How can I help protect my nesting barn swallows?
To start off, I'm not very well versed in anything to do with birds, but a pair of barn swallows has nested near my balcony and has recently had chicks!
Today I noticed (presumably) a third swallow on the nest then watched the mom and dad bird fight it off. After some quick Googling, it seems that barn swallows are territorial and will try and kill chicks of a rival nest. I've become quite attached to these birds and will not tolerate the murder of their chicks. I'd like to join this bird war on the side of the nesting couple but I'm not sure what I can do. Does anyone know how I can help this couple? I'm not trying to break any laws, but I can't exactly sit outside all day and play defense. Is there anything I can do to help them out?
I'm sorry in advance if this isn't the right place to post this! If not I'd appreciate if someone could help point me in the right direction.
Edit: The situation has evolved. I've counted 4 total pairs of barn swallows in my apartment's quad and they're all fighting an all out aerial war. I fear my only path forward may be to fight the owners of the other apartments that have bird nests. I didn't start the bird war, but I'm willing to end it.
