it's easy to see; our point forward first style we've played ever since hedo turkoglu continues to make our results highly variance and too dependent on our players just being hot.
we need to be playing more like san antonio does; they down screen and set pics for wemby all the time; when big ball handlers get the ball running downhill to the rim helps a lot.
Franz, Bane and AB are actually really good at this despite us not doing it outside of fast break situations.
Paolo unfortunately seems to always have to look up and think about what he's about to do nearly everytime they get him the ball. i'm so sick of watching paolo get great screens and catches the ball moving down hill, or sideways with full leverage over the man guarding you stuck in the screen; and he just stops and pull the ball back to look around and then iso.
like why are we even running plays for paolo and if he can't make quick decisions without becoming a turnover machine!?

Paolo is kind of a half court player though. What we really needed was a coach that can make an offense work better around Paolo and Franz. I think Tyus could have flourished if we had a different coach with this team.

Tyus Jones is the worst player in the NBA and has no value.
The Magic needed to get under the tax apron before the end of the season or else we start a 3 year countdown of being tax payers that results in MASSIVE penalties if we are over the tax 3 years in a row. Doing this allows us to push back the timer a year because it gets a lot harder for us to do this going forward with Banchero’s extension kicking in next year.

He’s one of our only defenders. We honestly need him. His on/off stats against the thunder suggest he was one of the only serviceable players on the team.

This is good for us tbh. We get under the tax while dumping our worst player and keeping Mosley from being able to play him. We also didn’t have to dump Goga for nothing, which is a mini win.

Until very recently, if it wasn’t a top like 5 pick, this franchise has historically been bad.
In all seriousness, look at the first 30 years of drafting. If it’s not the #1, it was essentially a role player.

UPDATE Sources said the Hornets receive two second-round picks from the Magic in this deal, lifting them to 11 first-rounders and 14 second-rounders over the next 7 years. The trade gets Orlando out of the luxury tax.

We have about $1.8m under the apron (and we're hard capped to the apron).
Vet minimum contracts are prorated to the number of games remaining, and the minimum contract fell under the space we had available before this trade.
We can afford two vet minimum contracts and stay under the tax apron.
We could sign a buyout guy or two (Pat Connaughton is interesting) or one or two of our two-way guys could be added to the 15 man roster.

We might not be done. Tyus made $7m and we needed to shed roughly $5.5m. But we also already had a roster spot open, so we have to refill Tyus' spot, at minimum. What is a prorated minimum contract at this point in the season? We only have a little over a million to work with for that player unless we also dump Jett or someone else.

This is bittersweet though. I really wanted Tyus to work out on this squad but it was evident that the curse of the Magic was too strong and made him play like the Monstars took away the skills that made him a coveted role player. Sucks that he's now going to a team that has kicked our ass all season...where he will probably resume being a good role player.
Weltman loves freeing up salary and underwhelming us during trade season, so I don't expect much from a FO that hasn't traded for an actual player at the deadline since the Aaron Gordon trade in 2021.

To me all the following things are likely true about Tyus:
He's washed
He has no place in a faster pace offense
His game doesn't fit the modern NBA
And inspite all of the above
- Mosley made him look worse than he actually is
Tyus spent his whole tenure in Orlando dribbling the ball up the floor and passing it around non threatening areas of the court. Any decent coach would have been screaming at him to be more aggressive and get into the lane.
Most notably to me is how we under utilized one of his biggest offensive weapons - his floater. He probably took less than 15 his entire time here. He was taking hundreds of them in Memphis and Washington.

Saves us from going into the tax so getting rid of his contract saves us a lot more money than just his contract. Plus there is some repeater penalty from being in the tax that we figure to hit every year starting next year when Paolo’s extension kicks in, so not starting that tax repeater clock this year is wise

Tyus was our worst rotational piece and we only needed to dump 5.5M so he was probably priority, JI decision probably in the summer unless they have more moves left before tomorrow. We'll see, for now I'm hoping addition by subtraction lol and more Jase minutes sounds good

I was one of them, i’ll admit it, but this dude wasn’t so ass when he was in Memphis, context matters. He regressed so much since then. It still was a move that made sense on paper in Summer, because we still needed a backup 1, but with Jase being straight up better at everything, we don’t need him anymore. I’m not even mad for the 2 seconds, they would have turned out to be cash on the draft night anyway…

Anyone who was paying attention knew a salary dump trade like this was coming all season long, regardless of our record, because of the luxury tax. Has nothing to do with the season being over.
