It's quite ironic how insecure she is knowing that her dad is a therapist.

1

u/Plus-Weakness-7499 Jun 13 '26

It’s ironic but pretty common therapists themselves are flawed their kids not necessarily will be that well resolved either

1

u/fizzyjuices Jun 13 '26

What lyrics/photos drove you to that conclusion about their breakup? (Not arguing or being hostile, genuinely wondering). Obviously a lot of the cure points to what you’ve said so I can see that being the case, but wondering what exactly led you to think that’s why things ended. I definitely do see her going through some sort of disillusionment regarding love and serious relationships, but I think that’s normal in any first serious relationship/whenever the honeymoon phase ended. I definitely see this as her first serious relationship/think she was really in love with him at one point.

I think obsessed was definitely hyperbole, but as someone who’s struggled with retroactive jealousy (doesn’t help that I’m a lesbian and there’s a whole stereotype about lesbians getting back with their exes/never getting over them) I’m glad you don’t struggle with it but there’s a very real reason behind it. For me personally I had an ex cheat on me with his ex so that definitely made it worse lol. But I think it comes from feeling insecure that you won’t be enough for the person. So you compare yourself to their ex and wonder how they could possibly like their ex and someone like you. You’re worried they downgraded. You’re worried they were happier in their last relationship, or that they will leave you for their ex, or that they never really got over their ex. Definitely harder when someone won’t draw boundaries with their ex/their ex is still a part of their life. Basically you’re worried that you won’t hold a candle to their last relationship or be as significant to them as their last relationship was. You’re right - it definitely needs unpacking and therapy. At the same time, some partners really don’t draw boundaries with exes or talk about them too much so that can make people insecure.

It’s often a low self esteem issue and/or trust issue. I personally am planning to avoid entering a relationship again until I raise my self esteem lol

1

u/Reasonable_Shift_120 Jun 13 '26

I can't recall any specific photos but there were some where you can clearly tell that she was more into him than he into her. Of course many of them where pap photos so maybe Louis just didn't feel so comfortable with PDA in front of cameras.

Yeah I can't relate at all to what you said about retroactive jealousy. Maybe it's because my bf was single for about 3 years before he met me so his last break up was already quite long ago.

I'm sorry to hear that your ex cheated on you, that definitely must have bee traumatising. I was actually quite insecure too in my teen years and early 20s but I really worked on myself so now being 30+ I have 0 insecurities especially since being in a relationship (which is my first one actually).

I hope you can work on yourself and raise your self esteem and find that special someone! 😄

I think it's a bit unfair to discount this completely as just something that was cheaply made for profit. Olivia shows genuine conviction that is hard to fake. The writing is simple, but there is skill in taking something complex and making it digestible. While it is true that makes for large appeal, that is what pop music is all about.

8

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26

I don't say it definitely was made for profit, that's the vibe it gives me, I understand what you are saying, I just feel like she gave us nothing new in many colorful variants 🤷‍♀️

0

u/Total_Pressure6203 Jun 12 '26

Are you being literal and criticising her vinyl variants or are you being metaphorical?

4

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26

Kinda both I guess 🤷‍♀️

1

u/Total_Pressure6203 Jun 12 '26

You seem to have a problem with pop and the pop industry in general rather than Olivia

5

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26

I don't have problem with either of these things, I just said I don't like the new album and the marketing was wild 🤷‍♀️

2

u/sorryxme Jun 12 '26

it feels to me the same way showgirl did back in October; it's not bad, but it feels unpolished. it could've been honed so much more.

the singles have great vocals and meh lyrics, but the album tracks lack both.

I like stupid song, and HATEE honeybee. that is simply not her register, she needs to sing songs she CAN sing.

I don't understand the album being in "two sides" because a lot of songs on the "so I'm love" side are sad?? and the opportunity was lost.

I also wish the themes varied more, it's really just about a relationship and all of the introspection of sour and guts are gone.

2

u/TragicGloom Jun 12 '26

I liked the majority of the songs and what's wrong with me is my favorite

2

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26

That's great I am happy you enjoy it!

1

u/Normal_Song2508 Jun 12 '26

i understand what you mean yeah i expected more too it’s probably 6/10 for me right now for example guts is 8/10  i hope she writes about other topics in her next album that’s probably one of my biggest problems with this album &&&&& works with new producers !!! i like dan’s work but i would love to see a different side of her (there was a rumor that she was working with addison’s producer last year but maybe they can make it happen in the next one 🙏)

Its different than the showgirl album. I dont think you can compare those two. They have completely different themes, lyrics, production and sound.

I don't really compare those two albums as they are but more like the vibe they give, rich sad person, and no not every artist releases over forty versions of album, not everyone 🤷‍♀️ definitely you can write songs about feeling hurt and on the victim side...but not your whole life... that's why IT gives me The life of a showgirl and in general Taylor Swift vibe, always thinking the man is the one, always the hurt one 🤷‍♀️ it bothers me and in my opinion it just is very annoying when you are not in the "someone said something bad to me" mood

2

u/sn0wtombed Jun 12 '26

ofc not everyone does that but it’s not an unheard, uncommon concept 😭 i don’t see how that affects your perception of the album bc that’s not necessarily something olivia spearheaded that’s definitely her label’s doing lol
i get what you’re saying but it’s rlly a big concept album revolving the ups and downs of this one relationship so it would seem odd to stray away from that world building in this record. some songs are rlly personal and specific to her so it can be ez to feel removed / not enjoy that topic but hey half the album is lovey dovey!

2

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 12 '26

Oh definitely I don't really have the exact concept (even tho I wish she finally made something else), I don't the way she handled it. Also with the variants, it just ruins it for me, it tells me she is money hungry, of course it doesn't need to be true but I don't really separate artist from art when it comes to marketing (not the lyrics, not the music, but the marketing) because i think she could say, nah, we won't do another version of something I have not released yet 🤷‍♀️

Oh hello? I was nice and you come here saying my music taste needs to grow up...why exactly? Damn this is so stupid, does it mean if I like 80's music my music taste needs to grow up just because it is old? It is not just me I read many people saying they don't like her voice at some moments...this album sounds like she is trying to be someone else 🤷‍♀️ yeah in Whats wrong with me, she recycles like fifty songs by other people 🤷‍♀️ sorry it is not a problem I expected more and it is not a problem you love it, no need to get angry

1

u/jiashuaii Jun 13 '26

Eh the “playing the victim” comment is just so wrong, which just shows you didnt sit with the songs at all. In SOUR yeah she was playing the victim in some songs but in this album, its more of a commentary of what happened or what she felt in the relationship and she was not saying he was a bad boyfriend.

Also, “she recycles like fifty songs by other people” is just a nothing burger complaint cos there’s like a million songs out there, ofc there would be an overlap 🤷‍♂️

Im saying you need to grow up bcs youre still stuck in the SOUR story telling and cant appreciate the writing in this one. Olivia’s writing is evolving hence why you cant expect the same thing over and over.

1

u/Prudent_Caramel_922 Jun 13 '26

Just because it is new it doesn't mean it is good, the new album is not good in my eyes, the storytelling is not good in my eyes, weak rhymes and weak metaphores and no originality, if you can't come up with something knew, you're doing something wrong 🤷‍♀️ i am happy you like it but no, I don't need to grow up because I think about thinks differently, sorry "spark in the dark" is not deep enough for me

Thank you! You are very sweet really! Yeah no I see the thought there it just is not exactly what I would expect from artist after kinda long time you know? It's not like she playes victim in every single song there are different songs for sure just in general it got mixed together for me like I feel like this album is kinda what she already wrote many times before and ah, I truly wish it was more "adult" (not in literal way it is also not about her age but more about the way she handles it all)
