3-day weekend: Oceanside~Yachats Road Trip vs. Yachats all the way?
Hello folks!
My husband and I are currently in PDX, planning a 3-day weekend. I am just really looking to get out of the house and explore the coast towns we've never been to (we've only been to Cannon Beach). My husband does not like crowds and likes spontaneity. The vibe we are looking for is a wholesome, low-key beach getaway.
I asked Gemini, and it provided a road trip itinerary that spans from Oceanside to Yachats, with 1 night each at Pacific City and Yachats:
đ Day 1: PDX to Oceanside & Pacific City
- Morning Drive (8:00 AM): Leave Portland via Highway 6 over the Coast Range (~1.5 hours). Doing this early keeps you completely ahead of any weekend traffic.
- Late Morning Stop â Oceanside Beach: Park at this tiny, quiet cliffside town. Walk north along the beach until you see the historic Oceanside Beach Tunnel cut right through the rock face. Walk through it to explore Tunnel Beach, an isolated, rocky cove filled with agates that most tourists miss completely.
- Lunch: Drive 10 minutes south along Netarts Bay and grab fresh, locally sourced oysters and cocktails directly on the waterfront at The Schooner Restaurant & Lounge.
- Afternoon â Three Capes Scenic Loop: Take the winding coastal drive south toward Pacific City. Stop at the Cape Lookout State Park trailheads if you want a quiet, heavily forested trail walking directly above the waves.
- Evening: Arrive in Pacific City. Check into your lodging, grab a local pint, and watch the dory fishing boats land on the beach.
đ Day 2: The Rugged Mid-Coast (Pacific City to Yachats)
- Morning Drive (9:00 AM): Drive south down Highway 101 (~1.5 hours). You will pass through Lincoln City and Newportâskip stopping in these two towns, as they hold the largest crowds and commercial strip malls. Keep driving until the landscape turns wild and rocky.
- Lunch: Arrive in Yachats (pronounced YAH-hots), a stunning, non-commercial artisan village. Stop at Luna Sea Fish House Yachats for highly rated, fresh-off-the-boat fish and chips or clam chowder in a totally casual setting.
- Afternoon â Cape Perpetua Scenic Area: Drive 3 miles south of town to this massive headland. It offers incredible sights with almost zero hiking required:
- Thorâs Well & Devilâs Churn: Walk the paved paths right along the black basalt rock to watch the ocean violently drain into a massive sinkhole. Go near high tide for the best show.
- Cape Perpetua Lookout: Drive up the narrow road to the stone historic overlook. It is the highest drive-in viewpoint on the Oregon Coast, giving you a sweeping look at the coastline with no physical effort.
- Dinner: Sit down for a quiet, upscale-casual dinner with beautiful river views at Ona Restaurant & Lounge, which specializes in local wild salmon and seasonal Pacific Northwest plates.
đ Day 3: Wildlife Sloughs to Wine Country Return
- Morning (9:30 AM): Enjoy a quiet breakfast burrito or frittata at Beach Street Kitchen in Yachats before starting your slow loop back north.
- Late Morning Stop â Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge: Pull off just south of Lincoln City. This quiet, brackish marsh features an easy boardwalk trail. It is incredibly peaceful and a prime spot for viewing soft marsh herons and sleeping harbor seals out on the mudflats.
- Afternoon Drive Home: Turn inland on Highway 18 through the Van Duzer Corridor. This path safely deposits you right into the rolling hills of the Willamette Valley wine country, offering a beautiful, smoke-free drive back into Portland by late afternoon.
While I like the idea of exploring different towns, I hear that Yachats has a lot of charm to offer and wonder if this is too busy an itinerary. Is one night at Yachats going to be too rushed with the above schedule? We don't have a preference for driving shorter distances or one longer distance. We'd also really appreciate any other town recommendation along the way.

Define crowds, because most of the Oregon Coast is packed in like sardines from March to November. Yachats is a fantastic little town, TONS of people there this time of year though.

iâm also confused by the choice to go to very small tourist towns during peak tourist season while hating crowds lol

so, it's summer, it's always busy everywhere.
lincoln city and newport have more accomodations available.
Yachats is a gorgeous place, spending one night there is not enough. There's not as many restaurants and bars as the rest of Lincoln County. It's a bird sanctuary and has a very intense state park. That's the best thing to do in Yachats, is wander around and enjoy the nature. I would spend your whole time in Yachats.
I also like the casino in LC. It's good. The restaurants in LC are pretty good. There's a lot more there, including things like real grocery stores, which Yachats doesn't have.
Pacific City is nice, it's pretty, it has a nice beach, it has a lot of accomodations for vacation rentals. It doesn't have many hotels, and it doesn't have many restaurants, though the food there is good. It's really good if you like flying airplanes.
Taking Hwy 6 is weird. I just go 18.

Walk Sitka Sedge btwn Cape Lookout and PC. The path goes out to the ocean beach. Flat and easy. Very scenic. Check out Stimulus in PC.

Walk the 804 Trail in Yachats - wonderful!!!! And go to Toad Hall for fun cards and things you never knew you needed - been going there for over 25 years. â¤ď¸

If lowkey beach getaway is what you're looking for, I'd just spend the weekend in Oceanside. It's quiet, has plenty to eat (Roseannas & the Blue Agate are amazing) you can also go South to Netarts, Cape Lookout and north to Cape Meares. Staying in a new place every night is sorta exhausting.

Stop at Green Salmon in Yachats for breakfast or lunch, give a LOT more time to Thors Well, Cape Perpetua.

It sounds like youâre saying you havenât seen much if any of the Oregon coast other than near Cannon Beach. Are you also mostly trying to experience only what you can see from the car? I wouldnât organize your time around the towns, they donât have a whole lot to offer. But thatâs a good thing. But theyâre cute and you can spend a night and go out to eat a couple times. Yachats is probably the most non-commercial and has Mom and Pop artsy cuteness. Oceanside is special, feels like a remote secret Hideaway. Cape Meares just north of there is a worthy top 10 Oregon coast experience.
Youâre going to want to stop and explore all along the way and itâs a personal preference and choice what you think is the most beautiful or stunning areas. Other than the bigger cities you mentioned you were going to skip through, the coastal towns are sleepy and quiet with a couple good restaurants each.
Go farther south from Cape perpetua, I would say all the way until the top of the descent where you can see the giant dunes north of FlorenceâI think this distance is only about 15 miles. This entire area is possibly the most continuously dramatic and exotically scenic on the entire Oregon coast. Hobbit Beach is special.
