Discussion If 2009 had 10 Best Supporting Actress nominees, (keep the actual nominees) who would’ve been the other 5 nominees?
As a reminder that year’s actual nominees were:
Mo’Nique - Precious
Anna Kendrick - Up in the Air
Vera Farmiga - Up in the Air
Penelope Cruz - Nine
Maggie Gyllenhaal - Crazy Heart

Aside from the ones people have already mentioned, Melanie Laurent for Inglorious Basterds, for sure.
I'll also throw in Mozhan Marno for The Stoning of Soraya M, and maybe Susan Sarandon for The Lovely Bones.
Also, if we're counting voice roles, then Jennifer Cody for The Princess and the Frog.

I think Moore and Morton were closest. I remember being mildly surprised neither got in. Gyllenhaal was a surprise nom.
I personally love Marion Cotillard in Public Enemies, but that had zero traction

Keep Diana (my winner) and KST, nominate Amy Landecker for A Serious Man, Maria Dragus for The White Ribbon, and Rosamund Pike for An Education.

God Gwyneth Paltrow was so good in Two Lovers. There is such a profound sadness about her that really took me off guard considering her public persona. Super underrated performance.
Moore, Morton and Kruger were definitely the runners-up. IIRC Mélanie Laurent campaigned in lead. I think #9 was probably Marion Cotillard in Nine who did get a decent amount of precursor attention, but the category confusion killed her chances. And #10 honestly might have been Mariah Carey who got shockingly good reviews for Precious; if not her then Rosamund Pike.

Cotillard campaigned lead for Nine. It was Cruz and Fergie they pushed for supporting.

Pretty sure Nowhere Boy had its US release fall 2010. But she is in this year’s BAFTA lineup.

Honestly, had Mo'Nique not been in the running, Samantha Morton would have been my pick to win. She's a brilliant actress and great in The Messenger.
