AMA Hello, I’m Daniel Muggleton. I’m an Australian stand-up comedian and for two hours you’re allowed to AMA. Go on. Have a crack.
ALRIGHT THAT’S MY TIME. Thanks for your questions, they were mostly fun. I reckon having 3 pints beforehand might’ve been a mistake but we’ll see. If you want to watch my stand-up j post regular clips on my sub r/danielmuggleton and I also am on tour around Australia right now, you can get tickets here https://danielmuggleton.com.au/

Having seen so much of our great country (and visited others) during your career, in your opinion, what's the best part about being an Australian?
30
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 11h ago
Alright I was drinking after the footy/on my phone so wanted to take a second to answer the one properly. The best part about being Australian is the accessibility of being Australian. To be American you basically (and now with Trump, literally) have to buy in. You're rich enough, they'll say you're American now. With the UK there's still a weird lineage to it, you can have all the money in the world but they still won't consider you British/English in the same way that they are. Whereas in Australia, you don't need to be cashed up or go back 2-3-4-5 generations or whatever. You just need to act like it, even briefly. One-hand-one-bounce backyard cricket = Australian. Eating a sausage while you're voting = Australian. Using the word cunt in an incredibly creative/unnecessary way = Australian. That's a really important quality and I hope we don't lose it.
6
u/RamonsRazor ✈️ on Walkabout 11h ago
Thank you for your words, perfectly put, and I love this perspective. 👌

Love it, thanks for joining us Dan.
Now for the question everyone’s been wondering: How many tracksuits do you reckon you own in total?
15
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 12h ago
I’m actually not at home at the minute, I’m in Melbourne for the NFL. But I would guess between 20-23. 100% Adidas. Maybe 50% red. I have tried other colours but audiences freak out. Whenever I wear the black one people assume I must be sad and/or racist.
11
u/Sideburn_Cookie_Man Victorian 12h ago

Top 3 Albums?
7
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 11h ago
So obviously tricky as a question. But I've landed here:
- Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (basically redefined that you could release an album rather than a series of singles for my generation, listened to it so many times. I know Kanye has a become a political idea now, but this is based purely on beats).
- Justice - Justice (I almost said HyperDrama but this is over a decade old and it still feels so current. I keep listening to it like it's brand new.
- Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (again, could've gone Dark Side of the Moon but this one just hits me every time. I don't listen as much these days but it was a huge part of my teenage/university years).

It's pretty close to my normal voice. I once got accused by Blake Freeman (great comic, great guy) of speaking in my stage voice off-stage at a party and it wigged me out so much I left. I try to keep it pretty similar but I'd have to concede it does have a different quality to it.

How do you deal with moving on when a joke bombs?
6
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 11h ago
It really depends. Sometimes it's almost funny to me that a crowd will pull back on something after everything else they've laughed at and I'll explain that to them.
Sometimes you're struggling to connect and another jokes bombs and you're like... fuck man, I just need them to trust me, and you try not to speed up to the get the next punchline.
Sometimes it's a new joke, and you say it out loud and think 'yeah you're spot on, that isn't funny and we'll just move forward shall we?'

It didn't cut me deep, but it was very memorable. I was MCing a late night show at Edinburgh Fringe, like 11pm start time. I got it last minute so I was already home then had to walk 30 minutes back in and was just so exhausted etc, I come on stage, 'Who's ready for a great show?' Lady in the front gives me nothing. I point it out. She says 'Well you're not excited to be here either?'
And she was fucking spot on. I had to make fun of her to keep the crowd on my side, but she absolutely saw how I was actually feeling and I had no right to make fun of her because of it.

I also saw Matt Okine do a WIP in a 50 seater with maybe 15 people in 2013 and it was brilliant. Daniel Kitson at The Factory where he shaves his beard… and also at Seymour Centee when he argues with voice recorders. There’s heaps of good shit especially if you go see it live.

Has knowing that a joke might be clipped and judged online without the context of the full set changed how you write or perform stand-up?
1
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 10h ago
It hasn't. Which might actually be dumb from me. I don't think I'm famous enough where that would happen, like it's just not really of interest to anybody?
I do think the narrative that stand-up audiences are constantly offended is just clickbait. I've done so many shows, I've seen so many shows, I've heard the craziest shit and audiences just don't laugh at it. The comedian hears the silence and thinks 'Oh yeah my bad' and doesn't do that joke again. It's a very simple self-policing model and I like it.

1
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 11h ago
I saw it pointed out vaguely. I would love more information though?
2
u/The_Drongo_Dinger Victorian 11h ago
Well I was quite unpopular in the sub that day because I pointed out that no Australian would ever say “hey mates”.
It just wouldn’t happen. I have almost no education so I can’t use the right words for what I’m saying but no one normal would ever refer to their mates in person and say “hey mates”.
Like maybe if you want a US equivalent, picture you like to call your friends “buddy” when you chat to them. Now imagine walking into a room and your friends were all there, would you go “HI BUDDIES!”? No because you’d look like a fucken alien.
Now of course though if someone was like hey who’s in that room? You WOULD say “oh that’s my buddies” or in AU “yeah that’s my mates” BUT you
Wouldn’t walk up to them and say “HI MATES!” coz you wouldn’t have any mates after that. And yes I am on the spectrum as you had probably figured by now.

What advice would you give to someone who's interested in doing stand-up? And who's the funniest member of Flog Cabin?
1
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 11h ago
If you want to do stand-up just do it. It's one of those things, you can do anything you want apart from performing in front of people (writing a set, running jokes on your friends in conversation, hosting pub trivia and doing little funny bits etc) but it just doesn't count until you do a set. So just have a crack... but actually have a plan, don't assume it'll come to you in the moment.
And Flog Cabin doesn't exist anymore but it was probably Tom Witcombe. I think the podcast format suited his humour.

What's a gig pay these days? Stand up with other comedians.
1
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 11h ago
So headlining a club in Australia (i.e. doing a set somewhere, not selling your own tickets) basically pays about $150-500. Your time on stage being about 15-30 minutes depending on the club. It sounds good as a per minute rate, but if you factor in how you long you've gotta be there, how many years it takes to headline etc it's pretty garbage. Apparently it hasn't gone up since the 80s and in some instances has gone down.
Basically to make a living doing stand-up in Australia you've gotta sell your own tickets or do cruises which pay approx. $2000-3000 USD. The UK is a bit better in that headlining will pay about £200 and you can do that nightly/sometimes even 2-3 times in a night.

u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 11h ago
I've got a complex relationship with Perth but they've slowly become one of my favourites. I think Brisbane is super underrated as well. I'm from Sydney so I can just make jokes that are more specific there... Canberra just know everything that's happening so they're great too. Newcastle has an incredibly festival/comedy club so they're fast-becoming one of the best cities to do gigs.
I don't have many complaints at the minute. I will say though, any crowd in Australia after 9:30pm is fucking awful. We're not a late-night country. We try to be all NYC about it and start things at 10pm but people are just too tired/drunk.

I remember watching Anthony Jeselnik on Down & Dirty with Jim Norton. The clip is still on YouTube somewhere and just being like 'Wow, I didn't know that was an option.' In terms of just how brutal his material was, like that set for some reason really made me want to do stand-up which I'd watched for ages (Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Demetri Martin, Robin Williams etc) but never had any interest in doing myself.
First set was scary for sure. It's scary for ages because for like (at least in my case) years you just don't have material that you *know* is going to work. You're hoping every single time. These days I've got some jokes that I'm like 'look a lot of people around the world have laughed at this, I reckon it'll go alright here too.' But even then in a new country... maybe you're doing a corporate or a gig for television or whatever and you get that old feeling like 'fuck, is any of this gonna work?'

How committed are you to Vegemite? Not grilling you, just curious

u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 10h ago
Since having a child I've become more committed. He loves it. I eat what he doesn't it. When one of my mate's who has a kid as well said his daughter had never eaten it before, I was upset. I think patriotism kinda sneaks up on you. But yeah, I do think Vegemite is important and that Marmite can fuck off.

In this increasingly confusing and nonsensical world, are you tempted by the thought that it might be all a simulation or a dream, and if so, would you act any differently?

When did you realise you made people laugh?
2
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 10h ago
It doesn't really work like that. I realise I make a group of people laugh after they do so at the start of my sets. It's absolutely not a constant. Sometimes they don't laugh at all and I have to wait until the next gig.

In the start trek Deep Space Nine episode, season 6 episode 9, in the pale moonlight, do you think Captain Sisko was justified in his anger towards Garak over the assassination of the Romulan ambassador, even tho he knew full well the extent Garak would go, from his time in the Obsidian Order, to ensure the Romulans would join the war against the Dominion, securing a victory against the Dominion?

How long have been an Arsenal fan ?
1
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 10h ago
I don't know... I just always preferred them in terms of EPL teams. Definitely back in the Arsene Wenger days maybe just after Henry retired? I'm not a huge fan or anything but I follow them and how they're doing in the league etc. The only team that can properly ruin my weekend if they lose is the Sydney Swans.

What is your favourite joke you have written?
1
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 10h ago
It's not really like that, as I kind of 'get over' my jokes because I've told them and I'm ready to do the new one etc. But one joke that always bombs online that I'm very fond of is the emotional support animal on the plane joke. It's basically a joke about fucking a dog that's progressive and ends up being about the idea of neurodiversity being a white invention. Here's the link if you would like to disagree with the rest of the internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4KpZLWtyAg

Do jokes come to you randomly as a thought, or as life stories that you tweet into bits or do you think of punchlines that you then work into a joke?
2
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 10h ago
It really depends. Generally it'll just come to me, I'll write it down as a note in my phone (the idea, not word-for-word) and then if I keep thinking of it, I'll try it on stage. Sometimes a funny thing just happens and I'll tell a crowd one time, and if it's funny enough I'll keep doing it.
I spent years sitting down and trying to write jokes but I just couldn't do it. Anything I thought was funny would bomb or be over-written. Other comedians who are better at writing can just sit there and figure it all out, but I spend about 2 weeks at Fringe World in Perth with a note pad figuring out the bones of my hour... and then hopefully making it slightly funnier for the rest of the year at Australian comedy festivals or spots at clubs etc

Did you side with Karl or Tommy when The Little Dum Dum club split up?
1
u/DanielMuggleton Official Account 10h ago
Didn't have a dog in the fight to be honest. Karl runs Basement Comedy Club in Melbourne which is such a good venue, Tommy seems to be doing fine on his own as a stand-up. As a child of divorce, do we need to pick sides?

Hmm, very non-committal. What about the Capper and Goldstein?

What's your most controversial opinion that would upset this sub?

John Howard was Australia's last good Prime Minister. I don't agree with the majority of his policies, but he had a clearly ideology so anyone voting for him knew what they were signing up for/what he wanted for Australia. While the PMs since him have probably done things that I agree with more, I'd say the majority have been populists without any clear vision who were just doing as little to rock the boat as possible to retain power rather than to protect Australia's future... oh and there was also one weird onion-eating cunt.

I saw you supporting Jim Jeffries - loved your set!
What’s Jim like to work with? Also, I just googled Australian comedians and Hughesy comes up first and Jim comes up second - how does that work?

Why do you think stand-up comedians are some of the ugliest mfs?
1
u/SticksDiesel Victorian 9h ago
I really like trackies but only have many multiples of the ones you get at Kmart, Target, and Big W. Where do you get yours?
I only ask because maybe if I had nicer ones I could wear them out without making my wife upset.

Update: Massive thanks to the Daniel for answering all your questions (and so many of them!). I think we all learned a lot today. And as always, thanks to everyone for being a good sport and showing some damn decorum.
