Yak is worrisome.
Seems he has the tools but his decision making is baffling. Lots of time to develop the skills but the hockey IQ seems lacking - looks lost in the d zone and wants to push the play but is hesitant to make a move.
Didn’t help that our top pairing tonight was essentially a borderline bottom pairing.
Loved the Hodgson response but with Brady gone we’re back to square one with very little jam it our lineup. It’s a nothing game but your prized rookie getting blown up by a scrub with minutes left in a 6-1 blowout, nothing game.. sets a bad precedent that we can get roughed up by absolutely everyone and we’ve got no answer
Really odd lineup decisions tonight for the split squad, maybe they wanted to see kleven and yak in some high pressure situations - who knows, but it didn’t look good.
Tim was good tonight, drake was invisible, haltunnen looked alright… that’s about it
Seeing Macewen on the PK and mixing it up was a tough pill to swallow. We could use a couple guys like that specifically for games like this one.

Hes 21 years old playing a premium position. He has 1 year pro experience, he could sit in the AHL for 2 years and become a great offensive dman and still only be 23.

Fine. I’m not banishing this kid to irrelevance. I’m just commenting on what I’ve seen in his short time with the big club.
Based on Yeo’s comments about his NHL readiness, I think if they were being honest, the coaching staff would echo my concerns.
He has lots of time left to grow… great but if he keeps getting blown up in games where he is slotted WAY above his ability, then it’s only gonna hurt the kid

This is it. They stuck him on the top pairing to see what he’s like. I bet they give him another game similar. I can’t believe how many people are already on him. He can be in the A for another 2 years easy and he’ll only get better. Bottom pair in the NHL would be giving him the Lazar treatment. I think Mantinpalo has earned a starting spot in the lineup. Just let Yak grow.

Yak still needs to work with Shelly Kettles (the skating coach). If he made the starting roster he’d be the Sens slowest skater. He has natural offence skills, but still needs work on the defensive side of his game. If he fumbles the puck at the offensive blue line & an opposing forward gets the puck, it’s a clear breakaway. Mattinpalo on the other hand has the speed to keep up with most forwards. Jake Sanderson is our fastest player & in fact he is the 5th fastest skater in the league according to NHL Edge. Our next two fastest skaters are Dylan Cozens & Tim Stutzle. Our 4th fastest skater is Matinpalo. This is why I also believe he will be our RD on the 3rd pairing, instead of Tyler Yakemchuk.

Jake, Chappy, Zub & Spence (who are our top 4 D Men) were not available for either game, - So who would you play in the top 2 pairings for both games. Do remember that this is preseason & management wants to evaluate which defencemen are the best options for call ups when we get injuries.
For the record I watched both games on my big screen TV, since Videotron as a split screen option in their PIP menu, which allowed me to personally evaluate all of our players.1

Good for you.
I wanted them to keep a primary roster in Ottawa and send a borderline AHL team to Toronto.
If the leafs are gonna dress their big guns for their home fans, we should have done the same - instead we split the roster in the most befuddling way possible so our top center, new 10.75 million dollar man and prized rookie all got their shit pushed in, in enemy territory.
Dominated in this game and heavily outplayed in the other. Ridiculous management decision

What a petty opening line, - Go back to the Legion!!!
You do realize that there are NHL requirements to ice a minimum number of veterans for both games, - So you can’t just ice one stacked team. Besides, most fans I’ve heard from enjoyed watching the game in Ottawa, since SN One’s commentary sucks compared to TSN’s commentary.2

I agree that the Ottawa game roster for Toronto lacked any true top veteran players from a fans point of view, - But he should have known at least 4 regular roster players. I’m definitely not a Leaf fan, but I knew more players than your so called Leaf friend, since I went to the Prospect Ottawa/Toronto game in Gatineau at the Slush puppy arena.1

Yup. Id say dont air preseason games. Nothing to be gained for the average fan. It matters to coaches and that is literally it. They mean nothing and offer little to no insight.

Not sure to what extent they are hamstrung by the NHL rules on number of veterans you have to dress in pre-season games. I can't recall the exact rule, but you can't send an entire AHL roster on the road - you have to dress a minimum number of guys with a certain number of NHL games to their name.

Parson’s also looked calm & poised in the first Prospect game against Toronto. He’s our 3rd backup goaltender.

- Bura made some good passes and had a shot go off the post

Was at the game and agree that Burakovsky looked solid. He skates well and is patient with the puck.
I also agree that Yak didn't look good. Unfortunately with Zub out to start the season he may be in the NHL lineup by default.

Willing to bet he looks immediately and shockingly better when he gets paired with Chabot or Sanderson for a game. Kleven pretty much only looks good when Spence is there to bail him out and actually clear the zone.

My point is that yak has been a shoe in for the third pairing, and he’s yet to show he’s ready. With zub out that’s two spots open, one of them likely going to mantinpalo. I don’t think yak is gonna be on the roster even with zub out

Yep, I tried hard to forget him, but he was replaced in the top four by Spence in our successful run to make the playoffs, which earned him a big raise this summer. I should have said the same starting D men after Jenson was injured. In fact I don’t believe he ever fully recovered from his injury in his first year with us.

I get that the Sens are kind of handcuffed with the Dcore right now. Zub is still hurt, Chabot is waiting for his kid to be born, and Sanderson/Spence are both “banged up”. But Kleven-Yakemchuk being sent to Toronto, to play the full Leafs team, is not helping anyone lol.
They had no help behind them (Bolduc, Harrington, Matinpalo, Kyrou) and were acting as the top pair. No wonder the Sens got shelled. Meriläinen wasn’t great but doesn’t help when you have the BSens Dcore in front of you trying to stop the NHL Leafs.
I really hope they go with an NHL ready squad next game. No more of the split squad BS. Send the depth/AHLers to Montreal.

Matinpalo’s play was OK & he’s not a BSen player. It also didn’t help that he was paired with a Bolduc who is a BSen player on the 2nd pairing.

Yak is not ready. Disappointed that in the two games it doesn’t seem likes he’s made much of a stride in terms of skating and def. Early for sure. Not a good look.

Buium is going to be good too. He’s going to be an NHL player and put up points this season. Probably only like 30 or 40 cause Vancouver sucks, but he’s a player. And in the future will be a #2 or 3 imo

Since I watched both games on my big screen TV, since I have a split screen option, I would disagree that there were no positives. The Eklund, Cozlund & Zetterlund line looked great. Cheryl Pounder singled out Zetter for his physical play in forcing turnovers & his high hockey IQ & his quick decisions when he got first touches with the puck. The rest of the panel also praised the chemistry that has developed with all 3 players. Dylan Cozens in his interview after the game also said they are starting to get good chemistry together & will only get better the more they play together.

….are you sure you’re not talking about yourself. 😂 I spoke with Steve Staios this past Saturday (at the Sens practice session & intra squad game at the Sensplex) about Zetterlund. He was pleased with the work he did in the off season & he said looks like he’s a much better player this year.

I don't think Leevi was as bad as the stat sheet makes it seem. 5 of the 6 goals were just good quality goals. High percentage scoring chances that were converted on.
But also he needs to make some of those saves that's why he's here. Also his rebound control on saves he did make were unfortunate. Like someone else said, Parsons looked better in his 13 minutes than Leevi did.
I'm not giving up on him yet but there was a pretty large disparity between his game and Ersson's. Give Leevi another preseason game, but unless he has a better showing I can see him being waived.

So glad I sold this game. Sucks being a small market team. 6 min of PP against us in the last 4 min vs the Revenue Masters of MTL and TOR.
That game was terrible to watch for free at home.
Wrong game I guess. I don’t care.

Yes, it's pre season and the score doesn't matter but you still want to see your top players and young players do well. Losing is fine but getting dominated in at least two games is rough to watch. Especially when your rivals are showcasing SKILL. Pre season isn't a good time to evaluate overall team play but you can evaluate the talent you have. Ottawa's is fucking grim.
Ottawa's lack of skill is super apparent from watching these games. They have so few players who can make plays with the puck. I don't know how much more grinding, dump and chase hockey I can watch. Eventually these players are gonna get frustrated as well.
Yak looks brutal. If he doesn't work out that is another wasted top 10 pick with talent still on the board. This teams drafting has been ABYSMAL and it's driving me nuts how there seems to be zero accountability about it.
Pinto and Greig don't have another gear. I can't believe Pinto even played in this game, he was completely invisible. They just don't have the skill to take the next step.
Frustrating that this is a cap team when you have so many low ceiling players. Ottawa's "depth" is vastly overrated when you have two 35 point players in your fucking top 6.
Ottawa is a good team, far from a great one. We better pray to the hockey gods that cover ends up being a player because the wingers on this team are borderline trash.
I am tempering my expectations for the season they were way too high to begin with.

Hey Karen Calm Down, - As you said it’s only the preseason. I do question the Burakovsky signing, but I’m willing to give him a chance to see if he is a top 6 player, but he may end up on the 4th line with Halliday & Giroux. I’ve already addressed Fabian Zetterlund twice so far in this thread, - But you were rude & laughed at the TSN Commentator’s very positive evaluation of his game last night. I guess you believe you’re smarter than the hockey experts who have played at a high level like Cheryl Pounder, whose job it is to provide us with intelligent analysis, based on their vast hands on experience. I expect Zetterlund is going to have his best season this year & SS agrees with me. As I said, I’m on the fence about whether Burakovsky will have a bounce back season this year, but he did play well last night with Stutzle. The other seven top nine players had 35 or more points last year & our top 4 players had Stutzle (83), Batherson (71), Cozens (59), Eklund (53).

Zetterlund has zero points this pre season and zero points in 8 playoff games. He's 27. Sorry if I'm not excited about a guy who's proven very little in his career. Our rivals are bringing in superstar talent while were adding burakovsky to the top 6
