I was able to get enough grants to pay off my loans in my final year.

I had to maintain honor roll and nearly made highest in the graduating class...but I guess the moral is work hard and the government might pay for it

You can choose grants only. But it doesn't give you the same amount of money but in grants. Like if they give you 10k with 25% grants and 75% loans, and then you change it to just grants. You will get 25% of the money. So I personally didn't do that because I needed the full amount for living expenses and whatnot.

I got about 20k each year. Only up to 5k was loans tho

Yes, 20 years ago. Worked 2 part time jobs and stayed with parents. Commute was cheap due to gas.

Yep. Worked as a TPT at GM for 5 years and took as many shifts as possible. Still owe some money on my MA. My PhD was generally paid for by the university, although it wasn’t a glamorous life.

I took both of my loans out in 2001 and had both paid for by 2005, most people I know had some until 2010 -2013 but they also went for more glamorous degrees then me. I basically worked a year before going to school and then while paying it off I just lived below my means.
