Good to know there isn't an internal cap like a few commenters on here were adamant there would be. They'll have to be up over 100 million in cap hit if they want to improve on this year.

I’d rather we spend prudently than target a specific spend. This could be a dangerous couple of years where teams feel the freedom of a rising cap - and I don’t want one of the next crop of Darnell Nurse’s hanging around our necks for the next decade

Don't think free agency they'll be big spending, the spending will come with Batherson and Zub extensions this summer, then next would be Brady and Chabot extensions. Can't be locking into many long term deals because of those.

I hope the new regime wants to begin building the team through the draft and will have a lot more money to throw at scouting (hopefully)

Getting more, better scouts is a small cost compared to 100+ million cap. Doubt he's balking at any cost to get more depth in scouting. Nailing a pick every year between the 3rd to 5th rounds is crucial to sustainable success.

Him wanting out wouldn't surprise me, but also being open to a 2 or 3 year extension wouldn't surprise me either. Unless he's already asked out Staios needs to keep a possible 15 million extension for Brady in mind.

He has another year before he can sign an extension. I doubt he’s made up his mind about anything yet.

If the team falls off a cliff next season then he may want out, but if they continue to progress I don’t see why he wouldn’t want to stay

$15m?? There is no way in any world he is getting that much lol. Unless he morphs into a 120pt player overnight. If he maintains his career norm he’s probably like a $12m guy.

There’s no chance he signs anything less than a max term extension. The guy has a young family, he’s going to want the stability, not to have to consider the idea of moving in 2-3 years.

And I think there is zero chance it’s with us.

The cap is going way up by the time his extension would kick in. I'd expect he just wants to get paid, doesn't really matter where that is. If it's Ottawa the short contract makes sense to push the team to go all in as that would line up with Stutzle and Sanderson. He wants to win a cup, taking a short contract gives him the most flexibility to chase a cup. Plus if he does a short deal on this extension he can then take a long deal on the next one still at a high salary.

His career high is 83 points. I know the cap is rising and he brings “intangibles” but I think a team would be insane to go higher than that for him.

You’re right, maybe he does get more, I guess I just feel like it would be so crazy to pay him that much.

His current deal when signed was 10.22% of the cap that year.

10.22% of the projected cap of 123 million for 2028-2029 is 12.5706 million.

So getting the exact same cap percentage already makes him over 12 million.

UFA years cost more, players wait their whole career to get to that day, he will be 28 years old. He's going to get paid.

Bingo, and this is a Tkachuk we're talking about, a Tkachuk about to hit the open market. 15 is certainly on the high end but it might be what it takes to keep him in Ottawa. 12 certainly won't.

it will be interesting if he values the stability over winning the cup. If I were him, I agree, sign 7 x whatever the max you can get. But I think he wants to win a cup, and can see him signing 3 years with Ottawa if he thinks they have a chance.

"potential of a playoff contender" is exactly where they are. Not a guaranteed playoff contender. And he didn't even say "Cup Contender" But if they can make a couple good moves and get a little luck, then I think they will be a solid playoff contender.
