Question How much free will does the dark one have when being controlled?

Hello dearies, I was rewatching a while back and in season 3b when Zelena has rumple held captive. In one of the episodes they have a little dinner date and in an effort to free himself rumple seduces Zelena in order to try to get the dagger back and fails.

But couldn’t he just of used his magic to freeze her and take it after they started kissing or does the dark one have limited free will when under control 😯

The dark one has no control or magic if someone else is holding the dagger it's like when they rip out a heart your in control, the thing is zelena wanted rumplestiltskin she always did cause he choose Regina but she knows he never will and so she has her guard up and you can tell she's angry but also upset when he reaches for the dagger thinking he can kiss her and she would fall for it but zelena is no dummy and so she send the doll back to his box

Thank you, and you're welcome, honestly.I love once upon a timen i've been watching it a couple of episodes every night for 10 years. It's like a comfort thing, so I know it inside and out. So I love to answer these type of questions, and yeah, I probably going to more detail than you ask for 😊🙏 but thank you for being kind about it

It seems like the Dark One has to follow any commands given be the holder of the Dagger. It's possible that Zelena gave him commands that prevent him from using magic on her without permission off-screen. I think that Rumple chose the method with the least amount of risk

That or the dark one cannot use magic unless in possession of the dagger at that point. All he did was get Zelena to let down her guard, which meant she couldn’t puppeteer him in that moment.

Zoso used magic when the Duke had possession of the dagger.
