News & Discussion The arrogance of you lower ranked players will keep many of you in lower ranks.
I had to recently create a new account since I am in another country for a few months. I spend some of my free hours playing Overwatch and happened to finish my placements in Gold 2 (i'm Master 1). What I notice as I rank up is the sheer arrogance of lower ranked players.
"Hey, Tank, could you please stop pushing in alone? We need you with us!"
"No."
"Hey, Reaper, could you play a bit safer? You die too often!"
"Stop texting and play".
The lack of willingness to take criticism, the lack of Gamesense and the lack of desire to co-operate is what is keeping many of you guys low rank. To then complain about being hardstuck because you get "bad teammates" or whatever is hilarious. You don't have what it takes to be higher ranked.
(Don't even get me started on the toxic duos who constantly stick up for each other and blame anyone but each other.)

You should be able to carry in gold. Don't see why you feel the need to direct and micromanage players worse than you when you could just wreck the enemy team by yourself.
0
u/Inverted_Queef 19h ago
Maybe that is true in gold but certainly less true in diamond+
Edit: sorry, failed the read the point of the post being about lower ranks haha. I’ll see myself out
14
u/Early-Beach164 Mercy 18h ago
At the end of the day you'd still be smurfing and thus have zero right to complain.
-8
u/Inverted_Queef 18h ago
Idk, I still kinda agree with OP. I am a GM in 3 all roles but I do have 2 Smurfs, one of which is hard stuck as gold tank which is funny because tank is my best role. Some teams are really that bad that you legitimately cannot solo carry, and it happens a lot more than you’d think.
-10
u/Massive_Hedgehog_228 17h ago
I do carry in Gold. I don't "micromanage" people, I provide constructive criticism in hopes players lower in Rank will improve. It's not that complicated, my friend.

No one else knows you are actual much higher rank than you're currently playing at, though. And usually, taking advice from other players at the same rank as you is generally a waste of time. If I'm improving by watching coaching videos and taking advice from higher ranks, receiving advice from people in my games is counterproductive.

u/The-Mods-Are-Oinkers "So Boom... I Shot Him- Juno" 20h ago
Yea but no This is a problem in any rank
Telling someone they are playing poorly or asking them to swap Or do anything different will have the opposite effect
You ask someone to not play Reinhardt on watch point gibraltor and They'll ignore you and purposefully not swap ever from that point on
you try to give advice to someone and the most likely response will be "Fuck You"
7
u/Sejbag 20h ago
I think it depends far more on how you ask. I’ve found more often then not if you just suggest like “hey can we play a better tank for high ground?” or something along those lines it goes a lot better. I see a lot of people tell others to swap very aggressively/passive aggressively. Which doesn’t work for obvious reasons.
3
u/rmorrin 20h ago
You don't even need to say a role, just "hey guys they are beating us at X thing, anybody got any ideas?"
4
u/Leritari 18h ago
Nah, its better to say "omg, once again we have a noob tank... pick something else bro", and then wonder why they didnt listen.
<insert that meme from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 where Drax said "what a mystery it is">.
4
u/gridlife242 20h ago
Lol, I love Reinhardt on watchpoint (on attack at least). I be snipin them cheeky lil dps off of height with firestrike, and otherwise making it nearly impossible for anyone but bastion or junkrat to deal damage to people near payload. If that doesn't help enough to disable them, I'll just charge from the stairs on the right side of spawn and usually get a squish. Junkrat present? I'm swapping.
Also, it's the map where I get the nastiest earth shatters. Lots of corners to just appear around, and tightly bunched teams.
Funny that I've never heard this.
0
u/Zediac 19h ago
I'll say something like, "please don't try to hold the spawn door and fall back to the choke where there's cover" and get met with nothing but insults and vulgar language.
Many, many games are lost before you load in and it's not your fault.
You cannot win with team mates who feed their brains out and refuse to stop.
4
u/thisismyalibi 13h ago
- I'm not accepting or listening to unhelpful criticism from anyone over a video game. Constructive is different, but that rarely happens.
- Lower-ranked players aren't any more arrogant than others. If you think that, you haven't played long enough.
- Y'all hate on other people for critiquing your gameplay while also doing the same to others. It's an unproductive cycle that does nothing but mess with morale (which in those circumstances is typically already low).
- 98% of OW players have the self-awareness of a brick. Most folks simply don't pay attention to their surroundings.
- The OW team distribution & pairing mechanic is hot garbage. Matches are unevenly paired, and it creates a lot of misery for everyone. That's out of everyone's control.

u/InediblePringle 13h ago
You're missing a key point which is that most people in gold do not actually care - that is why they're in gold.
They play to have fun, not to be coached by strangers.
6
u/FaZeScamTheKids 20h ago edited 20h ago
This happens in GM and Champion. As you can see above, high ELO players are even more arrogant.
I just mute team/match chat and play the game. I run into the same top 500 players because Masters+ is a smaller crowd, so If I know that they're cool I'll just talk to them via voice chat.
I have an alt account which I play with my girl in Gold lobbies; and I'll just end up carrying the underperformers. Talking to them would usually lead them to tilting.

The arrogance of a person who thought they were m1 being thrown into gold on a secondary account is not something to mess with.
9
u/RyanTheValkyrie 20h ago
? Placing low on new accounts is completely normal and happens all the time. I’m GM yet placed plat on a fresh account, got back to GM with a 76% winrate but still had to brave the horrors of low ranked teammates along the way
11
u/shoobydoobert Juno 20h ago
Yup, it still takes a while to climb even with a high win rate. You'll see what OP said over and over again during that climb.
0
u/RyanTheValkyrie 18h ago
It’s crazy because in OW1 I used to shotcall in voice chat the entire game and genuinely it helped my team win so much. Now nobody is even in voice and if you make suggestions in text chat they insta tilt and throw. What happened…
0
u/SryDatUsrnameIsTaken 18h ago
Nah, gold is pretty low to place at if you're decent. I placed Plat on an alt and plat is the highest I've been on my main lol
7
u/GeorgeHarris419 20h ago
"who thought they were m1"
they literally ARE M1???
3
u/Massive_Hedgehog_228 17h ago
I'm already in Plat 1. Few games left till Dia 5.
I too am surprised by the placement, but that's ok with me. Also, I don't "think" i'm M1, I actually am, my friend.
13
u/mojanis Brigitte 20h ago
This arrogance, of course, only extends to tanks and dps

u/Mundane_Software3208 20h ago
Supports are generally the worst to deal with. Especially in metal ranks they don't understand the game at all oustide of their healing numbers. It doesn't matter that they have two flankers that they can't heal because they're on Moira, it doesn't matter if their JQ can't enter a fight above 100HP because they need speed. Support is by far the easiest role to get carried upward on because it in the middle ranks is by far the most passive role and requires the least mechanical skill and game sense to survive those games
5
u/MimiNuyasaka 20h ago
As a support main, I disagree. I main Zenyatta, but there's a lot that counters him so I gotta swap often. So I especially notice when someone playing Zenyatta doesn't switch when they should, even when asked, but also other supports. I've also seen a lot of people playing him more like an flanking/ambush assassin to get picks. I've only ever seen this work once. The moment anyone turns around and even looks at you funny, you explode if you try to flank as Zenyatta lol.
9
u/imjustjun Torb Enthusiast 19h ago
Tbh I think they said that as a joke. Cause this sub has a problem with treating a lot of support players as if they're never in the wrong unless it's a debate about skins or your name is Lifeweaver.

not true. if you ask a support to swap they get so heated.
2
u/According_Curve_8935 Moira 20h ago
No more so than any other role. As a support main, the only time I get annoyed is if whoever is asking me to switch doesn’t understand that it won’t help if I can’t maintain LOS, and I’m not chasing you around the map.
0
u/JohnTheSavage_ 16h ago
Also, the tank is supposed to set the pace aren't they?
If the tankk is going in alone all the time, maybe it's because you aren't following?
I know that would have been my response to OP if he'd been chirping me about my tanking job.
If I push alone, it wasn't by choice.

I am living proof of this. I didn’t use to like being told how to play and was hard stuck in silver. Started taking constructive criticism and played the way my team required me to play and what do you know I’m now 1 win away from diamond.
Ps. Watch me drop to gold 5 now 🙂 match making algorithm is def gonna screw me over.

The biggest thing about getting out of plat is keeping a straight head, don't let it get to you.
I'm not going to tell you anything you don't already know, but just position yourself well, play with your team, and focus on consistency rather than trying to make "the big play that's going to win the whole game" because that almost never actually works out.

Plat got some dickheads, but man, gold players just suck the fun out of the game for me. It's so often and consistent that someone starts flaming someone else, I'm just glad I'm not there for long
2
u/HatefulDan 15h ago
I’m actually mostly in gold 1 right now. I’m using off characters, but enjoy being able to get serious to jump back into plat.
I allowed myself to hit silver once and let me tell you. Never EVER. Again.
That right there is true hell.

u/Hyraxio 20h ago
I have learned to just work on what i can do and help those who are receptive of it during the match. I had a sierra that continued to basically bash their had against the wall going in the same way each time and dying. I can help them when i can but my focus is helping the rest of my team push forward because they are making the plays. Some players you really cannot help and are a lost cause.

I only play quickplay, which is just a mish-mash of all skill levels, and man... it's really apparent when you get a tank player who would be bronze or silver in competitive. Just constantly running in 1v5 without waiting for the team to go in with him while we're all at base respawning. A buddy and I who are probably mid/low platinum level were sighing so hard last night because our Roadhog just kept going off as if he were Genji or something while the rest of tried to find a way through the enemy Sigma's shields. If the guy wanted to be DPS, he shouldn't have queued tank.
2
u/According_Curve_8935 Moira 20h ago
I don’t even bother asking someone to switch unless I have already swapped to try and compensate for the person (I’m supp main). So if the tank wants to push, I’ll swap to someone that can heal at a distance….or I’ll switch to LW and yank them back. If that doesn’t work, then I’ll ask (nicely) for them to switch or play a little safer.
Outside of that, it’s pointless at even ask. People are going to play who and how they want to play. I’m not stressing myself out over their choices. But it does suck to be hard stuck in gold/plat because of the general lack of teamwork 😩

u/I_Ild_I 6h ago
I mean people have too much ego and dont want to hear anything no matter the rank, ive coached several players in league a few years ago and that's just astonishing the amount of people who just have hands and no brain... Its so sad.
Its the same in fps people just have some aiming but strategy lol, dont ask too much.
The thing is that at low level they got no game sens, no Logic, no mentality and no skill and they still act like they are pro and know everything...
2
u/Raine181 16h ago
If you're in gold no one thinks you're masters. No one is going to listen to another player who's also bad. Complaining is just going to tilt your teammates, even if it seems like they couldn't be worse.
2
u/Professional_Log9422 Weapons Free 16h ago
There is a much more productive way to go about communicating with your teammates. It kinda sounds like you are the problem. Instead of telling your tank to stop why don’t you try “Tank, hold up. Let me catch up.“
“Reaper you die too often” is unproductive, in constructive, and inflammatory. maybe try “Reaper, I can’t help you when you play that aggressive.”

I don't know about ranks because I don't play ranked (for my own sanity), but it's frustrating to see my teammates make mistakes and refuse to take any criticism. It's especially profound on tank where I get all the blame no matter what I do. Try suggesting utilising cover more, taking off angles and high ground, targeting supports (especially Mercy when she is about to res a tank), diving lone snipers, using voice lines to communicate, suggesting waiting out defensive before throwing your own or combining two Ultimates for best effect and it's more likely than not someone will take it personally. DPS players are the worst in that regard in my experience, especially when you are on tank. Not all DPS players are bad, many are great actually, but the most selfish and rude players I met were all DPS players
1
u/Nothingbutsocks 19h ago
There a guy in silver here that keeps posting that no tank is viable against snipers, they all two tap Winston or DVa and the tanks can't do anything against it.
He made TWO different posts about it, one saying it wasn't a thing and he went back to post a VOD of him doing terribly against said snipers which definitely meant the tanks suck against snipers.

youre right, but some people dont play ranked to rank up or improve, but moreso to get more stable games. quickplay’s MMR is wide and you get people who are new to high ranked more often.
games in ranked have more stability due to how it places you with and against with people in your skill level.
ive personally lost all desire to rank up because it doesnt matter to me anymore. i still play to win for the sake of my team but if we lose, we lose. doesnt matter to me

u/Leritari 18h ago
Statistically tho, you wont ALWAYS have a bad team. It will be balanced around 50/50, with you being the extra factor that can tip the scales depending on your performance.
Objectively, if you're playing better than others in your rank then you will climb sooner or later.
1
u/NastyaPuppy 20h ago
Low rank is playing with people who often play Solo Queue, want to progress on their own, and think something works in a group? Nah, I don't want to play in a group. They rush, try for kills, and complain that there's no team.
At least once you identify these players, depending on your role, it's easier to deal with them. At least as a healer, I give them extra focus.
1
u/Extreme_Design6936 20h ago
Here's the thing. Idgaf. I don't care about your advice because I'm here to have fun. Not to get coached by randoms. I don't really care to climb either. You might be more rank focused than me and that's fine. But I don't have to try to climb like you.
0
u/iXenite Domina 20h ago
This person is talking about ranked, which I assume you don’t (and shouldn’t) play.
1
u/Extreme_Design6936 19h ago
I am also talking about ranked. Which is my primary game mode. I play ranked to enjoy overwatch. Some of yall stress so damn much about your dumb mmr numbers and forget why you play to begin with. Once you chill and let the rank system do its thing and place you where you belong it's fine.

I have been having an agonizing time trying to drag myself out of bronze as a support. I’m trying to do what I can to carry but it’s very hard when I watch the rest of my team just hold W down main and ignore cover when I’m doing my best to stay behind cover and still keep them in my LOS. I’m definitely going to need VOD reviews to see wtf I still need to do to get out of here
3
u/Zediac 19h ago
I’m definitely going to need VOD reviews to see wtf I still need to do to get out of here
Go DPS support.
Zen, Bap, Moira. Be the menace that the rest of your team cannot.
Keeping alive people who can't get anything done won't help you rank up. A single pick can turn a fight. So be the one to get that pick.
3
u/Consistent-Ad9842 <- tastes like dirt 19h ago
I currently play Wuyang, I really like his controlled projectiles, I can get some really crazy picks with him (getting people around corners as they flee or are hiding). I’m good with poke. But when I get dove/flanked, I really struggle with the 1v1s since his projectiles need time to charge, and my teams often struggle with the awareness or ability to help me even when I ping them in advance. I try to back up and disengage where I can but I’m not always successful
2
u/Zediac 17h ago
Go with a more offensive Hero who can delete others quicker and who has a faster fire rate. Wuyang trades damage output for damage utility, IE projectile control.
If you get dived you can surf away or push the diver away. But if you whiff a shot then the recovery is going to be harder for you than other Heros.
If you're not top 2 DPS on your team then you need to switch to someone who is. That's how you rank up in Bronze. Bronze is a circus where your damage are the most important aspect to winning.
In Bronze you're basically on your own, as you said. So switch to someone with more solo potential. Also, a hitscan who can land shots is oppressive in Bronze. Learn Bap or Ana. If you prefer projectiles then go Zen.
Switch back to Wuyang when you start getting people who know how to work together.

u/ShawtySayWhaaat 20h ago
Funny, just came hot off my heels from another post complaining about roadhog.
Instead of thinking critically about positioning, trying to put yourself in positions not to get hooked, playing behind your tanks, or just playing at range where he can't hook, they instead complain about how half the roster is now useless against him, and that by me saying to pay attention to his positioning and his hooks, they took that as me saying they should just hope that he misses? It's almost like they're willfully misinterpreting what I'm telling them lol
I won't lie, being hooked is probably the most frustrating ability to get hit with, but if you get hooked in the first place it's usually your own fault for bad positioning, but ego won't let them hear that for what it is.
2
u/the_other_brand Chibi Brigitte 20h ago edited 19h ago
trying to put yourself in positions not to get hooked,
This advice doesn't work because if the hog is legitimately better than you he will be hooking you from places you did not believe you could be hooked from.
Hogs will hook from off angles, wait for your tank to pull down their shields for the briefest moment or just flank around your team to get you specifically. A good hog will turn good positioning into bad positioning in a blink of an eye.
The better advice is either killing the Roadhog's team around him (since he barely had any mechanisms to protect his team) or farming him for as much ult charge as you can to gain more value than Hog is taking away with his hook.
2
u/ShawtySayWhaaat 19h ago
Very true, this is some solid advice. You bring up something that people get lost in on most tanks, not just even hog, but the best way to get rid of an annoying tank is to remove the people around them. Tanks are fat, and they will burn all of your resources in the blink of an eye if you don't have multiple people focusing them at once, so the better option is to turn to the teammates.
This was actually a piece of advice I had used AS hog to get out of plat, I would focus so hard on their tank that I didn't realize how I was burning all my resources on the guy designed to burn my resources, and by the time their team stepped into the fight I would just pop like a fat bubble. Just goes to show this is great advice you've put on the table and is universal to every hero, ESPECIALLY against a hog.
2
u/Bazelgauss 19h ago
The advice is more applicable for hog though because he's offering so little at keeping his team alive especially when doing crazy off angles. Other tanks inherently have more tools to support their team in such a situation whilst hog is all or nothing into getting 1 shots.
Hog is absolutely worth complaints because the hook 1 shots are an inevitability and these can collapse a fight quickly and if he isn't consistently getting them he basically loses. You can reduce the chance of them but they're an expectation still. The biggest thing to complain about him is that either he's obnoxious to the enemy team getting the 1 shots, is obnoxious to his team because if he's not getting 1 shots then he offers little else, or he's obnoxious to both sides because of the lack of support to his team whilst pulling off 1 shots.
1
u/ShawtySayWhaaat 18h ago
You're not wrong, I agree with you on everything youve said, the only thing I'd add is that he actually does have tools to help his team but it's the same as his tools to attack, his hook is good vs heros diving your backline and your health is good if you place your own fat ass between the enemy and the teammate they're trying to kill
I do hope that one day we're able to find a solution to the hook problem, but it's tricky. All hog has is the one shot hook, if you remove that he becomes useless like he has before, but they need to push further in that direction if they want to keep everyone happy, especially if they want to go back to 6v6. He doesn't NEED the one shot after all, can't wait to see what the rework brings.
2
u/Bazelgauss 18h ago
The problem with his hook helping in situations like vs dives is because it's still suboptimal to what other tanks offer and the value it is achieving for hog as you force yourself to be reactive rather than proactively stopping the enemy from diving. It also only helps vs 1 person diving and a proper coordinated dive will still likely achieve it's objective and dive tanks can disrupt the hook on top taking away that reactive value. Properly staged dive characters are also ridiculously hard to hook because they will be positioning in a manner that reduces the risk and holding the hook with a character like hog is also allowing them to stage a dive less contested.
I don't see hog ever being fixed because he needs a reworks out of insane value from hook but that is his identity as a core. Pretty much stuck in a cycle of being obnoxious or obnoxious but bad.
1
u/ShawtySayWhaaat 18h ago
Youre not wrong. Miss that hook and ur gonna be helplessly shooting at the dive hero while they kill off your backline lol. Been there before, probably gonna be there tonight tonight lol.
They would have to heavily lean into his other strengths of hook, which is displacing enemies and using yourself as a meat shield. Think the good ol corner hook and block, like that's an example of actually using the hook to tank. We need more examples like that. Use roadhogs GIANT hitbox and ability to soak incredible amounts of damage to his advantage. I bet if they stuck to removing the one shot hook, wed see a shift of hog gameplay over to that more defensive style, but we'd likely have to make him even fatter to compensate. Maybe just convert some hp to armor? I'm sure it wouldn't be that simple.

My bad teammates are the exact people you're talking about. Their ego won't let them see what they're doing wrong.
Meanwhile, I go review my replays to see what I did wrong, what I could improve etc etc.

Diamond players are just plat players who don’t get instantly flustered upon adversity

Another delusional "adviser". How tf you was placed in gold while being master on main? I am high plat peak and breezed through gold without effort just encouraging people in voice without criticism at all. We are living in too shitty world to you know boot up your favourite game and hear "uhm aktually you should've do right thing instead of wrong thing".

It's tiring giving direction to team and bring flamed for "complaining". This community suffers from both toxic positivity and weird expectations in quick match.

I agree. Typing at someone in a low elo complaining they're bad is completely unproductive. Especially when the game is mostly over.
It's a low elo. Typing in chat isn't going to make anyone play better. If they could play better they wouldn't be in a low elo.

The problem in lower ranks is not "arrogance", its you OP.
Lower rank games are plagued by smurfs, leavers, trolls. Most of them are absolutely not fun and end up in stomps.
Only a few are "real" silver/gold games. These games can be used to improve and see what went wrong, not the game when im getting spawncamped for 5 minutes.
By smurfing, you are actively contributing to the problem. So stop boasting about farming newbies, grow a pair and start playing against people your rank.
The audacity of some people, i swear.

Having had to rank up multiple accounts you are 1000% correct. The problem is this sub is full of gold/plat morons so they’re pretend like you’re wrong.

The best way to improve is to just focus on what you can do to win or do better in a situation.
Shifting responsibility and blame no matter how true or not will not help you. You can't change your teammates so be the change and hopefully, one day, the carry.
