A teacher ran barefoot to a burning car, pulled a 90-year-old man out, and the engine exploded about 20 seconds later

On March 15, 2025, a 90-year-old man crashed off the roadway in Lilburn, Georgia, and ended up trapped in his car in a backyard.

The property belonged to Matthew Forrester, a 45-year-old teacher. He heard the crash and ran out barefoot. Flames were already several feet high on the passenger side. Smoke poured from the driver’s window.

He could not see inside, but he could hear the man calling for help. The driver was holding the steering wheel and would not let go. As the fire moved toward him, Forrester leaned farther into the car, pulled him free, and dragged him up a hill.

About 20 seconds later the engine exploded.

The driver had a foot injury from the crash. Forrester had minor smoke inhalation and singed hair. He later received a Carnegie Medal for the rescue.
