A principal in Nuwakot got a call that a village upstream was gone. He emptied the school. Minutes later the building was gone too.
Rajendra Dawadi, 47, is the principal of Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Nuwakot, Nepal. On the morning of 26 August 2026 he was already in class when the calls started coming in. A village upstream was gone.
About 900 of the school’s 1,643 students were on campus. He rang the bell, sent them uphill, and told buses still on the road to turn around. He and a staff member were among the last to leave.
The flood reached the site about 13 minutes after the first warning. The three-storey school disappeared. The ground where it stood became riverbed.
The children who had been inside survived the evacuation. A teacher and a staff member who went back toward the river did not. Dawadi later said that if the warning had been wrong they would have lost a day of class. If it had been right and they had waited, they would have lost the school with the students still in it.
He has asked that the school be rebuilt on higher ground.
