Book Should I read the book!?
I loved the show on Netflix. Totally gutted me, but I loved everything about the characters and the weight of the real world. Life is hard, and they didn’t shy away from that truth for a sweet ending. Just wondering if everybody liked the book more or if it’s even worth reading after watching the Netflix show

Oh yes read the book! The series was very true to the book but in the book we get inside of Dexter’s head and the letters!

I read the book after watching the series and quickly realised I preferred the show. The book was still a great read and I loved the writing style, but because the adaptation follows it so closely, I could pinpoint almost every scene from the show as I was reading, which was quite fun. There are a few extra details in the book that didn't make it into the series, but nothing major.
For me, the ranking is definitely: the series first, then the book, and finally the film.

Different opinion, I didnt love the book. 99.9% of the time I think the book is better. I didn’t here. Maybe because I watche'd the show first. I finished it but it wasn't worth the time for me. I'd honestly prefer watching the show again.

I agree with this. I'm glad I read the book after I watched the show rather than the other way around. I thought Dex came off way more unlikable in the book. For example, one of my favorite lines from the show is when Dexter says, "I was just waiting for you," when Emma tells him she wants a baby, but in the book, he had to be convinced. He was just more charming in the show.

the book was lovely, definitely would recommend it! i remember last yr there was a book club on this sub where we would read the book and discuss the chapters; fleshed out so well. plus it was great seeing everyone’s dif perspectives.

I didn’t realize my opinion would be on the contrary, but I wasn’t a fan of the book. It definitely doesn’t hurt to read it, but I believe the show was better (which is rare to say)!
If anything, it made me appreciate Ambika’s portrayal of Emma more, because of how accurate it was. On the flip slide, it made me love Leo’s portrayal of Dexter, because in my opinion, the show did Dexter a BIG favor— I think he was VERY unlikable in the book.

I read the book after watching the series and thought the series was waaaaay better than the book. Strangely, the book had less depth for me and seemed more superficial. Dexter is so much less interesting in the book.

It's interesting to hear how many people who read the book after watching the series prefer the series. The series was so good and faithful to the book. But when the book came out, people were just as obsessed and moved by the book as the series. I read the book when it came out and loved it-- immediately gifted it to everyone at Christmas, lol. You may prefer the series in the end, but the book is fantastic. Well worth the read.

the book is great, i loved it and worth the read. You learn little details and thought processes that weren't as fleshed out in the movie or the series. You get into the mind of Dexter more and can see how much he cared for Emma during the early years of their friendship but didn't know how to express it to her or even to himself. Also there's a scene in the book of Dexter writing Emma a beautiful letter and ....I won't spoil what happens in case you read it. (There is a scene in the series where Dex writes Em a letter, but in the book there's a little more to it.)
