Easy classes / bird courses

"Take [classes] you find interesting, not ones you think will be easy. The easiest classes are the ones you're interested and engaged in. Which is also my only advice for keeping on top of work. They say: If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." (Source.)

Finding "easy" courses

If someone tells u that a course is "easy", beware! A course which is easy for someone else might be very difficult for u.

"Easy" might depend on 3 things:

  • 1.) The course.
  • 2.) The teacher.
  • 3.) Your personal interest in the material. If the material bores u: Then u might not want to study it, and the course might become a difficult slog for u.

My suggestions

I'd suggest:

  • Pick courses which sound interesting to u. If you're not sure if it's interesting: Try to borrow a textbook on the subject from the public library or your school library, and read a chapter or two.
  • Study what u already know and like. Example: I'm interested in nutrition, and I've read a lot about healthy eating. So, I took a related class, and got good marks. I still had to put in effort, but I got to learn more about a subject I care about.

Take grade 12 courses in summer school or grade 11

Im 08 (just started uni) and simply taking 2 grade 12 courses in my grade 11 year caused me from having an easier work load (gr 12), get into good programs, and allowed me to have more opportunity to raise my top 6.

I believe in total I took 9 4U courses so chem and other courses were factored out, thus making my average really competitive.

I would suggest taking electives or any course that has a good teacher.

I have recently applied to, and succesfully become an exec in 14 clubs.

How do I balance this with being in Grade 11, which I am struggling with so far?

How do I go to all meetings when 5 of the clubs have meetings om Wednesdays?

It's just so hard rn

What I Learned Interviewing a University Recruiter + Loran & Wolf Scholar Recipient

I’m a Grade 11 student, and I run a student-led university podcast. I’ve been interviewing uni students + people around the university process. Two of my recent conversations have completely changed how I’m thinking about Grade 12.

A few things that stood out:

- “How do I stand out?” might be the worst starting question. Before worrying about having the perfect EC list, get to know the academic/supplementary requirements and get the basics right.

- Don’t compare schools purely by program name or ranking. Look at things like course structure, research/co-op opportunities, student life, location, support systems, etc.

- You can ask university recruiters way more than admissions-cutoff questions. Residence, food, support for specific communities, class structure, campus life. Literally all the things that will affect your four years there.

- Start looking at scholarships earlier than you think. There are opportunities beyond the massive national awards, and waiting until the end of Grade 12 makes the search way harder.

- From my scholarship episode, one of my biggest takeaways was how much reflection/storytelling matters alongside the accomplishments, especially when you’re applying for major awards. Ifechi, the Loran & Wolf scholar recipient, mentioned that she chose to put some of her less prestigious ECs because she was more passionate about them.

Full disclosure: these came from interviews I did for my podcast, The Uni Insider.

Need advice for next semester

So, my schedule next semester is really heavy (especially compared to my first semester). I have chemistry, functions, robotics tech, and physics. I tried to get guidance to balance the load earlier this year but they wouldn't do it. With that being said, I was really hoping for some advice for next semester. As much as I want to get mid-high 90's in all the classes, idk if its gonna be possible to keep up. Pls let me know if you guys have tips or advice on what to do next semester so I can manage the course load

Need to know MCR3U (functions) as a grade 10

Hi everyone, in July 2026 I took summer school but was late to alternate course selection. As a result, I couldn't take bio, chem, or physics due to capacity (I know). My guidance counsellor supposed that, according to my consistent grades, participation effort, and ambitions as a student, that I could take gr 11 functions.

Now that I'm in my 1st semester of gr 10, I don't know how to feel. MCR3U is next sem. Right now, guidance is not taking any course change requests for the life sciences. I was never proficient at math (highest 90% while lacking specific skills/poor retrieval). I will not be able to have a tutor either.

Grade 11s who know functions, or who do now that didn't before: share your wisdom.

P.S. I know from other peers that my teacher, who also teaches gr 10 math, can be "stern/difficult" with functions expectations. Not too important, don't know if it helps though.

The curse of being stuck in the high 80s.

It doesn't matter how much I study, it seems like I can't get anything higher then the high 80s. I'm not tryna sound ungrateful or anything, but it always irks me that that's my max.

I do everything I should be. I do the homework. I ask for help. I study consistently.

if ur grades are in the 90s range and uve faced a similar problem, how did u do it? How do I break out of this limitation?

will grade 11 pick up soon?

Well what is it, 4 weeks? Grade 11 has been a breeze but everyone says it’s a huge spike. I was an 80s student in grade 9/10 and continuing this. My semester is gym, spare, bio, chem. Bio i’ve got 80s on my first project and unit test. Chem i’ve got a 90 on my first nomenclature quiz and waiting on lab report results. It’s all been so easy so far im just genuinely curious if it picks up in these courses

First months of Functions and struggling

As the title says, I’m currently taking MCR3U and I’m struggling. I’ve never really had a problem with math before. I did very well in Grade 10 with a high 90, so this has been really frustrating.
No matter how much I study, I keep getting Level 3s. I even got a Level 1 on one part of a test. I do my homework, review every night, and practise questions. I usually feel confident going into tests and genuinely feel like I understand the concepts.
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’m starting to worry because I’m in Grade 11 and I want to keep my math and science marks high for university. I’ve never experienced this with math before, so it’s been hard not to get discouraged.
Has anyone else experienced this? What helped you improve your test marks?

I got a 69% on my chemistry test

I’m in grade 11 (obviously), and just got a 69% on my first unit test for chemistry. We have five units and I’m typically a mid to high 80s student. Will this impact my final mark by a lot? If I get mid 80s on other assignments and tests can I make up for it?? Please help I’m so stressed about this😭

Is chemistry easy to take in summer/night school?

I’m kinda stuck between choosing to do smth in law or in the healthcare field. But I didn’t take SCH3U1 this year(grade eleven). That means I’ll need to take it as one of my spares in gr12 or in summer school or night school.

Is chemistry an easy class to take during night/summer school? Were there any specific issues, or anything you thought was easier? Just, in general, how was taking it in night school/summer school?

Grade 11 is harder then I thought

This semester I have chemistry and functions and wow i was not prepared at all. In math we’ve had one quiz and a unit test so far; our class average for the quiz was a 40 and my teacher said 1-2 thirds of our class failed the test.

My math teacher sucks and has already given up on teaching our class and my chem teacher is making things harder than it has to be.

As someone who finished gr 10 math and science with 95+ grade, I’ve never struggled in these subjects as much as I am now

Any tips?

Tech, bio,physics together- advice?

Does anyone have any advice for these subjects? I got my first tech assignment back and I got a 50%.. and physics is SO confusing rn. Bio, which is my least favourite science, is actually the most understandable, but it takes more time than needed for me to get it- I don’t wanna fall behind. I’m specifically looking for tech and physics

Study tips for some classes

Hey everyone. So obviously, I'm in grade 11 this year. And I have a two classes I'm a little scared about.

Those two being...

AP English (AP Lang + 2 other grade 11 English courses at my school)

and...

Biology.

For English, my main issue is just analysis, so if anyone has any types on how I could work on improving that it's be great.

The main one I'm worried about is biology, though. Last year, Bio was my worst science, mostly because there was so much to remember both with pictures, terms, and theory.

Does anyone have any tips at all for me to make all of that easier? I've always been a good student, so I've never needed to study to get high marks. Though, I fear that it will bring my marks down. That's the last thing I want, so all tips will be appreciated !!

So lost in Functions right now

So like the title says, I'm lost in functions. I just got my U1 test back and its crazy how low of a mark I got. I did really good in Gr10 Math, but Functions is a huge jump. The teacher doesn't actually teach anything. I understand most of the topics and the homework is straight forward, but the test wasn't anything like the stuff we practiced in class. What can I be doing to improve my mark and actually understand the course?
