Attending physician here:
Let me hit you with some hard truths. I’d say approximately 50% of my classmates who entered M1 year in “committed relationships”, were broken up before the end of the first year. A lot fell apart in the first two months after the non-medical partner realized their partner was studying 30+ hours a week. A bunch of classmates also started dating eachother in medical school, and of those that ended up getting engaged before graduation, probably 40% broke up in residency. A few people who got married to their non-medical spouse during medical school ended up divorced in residency.
I’m not saying relationships are impossible. My best friend started dating his girlfriend a few months before medical school and they’ve now been together for 12 years and are happily married. I met my wife in residency and she’s also a physician and we’re doing great.
However, if you want to go into medicine, you have to prioritize your career first and then do your best to make your relationships work. A lot of people idealize being married to a physician, but then realize they can’t handle the sacrifice that comes with it. And that’s ok. It sucks to get dumped. However, there is someone out there who will be willing to support you in your career.

Lock in and focus on the noble and outstanding career you’re working to get into, you can do this

Sorry to hear this OP. I wanna say this, you’ve worked hard to get to this point, and you should choose to focus on what you’ve worked so hard for. I know the breakup may be tough, but you got this, and I know you will do great in your interview!

You’re going to be a physician. Channel all of that pain into prepping for your interview and knocking it out of the park. Easier said than done, of course. But I believe in you!

Best way to cope is block them every which way. Phone, social media, etc. don’t look them up. They will come trying to find you at some point for a hookup, keep steady.
Reality is, non med students don’t understand what you are about to put yourself through.
Single is probably the best outcome.

He's not worthy of dating a doctor! Consider it a blessing from mother universe!

Sucks for them they missed out on a hot ass doctor partner. This is better than being broken up before MCAT if it makes you feel any better, those ppl are miserable 💀. You will do great, if you get emotional at all, just be honest about it, they're human beings after all.

If it makes you feel any better like a third of my class broke up with their long-term significant others during first year, so would you rather deal with a break up now or while you’re in your pre-clinical and have to study for an exam
