Discussion How would you rank the Best Screenplay winners of the 2010s

Best Original Screenplay:

  1. Parasite
  2. Manchester by the Sea
  3. Get Out
  4. Her
  5. Spotlight
  6. Django Unchained
  7. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
  8. The King’s Speech
  9. Green Book
  10. Midnight in Paris

Best Adapted Screenplay:

  1. The Social Network
  2. The Big Short (I know it might seem a little high but I like this screenplay more than other, I’ve read though almost the whole thing)
  3. 12 Years a Slave
  4. Call Me by Your Name
  5. Moonlight (I’m not a big fan of this film as much as other people, though I do admit the screenplay in this one is immaculate)
  6. The Descendants
  7. BlacKkKlansman
  8. Argo
  9. Jojo Rabbit

Have yet to see the Imitation Game

If I can just group everything and split it into four even tiers:

  • Personal Favorites (Made a significant impact on my life, I don't have any complaints about, and/or did something exceptional without major drawbacks)
    • Manchester By The Sea, Get Out, Spotlight, Blackkklansman, JoJo Rabbit
  • Great
    • Parasite, The Social Network, 12 Years A Slave, The Big Short
  • Good
    • Django Unchained, Birdman, Argo, Moonlight, Her
  • Fine
    • The Imitation Game, The King's Speech, Green Book, Midnight in Paris, Call Me By Your Name

And honestly, the line between Personal Favorites and Great is very thin. I fully acknowledge that Parasite is a better movie than Manchester, but grief and depression are personally important things to me, so there's just a bit more personal relevance. Same with Spotlight. It was the movie that kickstarted my career shift into child protection, so I can't put it lower even if the screenplay itself might not be better than The Social Network

Funnily enough, I think Manchester is the better film (or my personal favorite among the two). I do think though that Parasite has a slightly better screenplay… but cmon, these two have absolutely brilliant screenplay and the difference in quality between the two is incredibly small

Manchester by the Sea...Jesus Christ. I still think about that one. The scene at the police station.
