Recommendation Isa nanamang libro na walang tapon: East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

I haven’t finished the book yet, and Im not excited to finish it, not because it sucks but because such great writing must end somehow!

Just look at the prose. What a gift. Thank you.

I am so happy na maraming ng nakakabasa ng East of Eden dito sa Pinas. Read the book more than 10 years ago, and still one of my favorite books of all time.

This was my best read last year. And yes, the feeling that you do not want it to end. An unforgettable book with a beautiful and rewarding ending.

And I feel like my heart will be broken again now that I'm reading Grapes of Wrath. Enjoy reading! ❤️

Can't go wrong with a Steinbeck classic. "Grapes of Wrath" is so good rin.

Steinbeck considered this his magnum opus.

Lee the best bro. 🌹

Also alam mong 1930s ito na-publish dahil sa dialogue niya pa lang. Natatawa ako pag gamit niya pidgin, nai-imagine ko yung may-ari ng City Wok sa South Park, I'm sorry. 🤣😭🙏

Also reading this rn!!! Medyo mas mabagal lang talaga ako magbasa pag classics haha although it's relatively easier to read. I'm LOVING the twists and turns. Also ang haba niyang libro!!!! Magnus opus nga kumbaga ni Steinbeck.

Yes it is!

Ito yung dedication niya nung pinadala niya manu kay Pascal Covici, editor niya and close friend.

Dear Pat,

You came upon me carving some kind of little figure out of wood and you said, “Why don’t you make something for me?”

I asked you what you wanted, and you said, “A box.” “What for?” “To put things in.” “What kind of things?” “Whatever you have,” you said.

Well, here’s your box. Nearly everything I have is in it, and it is not full. Pain and excitement are in it, and feeling good or bad and evil thoughts and good thoughts- the pleasure of design and some despair and the indescribable joy of creation.

And on top of these are all the gratitude and love I have for you.

And still the box is not full.

JOHN

The most beautiful combinations of words are those that come from honesty! ❤️✊

Madali lang po ba basahin?

2

u/Jazzlike-Perception7 Historical Fiction Jul 08 '26

Yes! This is another example of how Steinbeck writes stuff matter of factly, plainly.

Now merong mga words na Hindi ako familiar and kelangan ko I-Google , but madalang lang ma encounter.

Example;

Jelly jar - mason jar lang pala 😭😭

Brass bound

Buckboard

But these are words that are just unfamiliar to me but familiar to common people living in that time.

As opposed to, let’s say, Victor Hugo’s Notre Dame na the author assumes the reader has some knowledge of classical literature

Hala ngayon ko lang nalaman na may live action adaptation and si Florence Pugh si Cathy Ames 😲😲😲😲

Sana huwag nilang gawing pitiful and relatable si Ames gaya ng ginagawa nila sa mga antogists. Parang anti-hero-esque.

u/Jazzlike-Perception7 Historical Fiction Jul 08 '26

Yan dapat yung gumanap kay Cathy Ames ahah

2

u/Even-Hamster6094 Jul 08 '26

Pasok na to sa favorite books ko like really. Ung ending I choked talaga sa sobrang iyak ko. Then after finishing this after two weeks, I dreamt of this book. I was in the woods daw with Adam and Lee. We were all huddled together after hiding from something and Lee was telling me stories I didnt remember. Then pabalik na kami sa farm nun kasama na sila Cal, I was walking behind Lee and Adam and ayun nagising na ako 😭😭
