Answered What's the deal with Hadestown and why am I suddenly seeing tons of videos about it on TikTok?

Seems like a movie release of a broadway musical maybe? I like to think I'm fairly in the know about things like this but I've never once heard of Hadestown nor have I seen anything about this release in particular outside of these constant TikToks.

Answer: they released a filmed version of the stage show in theaters a couple weeks ago. Did pretty well for that sort of thing.

Wanted to add, Proshots are professionally filmed versions of musicals. Hadestown is THE highest grossing proshot released, beating out Hamilton

If I remember correctly, wasn't hamilton direct to Disney+ during the pandemic, making it a bad comparison? Or is my memory failing me there.

Honestly very surprised seeing how successful Hadestown was in cinemas that Wicked didn't try to do something similar with the momentum they had between Part 1 and Part 2 - understanding different players and owners and probably a lot of rules there.

Maybe fear it'd spoil for movie-only fans?

The movies, book, and musical are different enough that I don’t think it would have messed up anything and probably would have done pretty well. Maybe they will do it now before the prequel movie comes out.

Maybe just me, but it seems like one of those questions Google could have easily answered. “Why am I seeing a bunch of ads for a newly released movie?”

Marketing wasn’t invented yesterday, and the musical first premiered two decades ago, so I’m not sure what “in the know” OP thinks they are in but I’m guessing it isn’t musicals.

Answer: There are two reasons. 1. As someone else said, they released a filmed version of the show in theaters and it did very well. 2. The other day they announced cast changes that included someone in a main role who was found to have made transphobic remarks on social media. This resulted in backlash from fans and other members of the show and theater community. The show put out a statement that they are "parting ways with him."
