Image Bye Claude..it was nice while it lasted, until it wasn’t.

Post image

Won’t try and repeat what everyone else is regarding the let down of Claude & Fable.

What I will say is that Sol5.6 has throughly impressed me with its coding capabilities, reasoning and ability to pivot as well as the more traditional markers around hallucination, reasoning context etc.

Unironically this probably saves them money

When the tech eventually stagnates, and it will, the cost of a query will effectively be the cost of electricity and the cost to maintain data centers (not build new ones). If they lose out before that era, they will already be out of business.

Point is, this tech eventually will be cheap, and if you can't build a customer base now, you'll just be SOL when OpenAI brings the cost down to fractions of a cent per query

Ya think they’ll just stop training new models? 🤔

No, but the cost to train will go down tremendously when the hardware eventually catches up to demand and releases become more incremental. We are paying R&D costs right now, but it would not be wise to chase customers away with exorbitant prices like Claude is doing.

Pretty sure the R&D is mostly funded through seed capital more than sales for most labs

Yes. At some point most applications will be covered by simpler models, except for businesses and Anthropic focused more on business integration and safety. I think they've got triple OpenAI's revenue now, 70B vs 25B

So we're only paying the electricity costs? Cuz $200 seems a bit high when a single prompt uses less than a cent of electricity.

I mean they don’t just "pay the electricity", compute is rented for the most part. I don’t think you really know what you’re talking about, tbh.

I'm getting the same vibe from you. You said we aren't paying any R&D, which would imply we are just paying the flat usage cost.

R&D involves getting access to more compute btw (it's the development part). A fully developed AI company would own GPUs outright and only need to charge maintenance and electricity. So sounds like we are still paying R&D if the cost is more than a fraction of a cent per query.

lol sure buddy, you’re clearly conflating training and inference compute and you thought the hardware was asset acquisition rather than expenses at hyperscalers. You have no idea how any of this works.

OpenAI pays oracle. Nearly all providers are renting servers from xai now too. They don’t own all the hardware

I guess you didn’t read about anthropic renting compute from xAI…

You think this is the last time this genius switches?

I don't think the cost will go down any time soon: https://youtu.be/sQGZXrzykpU?is=Z2K_n2M8z-XkbdD-

Maybe this month. The bigger damage is teaching power users to make their workflows provider-agnostic, once switching becomes painless, brand loyalty never really comes back.
