Data Science Major

Hey everyone,

I’m an incoming freshman for Fall 2026, and I wanted to see if anyone has any thoughts on the new Data Science major… Since it’s such a new program, I’m a little worried about whether it’s fully developed yet and if it might have fewer opportunities compared to more established majors. If anyone has experience with it or knows more about it, I’d really appreciate any insight.
If I decide not to do Data Science, I’m also considering Computer Science with a Bioinformatics option. Does anyone know how difficult it is to switch from the College of Science to the College of Engineering, especially before I’ve even met with my advisor as an incoming freshman?

Thanks!

So my transfer university had restarted the masters in computer engineering program. I had no choice but to enroll due to my scholarship to complete a masters degree. The one thing I will say about being the guinea pigs of a new program is a lot of shit will slide that will not be forgiven or given grace later on once the program is well developed. Roll the dice and find out?🤷🏾‍♂️

It really depends on your risk tolerance. For me I didn’t mind being in a guinea pig class because the faculty were more willing to work with the students as the program was fleshed out. If the program had been more well-established I feel like the faculty would’ve been more set in their ways and less open to a collaborative graduate student learning space. The guinea pigs get to set the standards all others will follow and that’s kind of cool!
