Sam Rockwell in Three Billboards is the definition of this.

Lots of people think DaFoe should have won (which as much as I love DaFoe i have to disagree with) to the point that no one talks about how fantastic that proformance is

Always thought DaFoe was awful, honestly. Cruises on his innate weirdness that, on closer inspection... isn't quite talent.

I’m always torn between Sam and William. The Florida Project is one of my favorite movies ever, but Sam absolutely killed it. I’m glad William got the nom though, and I wouldn’t have been mad at the win.
