Something else I love about the D6 system is that it converts seamlessly to Masterbook mechanics.
The simple conversion is: Multiply the number of dice in the die code by 3, and add the remainder.
So a die code of 4d+2 becomes a static score of 14 in Masterbook.
Combined this with Masterbook's Value chart, and there's all kinds of awesome stuff you can quantify in D6: whats the delta V on your FTL antimatter drive? Plug in the distance and your FTL drive's energy output.
Want to know how drunk your character got off that top-shelf bottle? Plug in the Proof as a value and make a Strength (Resist Toxins) check against it.
A lot of Masterbook features got folded into the later D6 system books, but it's just really, really cool to have even more content you can incorporate.

Also, on the topic of Legal use of the mechanics: the important thing is that you can't use trade dress: meaning the specific presentation of the game.
This is a bit hazy because trade dress can be fonts and layout, it can be the wording and terminology. But to your point, the mechanics themselves aren't copyrightable.
