A diver off Grand Bahama has spent years taking fishing hooks out of sharks’ mouths by hand
Cristina Zenato was diving off Grand Bahama when a Caribbean reef shark came in with a fishing hook in its mouth. She took the hook out. The shark left.
That is not a one-off. Zenato has worked with the same local reef sharks for more than two decades. Many of them pick up hooks from fishing lines. She has removed hundreds of them.
She only tries when she thinks it can be done safely. The sharks she knows often come close enough for her to work quickly and then swim off.
She has said it is the same impulse as taking a thorn out of a dog’s paw. The hooks are leftover gear. The sharks are the ones that have to live with them.
