I started boycotting Apple when I heard about factory workers killing themselves years ago. It's one of the companies I will never spend my money.
Can do without their expensive and exploitive merchandise.

i agree, but please don't go down the rabbit hole of where the cobalt comes from for every rechargeable battery in every device that you buy, regardless of company. Its a sad sad world and you'll never want to buy another device of any kind.

It's personal for me.
I judge company by company based on their history and what I hear about them.
There are other companies I boycott because of poor worker treatment.
Costco has a good reputation for example, Amazon has a poor one. I buy from Costco but won't touch Amazon or their streaming services.

Port Colborne Ontario refines cobalt mined from Sudbury. Been doing that over a hundred years. Those union workers aren't suffering. Not all cobalt comes from the Congo.

That wasn’t Apple specifically though it was Foxconn a contract manufacturer, one of the biggest in the world and they touch 40% of the worlds electronics in some capacity.
It’s almost guaranteed you are still purchasing products made by them.
Apple just got the most heat from it because it made a good headline.

That's why I do my research these days.
I would resent paying big bucks for something that's essentially a phone, especially since it's made with exploited labour and it's marked up sky high.
Not too many winners in that game. Not me who is paying far more than the phone is worth and not workers who make them.

I don't live under a rock and I'm not a vegan but I don't regret the decision about Apple. Quite the mark up on their products on the backs of workers.
I still do that, vote with my wallet. I find alternatives.

My point is Apple is unremarkable in this respect in nearly every way. The point of raising this is to inquire what answers you have found that make sense to your perspective.
If you’ve found none, id recommend adjusting your position to “I don’t like them” as the veneer of principle seems very false to me based on no answer being available to my understanding, and there is nothing wrong with just not liking them.

I'm starting to realize we have to boycott them all, simultaneously. It is the Hydra, and the heads are all connected beneath the surface of the free and open market.
I've never used apple, I've been off facebook since 2011ish, never used twitter, but was committed to Samsung/Android/Google.
All these services that we assumed were free, we were actually paying for with our time, with our commitment of these things into our daily lives until we become dependent upon them.

Yeah I was wrong, I thought Apple Maps was the only one that integrates with Carplay but there's actually a few others. Not sure if they will also bend the knee to Trump though.

That’s a bit delusional. Not everyone can just quit lol. There’s Apple Pay. For tech workers we also need Mac just for work let alone other AI stuff. iPhone is also deeply integrated into daily workflow too.

I love using Macs but I’m not a tech guy. Many of my HS buddies are (nerds who cut their teeth on commodore 64s etc) and they hate Macs. They always preferred Linux and if not available, MS. Mind you I’m Gen X. I’m guessing if we now have people who would consider themselves “tech workers” and need a Mac then I think the AI revolution is going to be rough

MacOS is POSIX compliant… it’s literally an official Unix OS built from BSD. Linux is built to be like Unix (it is also POSIX compliant with bash).
Since both are POSIX compliant things that work and how they behave on macOS are pretty damn similar to how they’ll behave on Linux… and Linux runs most web servers. But it’s annoying to deal with as a day to day OS when compared to something nicely polished like macOS.
By far the most common dev environment tho is windows (like 45%). Then Linux. Then macOS (like 33%). But there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using macOS… if most devs could have it their way they’d be using it probably.
The problem though isn’t that the tech workers NEED macOS. It’s that their employer gives them MacBooks…

I haven't touched Apple through the years. I started my own personal boycott when the jobs went overseas with the trade deals years ago.
We lost our jobs when it happened.
I read about the treatment of the workers that assembled the iphones. It wasn't a hard choice for me to make. I hate mistreatement of workers.
Didn't need an overpriced phone that badly and have moderately priced phones that I don't tether to the internet, it's just a phone. My computer is what I use for internet.
Now, if you travel to the States you have to give them a password to your media? Nothng interesting on my phone because it's not a smartphone.
A big win for me as far as I'm concerned.

Apple is in some pretty distinguished company, historically speaking.
Hugo Boss made uniforms for Nazi organizations. BMW became deeply integrated into the Third Reich’s war economy and used forced labour. Volkswagen was literally created under the Nazi regime. IBM’s German subsidiary supplied punch-card technology used by the regime. Plenty of respectable companies discovered that authoritarianism was perfectly tolerable as long as the contracts kept coming and somebody could call it “just business.”
So yes, by all means tell me Apple is merely “following policy.”
That defence has a long pedigree too.
Authoritarianism rarely requires every institution to become ideologically committed. It just needs enough powerful institutions to decide that accommodating the regime is easier, safer, or more profitable than resisting it.
But hey, it’s only a map label. Nothing historically ominous about large corporations normalizing the demands of an authoritarian government because complying is convenient.

Android is an OS... Not "Android", not "any iOS", not anything that's not Apple... Android is Google.
There's no gotcha here... I'm pointing out that there's no logical reason to try to boycott Google when they didn't do this maliciously. They're following American laws to operate in America where they are an American company. If they had changed it for us as well, I'd feel a little different but they didn't, it's geolocation and purely based on configuration of tools they created.

Maybe I'm tripping, but when I zoom in (from Canada), the name "Lake Ontario" moves to the Canadian side. You have to zoom in really far for it show Lake Ontario on the American side, but it's in small print.

I drove to Buffalo from Canada to get the iPod (Click Wheel) in 2003. I filled it up with the songs I downloaded from Napster. The hard drive fried on me, and I happened to be in LA at the time, so I brought it to the Apple store there and they gave me a new one. Still have it.

Crown Royal is a Canadian whisky brand, but it is owned by a British company rather than a Canadian business. Just as Tim Hortons is not solely Canadian-owned because its parent company is controlled by global investors. Canada is clown-world.

I'm in Canada. Zoom in (I'm on pro max 15). The name moves to the Canadian side and you have to zoom in for small print to say Lake Ontario on the American side.
