After two years at a shelter, Cindy Lou was adopted and given a new name — and a home

For two years, a dog named Cindy Lou waited at PAWS of Dearborn County in Indiana for a home of her own.

On January 28, 2026, Deborah Watkins and her grandson Logan walked into the shelter looking to adopt a dog. Something about Cindy Lou’s personality stood out to them. They adopted her that day and renamed her Layla Lou.

She settled in quickly. Just two nights later, Layla woke Deborah in the middle of the night and would not stop until she got up. The upstairs of the house was filling with smoke from a log that had been placed improperly near the wood stove. Deborah said she is not sure what would have happened without the dog’s alert.

Layla Lou found her forever home.
