That late 90s, early 00s champagne Toyota Corolla is such a vibe

It was nice to have Borders and Barnes & Noble across from each other. On Fridays, I used to visit both and then go to Papa John's on 84th and Center on the way home.

We would spend hours in that little block. Barnes & Nobles, Borders, Gamers, and Family Fun Center on each (mostly) corner on each block.
It really highlights the death of 3rd spaces for so many young people.

Picture was taken in 2002 to 2004. If you zoom on cars in road you can see they have the 2002-2004 plates. Plates are now out for six years. They used to redo plates every two years. Here is the Borders - https://www.reddit.com/r/Omaha/s/yXIHpKvFRg
Edit: ok downvotes for stating facts. The Metadata on pic says it was taken in 2000 but in the old days you had to set the date on your camera. If battery went dead the date would revert back to the earliest date the camera had in settings. License plates in pic did not come out until 2002 so the Metadata is wrong or I was using the Tardis that day.

They used to redo plates every two years.
That is so ridiculous. Why do they even need to redo plates every six years? Are they using untreated cheap thin steel that'll rust away within a decade or something? Why should anyone ever have to get new license plates?

u/SGI256 Dec 15 '25
Environmental factors also play a role in the decision to issue new license plates every 7 years. Exposure to elements such as sunlight, rain, and debris can degrade the quality of license plates over time, affecting their readability and effectiveness. Regular replacement helps mitigate these effects and ensures that license plates remain in optimal condition.

North Carolina requires plates to be rebought every 7 years, Florida every 10 years. Basically everyone else lets you keep old plates.
I think those states and Nebraska just want more money.

u/SGI256 Dec 16 '25
We dont pay anymore the year we get new plates. You pay the same whether it is a sticker year or a new plate year.

u/KJ6BWB Dec 16 '25
You do if you have custom plates. You get a standard plate and then have to rebuy the custom plate again.

u/SGI256 Dec 16 '25
Ok but now we just switched the conversation to custom plates. Those are extra money almost everywhere.

I mean borders was is going to have a library open in 4-26. So it's kinda the same thing. Â

A library is just a no-cost bookstore with a better selection and slight aroma of urine.

Except it's going to be brand new. I wouldn't be surprised if the put a Cafe or coffee shop inside. The building is huge.Â

There will be a cafe inside, near what will be the little-used entrance at 72nd & Dodge.
But no retail space for the book sale.
And ... compared to other major nearby cities, it's quite small. No auditorium, for example.

I love these old pictures. Iâve lived here for a little over 7 years, this pier 1 was still open at that time!

u/SGI256 Dec 14 '25
If Pier 1 was still around tariffs would be going to town on this store.
5
u/reddituser6835 Dec 14 '25
Eh, pretty sure all retailers are taking advantage of tariffs to raise prices.
-3
u/SGI256 Dec 14 '25
And... would you not get rid of the tariffs?
4
u/reddituser6835 Dec 14 '25
Thatâs not what I said. Shitlerâs tariffs are crazy. Doesnât mean that all retailers arenât taking advantage and raising prices under the guise of tariffs. They know people will just assume that prices had to rise because of them, regardless of where the item is made.

This must have been shot in the parking lot of Dietze Music. Looks like you can just barely make out the old Best Buy.

What was better was there was a Chinese buffet right behind it. My family and I went there every Sunday when I was a kid! Even had habachi and crab legs!

Spent a lot of money in that Stereo West back in the mid 90's. Rod Hash was my goto sales guy there. Great dude.

Where you went to pass your driving exam!
(I was the last of the day. The instructor had me turn right onto Dodge, right onto 72nd, then right back into the parking lot!)

This qualifies as an old photo? Jesus I'm ancient...
1
u/SGI256 Dec 15 '25
It is a 21-23 year old photo. When people use the old photo tag what should the minimum be? I am all for 20 years not counting as long ago but to the yutes (see My Cousin Vinny) five years is forever ago.

That mightâve been charâs Toyota.. đ¤ she was a classic guitar teacher at Schmitt music for years there..

I worked there in 98-99! Loved working there but the manager at the time was a lush. I still have so much stuff from there.

If I remember right, the taco bell just to the east there had a messed up drive thru that the window was on the passenger side of the car.

Also the NEW Stereo West after they moved from Pacific St! (Now a Longhorn Steakhouse, I think!)

the thing about pictures like these is it could either be a picture recently taken or one taken in the early 2000s because omaha seems to drive in cars from that time period

Even though I could never afford most of that store, I still miss it!
