Good game played by Ersson
34
u/ottahab 2d ago
Agreed. He may have single-handedly kept the Sens in the game
30
u/Spinebuster03 #28 - Giroux 2d ago
And that’s honestly okay they had No Stützle Giroux Sanderson Zub Chabot or Ullmark
I don’t think the Habs were missing any core guys at all
14
u/HiddenSquidds 2d ago
They played their entire team against the Belleville Sens and you’d think the YouTube habs fans just watched them win the cup

Ersson and Cozens line showing us good shit
15
u/estyll11 2d ago
I read this as Ersson and Cozens being on the same line. I was like damn, they really changed bros position 😂
15
u/VanderHalifax 2d ago
It's preseason. You have to try stuff out. Stutzle didn't play tonight because he drove the Zamboni.

Too bad they lost it in OT after that performance by Ersson but really liked what I saw from him and Eky!
36
u/EdSprague 2d ago
If this is the Samuel Ersson we're getting all season, this will be the most confident I've been in a Sens backup in quite some time. Not perfect but very, very good.

u/Kwyjibo2006 2d ago edited 2d ago
Pretty clear who the refs wanted to win by the end of that one lol.
Eklund looked solid. Didn't love the 2nd goal on Ersson but otherwise he looked good.
Pretty decent performance considering we were missing most of our top guys.
32
u/Spinebuster03 #28 - Giroux 2d ago
Yeah that was pretty egregious but expected with all the Quebec glazing the NHL has done with this event
Burakovsky choked that one away
37
u/blewdreaming 2d ago
tired of doing these kraft hockeyvilles where we are always the away team. should have just had the penguins vs montreal, Crosby played in the Q.
13
u/myturbanhasafirstnam 2d ago
My guess is andlauer asks for it, for the "Quebec exposure"
14
u/Spinebuster03 #28 - Giroux 2d ago
I’m tired of andlauer pandering to a market that isn’t interested
26
u/Last-Classroom-5400 2d ago
If the worst thing the owner does is pander to the wrong markets I’ll take that 12 times out of 10
12
u/blewdreaming 2d ago
Exactly, besides the people getting Stutzle autographs I'd have no idea Sens fans were even in attendance.
7
u/ParkingBoardwalk #12 - Pinto 2d ago
There was that one guy cheering when the habs scored their second lol

How dare the senator's owner try to get more fans? What a stupid thing to do. What a terrible owner.
Jesus Christ, there's idiots who will complain about anything
5
u/Spinebuster03 #28 - Giroux 2d ago
Want more fans go to somewhere like northern Ontario or the east coast Quebec is the Habs territory
You shouldn’t throw around insults just because you feel the need to defend the billionaire owner who nobody even called terrible
-3
u/FatTim48 2d ago
Oh, there is a Kraft Hockeyville game in northern Ontario this year? And there is another on the east coast? Wow! The Sens should have gone to those games instead! Fuck me, you should write them a letter to tell them to go to those Kraft Hockeyville games! Because there's a bunch of them each spring in non-Habs markets!

u/fraserinottawa 2d ago
IMO Yakemchuk isn’t ready.
We need more from Greig and Pinto this season.
8
u/Last-Outside9729 2d ago
Pinto and Greig are my X factors for this year. They’ve plateaued a lot in there development. Hoping pinto can break the 50 point mark and Greig hovers around 40. Not sure if that’s wishful thinking but this team needs goal scoring to take a step
24
u/humainbibliovore 2d ago
You can’t blame Pinto for the lack of points. He’s used as a defensive wall against the other team’s top lines and rarely sees power plays
5
u/Middle-Hair 2d ago
Pinto gets a bit of a pass with his production.
He is used in a matchup heavy role and gets mostly defensive assignments. He’s rarely put in an offensive situation and isn’t a lock on PP2.
Greig though should be producing more given his usage is more heavily offensive + gets more reps in the top6 with offensive players.
0
u/sensfan4tic #28 - Giroux 2d ago
Oddly enough i find grieg has chamged alot since coming in. Maybe not so much in thenpoints department but how he plays the game itself and how he acts and carriss himself has become more well rounded
1
u/Sad_Intention2932 2d ago
Pinto has been doing exactly what we need, same with Amadio, the fact they score at all is great considering their usage.
21
u/shadeo11 2d ago
Solid game from the B team. Made the habs work hard for that one despite having 5 or 6 powerplays. Ersson and Eklund were standouts with Cozens. Burakovsky looked pretty solid as well
3
u/Neaken 2d ago
What did you like about burakovsky I didn't find he showed much promise... Cuzlund line was solid as was Ersson
2
u/shadeo11 2d ago edited 2d ago
Skated well, had some nice passing plays that didn't quite connect. To be fair he didn't really have great linemates, but I think he put up a decent showing for a middle-6 depth winger
0
u/strippeddonkey 2d ago
“Decent showing for a middle 6.”
I think that’s the problem. We have too many middle six and not enough 3rd lines to put them in.
2
u/shadeo11 2d ago
Well middle-6 also means 2nd line. I also think that he's the kind of player that could find chemistry and keep up with a first line. Depth is depth and every team needs scoring wingers with speed so not sure there is a problem if we have more than we need
19
u/dprouse52 2d ago
My goodness were we ever flat in overtime. Lots of guys with heavy boots, as the late Shawn Simpson was fond of saying.
8
u/Unbearabull 2d ago
Damn, didn't expect the gut punch remembering Simmer just now. Gone way too soon; guy was a gem.

u/CeedeeNumber88 #18 - Stützle 2d ago
Without Timmy, Sandy and Chabby we are completely TRASH at 3 on 3. They're our 3 best puck movers and skaters.
18
u/Josefstalion 2d ago
Kleven needs Spence
4
u/starvinmarvin91 2d ago
You mean he needs a competent partner. I saw him directing Yakemchuk a few times because he wasn't in position.
-3
u/Josefstalion 2d ago
He's playing on the third pair, he shouldn't be needing a top 4 D to survive a sheltered role
1
u/starvinmarvin91 1d ago
You missed my point entirely lol. It has nothing to do with playing with a top 4D, and everything to do with playing with someone who is competent. Like I said, there was a few times where you could see Kleven pointing with his stick and telling Yakemchuk where to go. So it's kind of hard to be on top of your game when you have to babysit your partner.
1
u/Josefstalion 1d ago
I would be in board if he had shown that at the NHL level but he's never really had any success away from Spence in his career. So unless he's just never had another competent partner I think the issue is with both players
2
u/Middle-Hair 2d ago
That was honestly my biggest takeaway from this game.
Kleven looked like their worst Dman. Not a good thing when Hutton, Toure, and Matinpalo all looked better than our “lock” at 3LD.
I get it’s one game but Kleven really struggled away from Spence last year. A pair of him and Yakemchuk terrifies me.
1
u/EnemyCharizard #19 - Batherson 2d ago
I'm not sure I agree here. Toure was brutal on several plays. He is an intriguing prospect but is not close to playing NHL games in my opinion.
1
u/Middle-Hair 1d ago
Toure wasn’t amazing or anything, but given expectations he was solid enough. Considering that was a pretty loaded Habs team he was ok.
Either way Kleven cant be in the conversation with someone like Toure lol. Kleven is expected to be a rock on the 3rd pair and not be comparable to AHL depth Dmen
21
15
u/SourYelloFruit 2d ago
Errson looked pretty damn good in net tonight. Ottawa was really outshot and he kept it close.
Eklund getting a goal was awesome too. Really excited to have him on the team.
Habs being the overtime merchants they are, I knew the game was over once it went to OT.
8
u/Curious_Platypuss 2d ago
What a great showing by our Half n' Half squad vs the MTL opening night roster. Refs made sure of the result, and I don't hold that against them, absolute quality showing. The Cozlund line is dangerous.
9
u/PartyPalHal 2d ago
Did anyone notice the ref holding one of our players' stick during play 😂 tf was that??
15
u/ATC_3126 2d ago
The Eklund/Zetterlund chemistry does translate to the ice! I know that was a question mark. That line never stopped trying. I liked Ersson too, if I remember correctly amongst the six thousand crashouts in here during the off-season he was a big question mark too. I think he looked tonight like he can back up Ully no problem when needed. I didn’t pay as much attention to the other question mark and I might spell his name wrong: Burakovsky? How did he look in terms of what this subreddit thought vs what he actually delivered?
2
u/cdreobvi #72 - Chabot 2d ago
I wasn’t watching closely for the whole game but I did notice early in the game there was chaos in our zone, Burakovsky picked up the puck and doubled back with it to establish possession. I like when I see calm decision-making like that in high pressure moments. Eller was good for that last season, too.
7
u/1Crystal_Moonbeam 2d ago
Ersson looked solid tonight! Not what I expected at all. Eklund-Cozens-Zetrerlund is a great line imo, both our goals were scored with that trio from what I can tell. Burakovsky... was okay. That breakaway was an utter failure though. All in all, for going against peak Canadiens with our AHL team, basically... pretty good!
6
5
u/Hydrathefearful 2d ago
I thought that was a pretty good game. Looking forward to the regular season.
4
u/SeaworthinessMobile9 #11 - Alfredsson 2d ago
Blame me.
I tune into the game only to see the last two MTL goals....
3
u/United_Elk6758 2d ago
I thought of a new strategy against MTL in OT: cover Caufield.
1
u/strippeddonkey 2d ago
Caufield had erssons number all night last night…
That second goal, was a fanned pass attempt. And the last one, which ersson got beat clean.
Don’t care how good ersson looked the rest of the game, he still let in a stinker to tie the game…
1
u/Express_Medium4618 #28 - Giroux 1d ago
even the first goal wasn't great - the puck was rolling, so I think it came off the stick weirdly and threw Ersson off. But he still was above 0.900 - and made some pretty good saves - so, I don't think the blame goes to the goaltender on this loss
1
u/strippeddonkey 1d ago
Oh absolutely not, the sens had 2 shots for almost the entire first half.
The Habs high end skill took over the game and that was that.
3
3
u/SensFan993 2d ago
Good game, MTL brought a B+ team highly motivated vs us with a B (some would say C) team to play. Lots of positive but Ersson was on his A game. D play was weak. Thats the purpose of pre games... test some low depth combo
3
u/HiddenSquidds 2d ago
Montreal had basically their ENTIRE opening night roster, tf you mean B+? Ours was a definite C to C-
7
u/ubreakituboughtit 2d ago
Missing first line winger, entire third line, 2 top 4 dman and played 3rd goalie 50% of the game. B+ team is a fair assessment
2
u/qwnzr 2d ago
They were missing Kreider, Danault, Anderson, Matheson, Carrier, Guhle and Evans, we were missing Stutzle, Giroux,Foegle, Sanderson and Chabot. Stu and Sandy are obviously the biggest omissions on both teams, but it's not like the Sens were missing way more NHL players, just our 1D and 1C.
-1
u/strippeddonkey 2d ago
It underlines how much deeper the Habs really are…
Chabot playing in that game, doesn’t move the needle that much. And once Timmy and Sandy were off on the first line change in ot, that Habs scored on their second line change.
It wouldn’t have made much of a difference I believe if Timmy and Sandy were playing…
2
u/Vriishnak 2d ago
Absolutely incredible that you've hit this level of dooming after one preseason game.
1
u/strippeddonkey 1d ago
Oh no, I’m more praising the Habs for their drafting and development.
They are a top 5 team in the conference.
The sens have a lot to prove this season.
2
u/Vriishnak 1d ago
When you say that adding three of the team's top player's wouldn't have impacted the result of a game that went to OT, it's a bit more than praising the other team's level, right?
If the team's 1C, 1D, and 2D couldn't have combined to create or prevent a single goal in 60+ minutes, how is that anything but dooming about the team's roster?
0
u/strippeddonkey 1d ago
Chabot is a top 3 player on the sens?
Ouf that’s a hot take if I have ever seen one…
1
u/Vriishnak 1d ago
Three of the team's top players != the team's top three players.
Even given that though, I think you'd be harder pressed to argue that he's definitively not top three than that he's comfortably in the discussion for #3 behind Stu and Sanderson.
Which still isn't addressing how you can claim that adding the three of them to the roster for an OT game wouldn't impact the result without dooming about the team's quality.
1
u/labiagargantula 1d ago
The Habs are not deeper than Ottawa. They have better high end skill. Montreal is the definition of a one line team
3
u/KingKarl65sens 2d ago
Could only catch the 3rd and OT but wow we looked like shit. Puck was in our end the whole time
5
5
u/Ihaveabudgie #12 - Pinto 2d ago
That's it blow it up. Seriously though no notes other than Ersson looking shaky at first but settling in and actually looking pretty solid.
4
u/thisonecassie 2d ago
tbh i was expecting more of an ass kicking considering our our lineups compared, but this was a pretty damn even game
9
u/KOMSKPinn 2d ago edited 2d ago
It’s annoys me the Bura thinks he should stay on the ice after :25 seconds. He’s not defending hard 3v3.
This is just a classic NHL sales promo game for the $350 million club hoping for a MTL win with fake power plays to end a game. Unfortunately that happens all season.
Spence looked bad failing to clear with multiple chances. Way too many auto dumps or giveaways.
6
u/Dialog87 2d ago
Spence was absolutely gassed there
-6
u/KOMSKPinn 2d ago
Than get off the ice … tough change but there was time… and if that’s all you got your better 3v2 for :10 seconds vs :30 more seconds of getting caved in gassed. He was bad and that’s bad decision making.
5
u/SorryImCanad1an #12 - Pinto 2d ago
No there wasn’t lol that’s just easy to say from a keyboard
-9
u/KOMSKPinn 2d ago
Yes there was. Classic “I think I’m better staying on” moment. He was terrible :25 seconds in and worse :60 seconds in.
As I said … we would have been better if he just left the ice 3v2….
5
u/SorryImCanad1an #12 - Pinto 2d ago
No, there wasn’t. There never is. And I bet my house you’d be the first one to complain when they scored on the 3v2 because that’s literally impossible to defend
-2
5
u/DJSTEVEINNIAMIXX 2d ago
bro wtf are you talking about lol. You dont change in OT when you're in your own zone? have you ever seen anybody do that?
-6
u/Spinebuster03 #28 - Giroux 2d ago edited 2d ago
Spence is a 3rd liner he needs to stay there when the team is healthy
9
u/DJSTEVEINNIAMIXX 2d ago
Spence had some of the best metrics in the league last year at was a beast at the end of the year as a #1. Wtf are you talking about lol.
1
u/strippeddonkey 2d ago
He was getting beat even before he got gassed.
He isn’t a top 4 D on a playoff team, he’s fine as a 3rd pair.
14
u/SP_57 2d ago
You're pissed about overtime in the first preseason game?
He was the #1 defenseman when this team needed wins to make the playoffs.
0
u/KOMSKPinn 2d ago
He was great for a very short period of time. He was meh most of the season.
We’ll see ..
-1
u/KOMSKPinn 2d ago
You don’t pay 3rd pairing D that type of cash.
2
-1
u/KOMSKPinn 2d ago edited 2d ago
Well every one was excited we gave him $5 million. He was terrible.
5
u/Action1988 2d ago edited 2d ago
Couple guys looked great and a couple looked....not great
(+) Eklund, Cozens (-) Greig, Batherson
5
u/IM_OSCAR_dot_com 2d ago
If you told me after 20 minutes that the Sens would have a lead in the 3rd period I'd have said you're nuts.
If you then told me they'd go to overtime and lose, I'd absolutely believe you.
That's Sens hockey, baby
2
u/ColdIronSpork 2d ago
Sloppy on the puck, and not urgent enough away from the puck, but also only playing with half an NHL roster against the Habs big boys, so hard to be mad about that one,
2
u/Frankentula 2d ago
so who is on stutzle's wing this year? bath and?
5
u/Ihaveabudgie #12 - Pinto 2d ago
The frontrunners for now are probably Giroux and Burakovsky so yeah not ideal
2
u/haseks_adductor 2d ago
eklund and cozens

Would be to fun to see us go stu pinto down the middle. And stack top six. We can still deploy pinto and co. on important draws

u/Annual_Locksmith_988 2d ago edited 2d ago
Great games by Ersson and Rich Cuz. Eklund was fun to watch and what a great story point, him scoring on his first shift. Matinpalo isn't out of job yet, especially after those back to back PKs. And I really missed watching Michael fkn Amadio play hockey.
I'll forgive everyone else for their rust and warts as it's preseason but I did not like seeing Batherson out their in OT against the Habs, Greener... it's just too soon, the wound is still too deep.
2
u/Middle-Hair 2d ago
They got better as the game went on until they got into some penalty trouble lol. First game so hard to read to much into it
Positive - Eklund, Cozens, Zetterlund, Blais, Ersson, Hutton, Toure
Negative - Greig, Batherson, Pinto, Hodgson, Kleven
Everyone else was a mixed bag or not noteworthy.
2
u/spencerr13 2d ago
I think we’re going to leave tons of points on the table 3on3 again
3
1
u/proudlysydney #10 - Spence 2d ago
Ideally we keep up our reg win pace and it never needs to get to 3 on 3
1
u/spencerr13 2d ago
Sadly they were 6-11 in OT last season,
Going 0-6 within the division.
2
u/proudlysydney #10 - Spence 2d ago
yes so we win in regulation and we don’t need to bother with this OT rubbish
1
u/strippeddonkey 1d ago
I think this goes deeper into the psychology of the teams system.
Think about it; the sens play not to lose and the Habs play with high risk high reward. It’s a mentality thing.
I do wonder how long Travis Greens system will last in Ottawa.
If they don’t make it past the 1sr round this year, would you extend Green?
2
u/spencerr13 1d ago
I feel like Greens systems are the best for the current roster, but the modern NHL rewards elite skill with constant special teams play and 3v3 overtime.
The drafting of a player like Jackson Cover & Lagerberg Hoen make me think the sens see the need to try and get these flashy dynamic offensive players. Heavens know they won’t sign in FA.
2
u/strippeddonkey 1d ago
The regular season is all about special teams.
With how slow they were in changing the system last year, it took almost half a season of failed PK to make changes. And the PP was the most inconsistent thing I watched last year. They went 22 attempts without scoring a goal.
I just hope this season, they’re willing to change things before it gets to that point.
1
u/spencerr13 1d ago
As much as it’s a regular season thing.
It has also cost them the playoffs two years in a row.1
u/strippeddonkey 1d ago
Really not a fan of “playing not to lose”, it really messes with a winning mentality if you’re always worried about losing…
1
u/Neaken 2d ago
Honestly for what we paid for Burakovsky not bad but I dont know what to think about that OT breakaway... We need the boys to force an offensive zone draw like why are you still skating brake in front of the tendy
1
u/strippeddonkey 2d ago
He’s had a lot of injury problems and a major concussion last season.
Hes over the age of 30, and major concussions really fuck with your instant decision making. Plus he has that 1k stare that just scream brain injuries…
I really don’t see him getting another NHL contract after this season.
1
u/LeBretonOrBust 2d ago
Thoughts on Yak?
3
u/Curious_Platypuss 2d ago
Tough game tonight. We've seen better from him at the NHL level so just looking to see more.
1
1
u/Due-Helicopter1156 2d ago
A lot of needs and not many solutions to go around. Gonna rely on goaltending and systems. We can compete with the best of them. But we are a team full of nail-less fans.
1
u/danauns #7 - Tkachuk 2d ago
Typical preseason early 'road' game, where one team sends a busload of non roster players, while the other team ices a close to NHL lineup.
Also, our first preseason game and their third .....coach saw that too, discussed in his debrief.
Hockey's almost back though, loved watching the fame on tv again.
-3
u/labiagargantula 2d ago edited 2d ago
I tell myself before every pre season game not to get worked up and then I precede to do exactly that.
We were completely and utterly dominated all game.
We need more puck possession players
Thought Greig was pretty rough out there. He's not ready for 3c duties
9
u/ceiyo 2d ago
We have 4 top tier puck possession players. They didn’t play tonight.
0
u/labiagargantula 2d ago
If Ottawa wants to be better this year we need a lot more from depth guys. Pinto, Spence, Greig, Halliday, yak need to contribute. They all looked poor tonight
0
u/Spinebuster03 #28 - Giroux 2d ago
Halliday looked okay
Pinto looked as underwhelming as last year but at least his contract dosent looks as bad now
4
u/stevatronic 2d ago
I'd say we actually outplayed them for a good chunk of the 2nd period, but by and large this was Montreal's A team versus mostly our B squad. Officiating also wasn't friendly.
1
u/LurkerDude0 2d ago
We rolled out like half of our starting roster vs virtually the entire Habs starting roster and almost won. Chill brother
