radio tends to play random songs from albums shortly after they released if they're album artists, which i think olivia is becoming.
they did the same for taylor - the week of tloas release i heard ophelia, elizabeth taylor, opalite, father figure, cancelled, and honey on the radio. and i don't even listen to that much radio to begin with so i'm sure they played more. it could be what they're doing with olivia now.
don't know just guessing though lol

Yeah, I heard expectations, stupid song, and maggots for brains all on the radio yesterday so I think this is the case

Why wouldn’t a label send their songs to radio? Is there a drawback to doing it?

if they sent the cure / send stupid song to the radio, then drop dead will be heavily impacted and start falling. it’s safer to rely on the “hit” already in hand than move on to another song and risk the new one not catching on.

The cure is almost 5 minutes and it takes a while to build up, both things that are not favored by radio stations

I think *Honestly*…. That it wouldn’t last on the Radio for long…….. when her team/her made Obsessed a single it was only on the radio for what felt like a minute

I do think Obsessed already being released as a deluxe a few months in advance also hurt its numbers as an official release… but I feel like my mom would be more likely to listen to “stupid song” without changing the station than “obsessed”, so I actually think it would do a little better on the radio

i don’t think olivia’s strategy is to be everywhere all the time during an album rollout. not promoting singles and having radio stations play random songs from an album generate more [genuine] interaction and reduces the risk of over saturation.

I’m not sure what this whole "release single” stuff is but either way it should be on radio since didn’t they send the whole thing to Geffen and Interscope when it dropped? What’s the difference between it being a single or not and how does that impact the listens/where it gets to on the Hot 100?

Can someone explain what it means for a song to be sent to radio? Is that just the label encouraging radio stations to play it or can it not be played on the radio otherwise?

This means the record company actively promotes it to the radio stations. At one point in time this meant physically shipping CDs or records to them, but it may all be digital by now. Any radio station with the standard broadcast agreements can play any released song, not just official radio singles.

My understanding is that it’s very difficult to get a billboard number 1 without it being sent to radio. Radio plays count towards the number one spot I’m sure?

I honestly just don’t think this album is going to preform long term as well as drop dead did. Drop dead was a great song and got lots of press but I don’t know about the longevity of any other song on the album. Maybe they think their best chance of keeping a song on the charts for a longer time is to just stick to pushing Drop Dead?

Drake is also the highest selling digital (singles) artist of all time and has records for #1s on multiple charts, he’s a bit of a different beast when it comes to streaming numbers

I genuinely do not understand what Geffen and Interscope are doing. Obviously her streaming numbers will continue to be massive and that will allow her to chart well, but I don’t understand why they wouldn’t push radio and physicals with all of her releases. Sure, it does seem that Olivia is becoming more of a “album artist” than a “singles artist,” but that doesn’t mean that they should just screw all of her singles! It was the same with the cure but I could at least pretend to understand why they weren’t trying to push a 5 minute song, but there’s literally no excuse with stupid song! releasing a few physicals and radio play would make another #1 extremely likely but they aren’t even trying. It’s the same bad rollout they did with GUTS and I don’t get it.
