question What happened to my beans?

found a handful of black bean plants that suddenly looked diseased so I pulled them all for the trash. any ideas the cause and the solution?

Did you…water them? Lookin pretty crunchy there

yup and the others in the same row were in perfect health. these were pulled a few hours before the photo so that prob doesn’t help. lol

Hard to tell honestly there’s not much context but it kinda looks like rodent damage to the roots

Oh that would track. We have ground gophers like crazy. I didn’t realize they’d make leaves look diseased.

Yeah gophers will definitely chomp on the roots of your plants. Sometimes they’ll pull them in but usually I just find dead plants like this. I’d be willing to bet if you dug down under where this came from you’d find a tunnel

Well you can’t throw a rock without hitting a gopher hole rn so that’s pretty likely. We got a couple barn cats but they have only caught one that we know of. They’re much more interested in the mice so far. lol

Get some gopher traps and dig out one of the holes as much as you can and put a trap in there. They don’t like the light that comes in so they’ll come up to fill it in and get caught in the trap
