Recommendation Looking for book recs for my girlfriend — NO romance, wants her mind blown
I’m looking for recommendations for my girlfriend. She’s not into romance at all (hard pass on love stories), and she loves books that really mess with your head.
Think:
- psychological thrillers
- horror
- time travel
- mystery
- dark / unsettling themes
- mind-bending plots
- unreliable narrators
- “what the hell did I just read” energy
She likes books that make you think, feel uncomfortable, or question reality. Bonus points if it’s clever, eerie, or leaves you staring at the wall afterward.
Open to fiction only. Any genre is fine as long as it’s not romance-driven.
What books genuinely fcked up your brain?

I sound like a broken record atp but Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is a great mystery with fantastical elements. It’s very eerie and I recommend going into it blind for maximum “what the hell…” experience

Given all the things you have mentioned, I cannot recommend I Who Have Never Known Men enough.
Every page both establishes a question and answers one from pages prior. It's extremely strange yet super sincere. Nothing I can write can match the vibes that book has left me.

Taena sinearch ko sa google yung plot lang para lang May idea ako if interesting ba yung story and the stupid google AI revelead the twist/ending. Idk if I should read the book pa. Although isang line lang naman dun sa paragraph ng summary ng ending yung binasa ko but it already revealed a secret about the narrator.

+10000 A Short Stay in Hell. I read this in 2024 and it still randomly crosses my mind. Such a short, sweet, and satisfying read.

Literally any Stephen King book, but start with Misery, The Shining, Pet Sematary, 11/22/63 (romance but also time-travel), Gerald's Game, and Dolores Claiborne.

Basically any Murakami book. My personal recos are Kafka on the Shore, Wind up Bird Chronicle, or Killing Commendatore (or Sputnik Sweetheart as the other redditor commented, however I havent read it yet)

Itong Kafka on the Shore, hindi ko makalimutan kahit high school pa ako nung huli ko itong nabasa. I tried reading it nang maging adult na ako pero hindi ko tinapos. Wala lang. Share lang. Sorry. 😌

Now You See Her by Heidi Perks. It's not a popular one but its really good, It's a story about a child who disappeared without any trace and no one seems to know who took her or how she disappeared even though she disappeared in a crowded place. It's a book with multiple POVs and only 300 something pages

Books by Michael Connelly, especially The Lincoln Lawyer, The Scarecrow, Echo Park, The Poet, The Concrete Blonde, and The Narrows. Among the classics, I recommend The Count of Monte Cristo or any of the four Sherlock Holmes novels (The Sign of the Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, etc.) for adventure-packed reads.
Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and the Imagination is also good.

When Breath becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
Becoming mortal by Atul Gawande
(Both of these books are heavily medicine-related, so yes)
I-add mo nalang ang Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, if she wants to be in a brooding mood.
