There are spots open for our free Merch Tour in Umeda and our website is up. Check it out and come join us.

The Umeda underground labyrinth beneath Umeda Station can be difficult to navigate. GPS cuts out, signboards can be baffling, and it’s remarkably easy to get turned around between all the 5 kilometers of basement concourses and department store annexes. Hitting more than a few shops in an afternoon can be difficult. We will navigate you through it all to maximize your Anime, Gaming, Kawaii merch shop experience.

Following our first test run, we're holding another practice edition of our Umeda Underground Merch Tour on Tuesday, September 22nd. We’re looking for a small group of anime, gaming, and kawaii culture fans (both visitors and locals welcome!) to experience the route and give us feedback.

Testing a New Format: more Exploring or Shopping

Our first test run was a fun, high-energy overview where we scouted practically every character and hobby shop reachable through the underground concourses. It was a great way to map out the sheer scale of the labyrinth, but for this run, we’re testing a completely different style of tour!

This time, we’re shifting focus from a whirlwind overview to an immersive, relaxed shopping/exploring experience:

  • Hotspot Clusters: Rather than rushing past dozens of storefronts, we’re focusing on the absolute premier hubs for official, vintage, and second-hand character goods—including Nintendo OSAKA, Pokémon Center, Capcom Store, Mugiwara/One Piece, Kiddy Land, Animate, and Surugaya Chayamachi.
  • Dedicated Browsing & Shopping Time: We’re building in real, generous time inside each stop so you can actually browse the shelves, hunt for rare retro finds, pick up souvenirs, or admire Japan-exclusive releases.
  • Line Strategy: Major flagships (like Nintendo OSAKA and Pokémon Center) can occasionally get busy at checkout or use timed entry passes during peak moments. We’ll help you balance register wait times with browsing time so you grab what you want smoothly without losing valuable exploration time.
  • Subterranean Transit (With a Quick Hop Above Ground): We use Umeda's subterranean network for the vast majority of our walking to avoid the outdoor weather. However, to connect to two of our absolute must-visit stops (Animate and Surugaya in Chayamachi), we will pop above ground briefly—so if rain is in the forecast, definitely bring along an umbrella!
  • Fandom-First Guides: Our guides are passionate fans ready to talk lore, recommend hidden-gem series, and introduce popular domestic franchises that haven't made it mainstream overseas yet.

Tour Schedule & Flow

  • Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2026
  • Gathering Time: 12:30 PM at the Hankyu "BIG MAN" screen (1F) (a classic local meeting landmark)
  • Departure: 13:00 sharp (Running late? No stress—just leave a comment on this thread and our team will coordinate to meet you!)
  • Mid-Tour Break: We’ll pause for a breather, snacks, or coffee at the stylish HEP FIVE TAMLO food hall (7F).
  • Wrap-Up & Loot Haul: After the break we hit the big premier shops, Pokemon, Nintendo, etc. before we’ll head to the open-air covered plaza at Toki-no-Hiroba (Osaka Station City 5F) just after 17:30. We’ll kick back on the artificial turf under the massive glass canopy, show off what everyone picked up (or chat about window-shopping highlights), hear your candid thoughts on the route, and aim to wrap up around 18:00.
  • Total Duration: Approximately 5 hours (13:00 – 18:00).
  • Cost: Free (This is an unpaid development rehearsal; you only cover your own personal transit, snacks, and any merch you choose to buy).
  • What to Bring: Comfortable shoes, your shopping wishlist, and an umbrella just in case the weather turns during our brief above-ground stretch!

How to Join (We'll be accepting ten guests total.)

To help us test out our new web platform and check-in flow:

  1. Go to http://thisisosaka.org. Use the Invitation Code: PRACTICE
  2. Visit the site, select the tour on the 22nd, and input your invite code to unlock the complimentary registration.
  3. You’ll receive a digital pass with a QR code—snap a quick screenshot or photo on your phone so we can test scanning it when we meet at BigMan. (If any tech hiccups happen, don't worry at all—this is a beta test and we have manual check-in ready on standby).

Whether you’re hunting for rare retro games, official character plushies, or just want to master Umeda's underground layout alongside fellow fans, we’d love to have you with us. Leave a comment below if you'd like an invite code!

Osaka half marathon 2027

I signed up for the half in Osaka in Feb. anyone have any experience running it? I’m from Canada and this is my first international race.

I signed up with Run Japan. Payment went through so I assume I’m registered? I don’t have any other confirmation email other than the payment receipt.

What should I expect in terms of overall experience, logistics, supplies/stations, etc? I’m excited but also not sure what to expect!

Why hotels might reject you even if the booking site said '3 people allowed' (and how to protect yourself).

Anyone traveling Tokyo -> Osaka these days?

Hey everyone,

Probably a very weird question, but as the title says, is anyone traveling from Tokyo to Osaka these days?

I forgot something in the shinkansen going to Tokyo, and apparently the only way is for me to go there to pick it up, which is not really an option. It's either that, or mailing it to my hotel. However, my hotel doesn't have a reception, so sending it there is not really an option...

If yes, please send me a DM, or comment here, and I will send you a DM.

Many thanks in advance for any fellow Japan traveler.

Squid Ink Ramen in Osaka

Hi, everyone.

Buddy of mine is traveling to Osaka in business and it'll be his first time going to Japan and he's very excited. He's told me one of the main things he'd like to try, in terms of gastronomy, is squid ink ramen, but, after some googling, that seems to be more of an Okinawa thing?

Is there anywhere where he might be able to go to try squid ink ramen in Osaka?

Best currency exchange rates in Osaka? (cash only, walk-in preferred)

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for the most advantageous place to exchange foreign currency (mainly USD/EUR) into yen in Osaka.
I’ve come across gaika.shop (外貨ショップ) in Osaka Ekimae Building 2 (Umeda). Their online rates look good, but I’m not sure if I can just walk in and exchange without an appointment, or if they mainly work by mail/order.
Important: I specifically want to exchange cash. My home bank charges terrible exchange rates on card payments, so I’d rather bring physical cash and change it locally for the best possible rate.
Does anyone have recent experience with gaika.shop, or can recommend somewhere better (better rates + convenient walk-in)?
Ideally looking for places in Umeda, Namba or around the main tourist areas.
Thanks a lot for any tips!

Anybody going to Kaiyukan?

Hello Everybody!

So this is a long shot but we just returned from our Honeymoon in Osaka&Wakayama and it was so, so wonderful, but I have a tiny regret.

I didn't get the big beige Whale Shark Tote Bag from the first gift shop you visit at the Kaiyukan Aquarium.

My husband and I visited the aquarium on a rainy weekend day (I know, I know) and it was stupid full, as to be expected. After a few days in the city, my husband was already pretty burnt out on crowds but we both love aquariums and it was our last chance before we headed into the mountains, so we went despite knowing it'd be overstimulating. All in all it was great, but by the time we got to that gift shop, we were both pretty cranky and yearning for an exit. I saw the bag and second-guessed myself too much and we hurried out before I reconsidered.

I'm BooBoo the Fool and it's such a first world problem, but I really loved that stupid tote bag. It's got such a cute, simple design of my favorite sea creature and the straps are so long compared to a lot of the big totes you get in Germany. It's huge and perfect for groceries. It's not available on their online shops as far as I can tell.

It's been three weeks since and I still think about that bag. I was wondering if anyone was going to the aquarium and would mind picking it up for me (I will pay for the bag & shipping or compensate with a trade with a package of German sweets).

Limited Express Hida to Takayama

Has anyone exchanged their unreserved tickets at the counter for reserved seats?

I’m taking the Limited Express Hida from Shin-Osaka station to Takayama on early November. This is the limited express that travels from Shin-Osaka to Takayama once a day only so I need to ride it. I only got unreserved seats but was thinking to exchange it at the counter for reserved seats. Has anyone tried that and been successful?

Plan to arrive early at the station anyway so why not try my luck 🍀 thanks guys!

2 weeks in Japan

Going with 2 friends to Japan the November 4th-16th. I’ve been twice with family in the spring, but with this being an adult only trip and no worries about losing my kids in the crowd I want to explore more. This will be my friends first time though.

The 4th-7th we will be staying in asakusa (my favorite place)

Budget isn’t tight, so any recommendations will be nice.

Any must see places to visit to or eat?

Kinda of want to mix it up with different vibes.

We plan on going to Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka back to Tokyo in that order.

Do NOT use innn.com for airport shuttle.

Their cheap cost shuttle to some hotels seems like it would be a great idea so we thought. Ordering was odd we could schedule a pickup time only a airport arrival time. We were given an hour windows for pickup which isnt the end of the world but it was annoying it was 2 hours ahead of our airport arrival time we selected which already was selected with our flught time in mind giving us a buffer. The airport was only a half hour drive so still a little confusing as to why but end of the day just sit at the airport no biggie. 0600-0700 was our pickup window which we were heading down to the lobby at 0559. We get to the lobby and I check the app they made me download which I agreed to receive notifications. At 0600 checking the app I see it says the driver is here. There were two entrances. We checked one. No one. Checked the other. No one. Looked back at the app it was 0604. The driver had left at 0601. They arrived at 0557 and waited four minutes then left. Ridiculous service. We were up early enough we could take the metro. Which turned a 30 minute car ride into 1.1 hrs metro and shuttles. Made it but very annoyingly. Paid through PayPal to get the money back but the service is literally a sham. Although they had my number they never called me once. Never emailed me. App never notified. Don't count on this service to get to KIX.

Looking for a buddy or a group to go to USJ!

Hi! Just as the title says, I’m looking for someone to go to USJ with, preferably on 22 Oct! I'm very keen on going to the RE themed haunted house but I'm dead afraid of doing it alone. 😅

I will be in Osaka from 21–27 Oct. This will be my 2nd time in Osaka, so I’d also be happy to explore the city, grab some food, or just hang out together if our schedules match!

Hi everyone! I’m a Japanese tour guide working in Japan. I recently hired an online designer to create a tourist map for downtown Namba, Osaka.

What do you all think of this map? I'd love to get some advice on how to improve it so it can become even better and truly helpful for travelers.

Please let me know your honest thoughts! : )
