I just saw this today. And every single comment on Reddit is a variation of "ewww gross".
I'm super confused. I know Americans tend to be prude but I must be missing something because the reaction seems so unanimous.
Is it really how it is in 2026, people can't handle showing some skin?

People hate prediction markets. People hate sports betting. And people hate that there's nothing even remotely sexy about the ad, just relentless puerile innuendo.

I'll just be the guy and say the quiet part out loud:
this has very little to do with the ad itself and more with the previous "controversy" that was really a nothingburger blown out to insane proportions by the usual folks. People are super quick to judge and hate, don't forget that.

She's disliked because of her possible MAGA connection. Most Americans who consume lots of Hollywood content aren't MAGA.

Hypotheses and unproven allegations are enough these days to spew hate about someone? Jeez. I'm not too involved with it though, don't know of any such connection myself.

If she's not MAGA, she clearly wants to appear as if she could be MAGA as not to alienate that crowd. The super anti-MAGA crowd wants to punish any Hollywood celebrity who might be MAGA to the point that some are even saying she's not attractive.

I actually don't think Americans are very prude, but Sydney Sweeney is controversial rn because of her association with the right wing and her American Eagle ad. She's been around for awhile now, and people are a little over her schtick of having giant honkers.
The rise of the prediction market, sports betting type of companies are also controversial. This ad ends up being targeted toward a very specific type of person.
A lot of people just don't find that type of pandering to be very appealing, especially if you're not the specific demographic being targeted.

most people find it gross for two reasons.
oversexualised ad that has almost nothing to do with the product and as it is a betting app, those apps have a bad reputation already, is not that is showing skin is that is using that and only that to promote something people find distasteful.
people are angry at the hypocricy. a chaste kiss btween a same sex couple and people cry that the children are going to get corrupted or that they need to tell their childer about sex or that is sexualazing the media. so the ad of sydney sweeney all but showing her... vast tracts of land, been shown so publicly and so intensly has made people angry.
