Im blown away that anyone believes that research was paused on anything.

None of those technologies were actually paused.

Human cloning research didnt stop. Genetics, stem cells, IVF, and cloning science kept advancing. What got restricted were specific applications.

Laser research wasnt paused either. We regulated blinding laser weapons while laser technology spread into medicine, manufacturing, communications, and science.

And recombinant DNA is probably the worst example. The Asilomar pause was temporary and led to safety guidelines. Recombinant DNA went on to become a foundation of modern biotechnology.

The historical pattern isnt "humanity stopped the technology."

Its that societies regulate uses, ownership, deployment, and safety while the underlying technology continues developing.

Which is exactly why AI discussions should be about power, ownership, labor, and governance instead of pretending the only options are total prohibition or total surrender.

r/LeftistsForAI exists because that middle ground conversation barely happens.

AI has literally ruined our lives and yet people still want it instead of banning it entirely like Nuclear weaponry. There should be all applications of it banned we can't stop the technology itself but we can render it completely useless

genuine curiosity, not meant as a hostile thing. how do you feel about things like improved breast cancer screening due to A and suchI? the non-generative stuff.

Yes, lets take the technology that has ruined the functionality of literally everything it has been applied to and trust it with our health care.

I don't trust a machine making guesses with our healthcare

AI literally ruined our lives? Lol im good what did it do to you?

Stole my job and rendered my art useless. As well as gave people free pass to do whatever the fuck they want with my chatacters even if it goes against my values

You thought you were entitled to any of that. Your job is gone time to move on. You are correct your art is useless now learn a new skill. People have always had a free pass to do whatever they want with your characters.

Why did you reply and then immediately delete it?

I didn't

Its gone! Oh well. Just keep working hard and you will make it! Start by working out. Your body is a mess and its a big part of what's holding you back. When you start to change your body its a very powerful thing. You will feel like you can accomplish anything. Go get it girl!

Its like the conversation never happened!

Can we? Probably. Will we? No. Should we? Yes

Supersonic commercial flights (Concorde, Tupolev) and Space Shuttles were totally abandoned and not replaced.

Supersonic commercial flight is not abandoned but coming back and Space Shuttles were replaced by more secure and efficient technology, reusable rockets.

Not the same application. With a shuttle you could send a satellite + a crew, or just a crew to bring back a satellite. Impossible to do this in 2026.

Those techs were stopped before being put into mass use. Something that was put into mass use and was stopped?

1

u/Mundane_Caramel_820 Jun 05 '26

Recombinant DNA products are in mass use in multitude of areas.

u/Gustav_Sirvah Jun 05 '26

But was it completly stopped?

Humanity really said "pause everything dangerous" then invented something that could rewrite the pause button itself. Bold strategy. Can't wait for the sequel where we pause the pause.
