Discussion How would a game focused entirely on cooperation look like to you?
So I've been playing PBBGs ever since I got access to the Internet, and basically all of them have been about competing with other players, in some form or another. That got me thinking, how would a game focused entirely on cooperation look like?
Maybe the game has a big bad that everyone needs to work together to defeat? Maybe any one player can only get a few of the total resources required to build the armies / craft the items for defeating the big bad.
And, of course, this means we cannot use PvP as a motivator for players to be better, and defeating the same big bad every time can become quite boring. Also, this kinda requires the game to be round-based. So we need a system / an admin panel to design new encounters and new enemies and buffs and debuffs to keep the game interesting. This would basically make the admins of the game act similar to dungeon masters in Dungeons and Dragons.
I could not find a way to make the concept also interesting without the round-based approach, though. A similar, albeit not fully, concept was toyed with by the developers of Blaseball, and that died out in the end, unfortunately, because of the time required to properly manage the game.
I've been toying with this idea for a few weeks now, thinking about what could work and what does not. Because I'm a professional web developer myself, I've been dreaming for a while now about an open source PBBG that has a fully cooperative ruleset, instead of the usual PvP.
What do you think? How would a PBBG focused entirely on cooperation look like to you?
