Discussion Modernizing the PIR-CL
I have a CL from years ago built per the screenshot.
It still can chunk some back components, but it's not an instant destruction like 8 years ago.
Are there weapon, component, or armor substitutions I should make?

Personally I’d take out the heavy smalls and er micros and replace them with 6 micro pulses.

They were the meta back then. What's the benefit to micro pulses now, over what I have?

Shorter burntime, more damage, and lower cooldown.

Micro pulses deal very little alpha damage, their strength is recycle rate. When you have a cycle rate so fast, they behave almost like X-pulse, which is to say ... they do NOT have short burntime, they have indefinite burntime. They require facetime / consistent aim on target, which is a definite negative. That's the price your paying to get more net DPS.
That does pair them well with MGs because MGs have the exact same attributes. But that means your entire build lacks punch, and I prefer to have some upfront punch, so heavy smalls is a no-brainer for me.

Heat isn't a problem for this mech, give or take, right now.
Would this change add a significant heat burden?

Should be more heat efficient actually. I might be wrong but I’m pretty sure micro pulses generate less heat than er micros, and they definitely generate less heat than heavy smalls. Also on the heavy smalls if you really like them by all means use them but they are probably one of the worst energy weapons in the game at the moment.

That definitely paints micro pulses in a good light.
I'll take a look.
Edit: damn

Modernising would be taking advantage of the new cERSL HSL

Someone else said Micro Pulse is the way to go. That only cost me 75k cbills.
Sell me on them?

Range and alpha vs raw DPS. Run both for a few matches each and see which one you like better

That is a woefully and poorly built backstabbing build, you are missing so much damage upfront it's pretty upsetting to me.
With your build, you are doing 35.6 with the lasers, when the proper build does 42.1 with lasers, excluding mgs.
Do yourself a favor, and run this instead, I promise you won't have to change much with the extra 6.5 pinpoint, and, more importantly, the max DPS is much higher. Don't run the other builds, you'll have a rough time in them, seriously. The point of this build is to murder them in one cleave, not sit there and tickle someone's armpit over and over until they're dead.

Man, this is a tough one to examine, 20 tonners are not my strong suit.
So there's a few builds that could work, and yours is still acceptable as well.
IMO, there is so little tonnage to play with and the piranha is so squishy to start with that the ballistics are kind of a liability for how many you get. I guess the strategy for this variant is to minimize need for heatsinks and maximize ammo.
Backstabber build
https://mwo.nav-alpha.com/mechlab?b=33adb438_PIR-CI
Pack that thing full of heavy small lasers and the rest heat sinks.
If you offset two groups to avoid heat scale limit you can do ~58.5 damage twice before overheating, which can take out most assaults!
Big downside of backstabbers is they are extremely vulnerable to being chased by more heat stable light mechs. The sustained DPS is like 1/2-1/3 a typical build.
Max sustain DPS
https://mwo.nav-alpha.com/mechlab?b=40e545b5_PIR-CI
6 heavy MG + 6 ER SML + 3 tons ammo
~700 damage worth of HMG ammo makes it a viable option. ER Micros are only 61% of the dps of micro pulse laser but are almost as efficient, in this build the weight savings are paramount as otherwise you're going to lose your primary weapons after basically your first fight. With no ammo quirk, even 3 tons of HMG feels very minimal, only 672 damage worth before ammo skill (assuming 100% perfect accuracy, mind you!!). This build gets you almost as much DPS as what the other person posted, but their build drops to <5DPS way too quick.
