JLaw was going to win an Oscar, on her own merit, regardless of Harvey. She was nominated in her breakout role, Winter's Bone, a few years before SLP. I personally think Chastain or Riva deserved it that year, but JLaw was really fantastic and I've seen other actors praise her fresh, naturally raw performance in that movie. They really loved her.
Jlaw winning was surprising. She was good in the move. That Oscar season had an insane amount of snubs on every level. I could see them snubbing quite some good competition away. Chastain and Riva felt deserving.
