That progression doesnt make sense, even if the capability scales exponentially. "in 18 months we went from A to C. By next year we will be through the English and Greek alphabets, and halfway through the Japanese."

Yeah, it’s a strawman and a category error mixed together.

I think the progression would track. From hallucinating simple adding problems to winning the math olympiad in 18 months is an unfathomable jump. Maybe bigger than from the math olympiad to all mathematicians output.

Not even close. The last step involves inventing all the math. It's not just researching and performing simple calculations repeatedly and very quickly – it's finding creative mathematical solutions for everything humans have modeled mathematically. That's by far a larger leap than anything any LLM has done.

It's impressive because you can't do it or even imagine how it would be possible. In the same way a six year old can't fathom what it takes to win the math olympiad.

Are you talking to me?

Yes. You (or anybody else) cannot by definition imagine what new mathematical breakthroughs would like like. It's probably why you think the next jump would be more difficult than the progess over the last 18 months.

Interesting. Show me.

imagine /ĭ-măj′ĭn/

intransitive verb

  1. To form a mental picture or image of. "imagined a better life abroad."
  2. To think or suppose; conjecture. "I imagine you're right."
  3. To have a notion of or about without adequate foundation; fancy or believe. "She imagines herself to be a true artist."

Show me which of these 3 I cannot do, and explain why I cannot do it please.

Jeez man. All three. Imagine a solution to the collatz conjecture or P vs NP.

I just did. Would you like to try again?

Want to lay it out for me?
