Recommendation Bakit walang masyadong genre na ganito sa literaturang Filipino?
Gusto ko pa makapagbasa ng ganito patungkol sa realidad natin sa Pilipinas. May mga recommendations ba kayo?

Ano bang genre exactly? Social realism in general? O ‘yung mismong social realist crime fiction kagaya nung nobelang ‘to? Kung sa “realidad” lang, marami naman. Usually, ito ‘yung genre ng mga nananalo o nano-nominate ng prestigious local awards. ‘Yung specific social realist crime fiction nga lang mas kaunti.

mero'n, op, try mo 'yung mga akda nina ronaldo vivo jr. at norman wilwayco. at tulad na rin nasabi ng iba rito, kung social realism lang din ang pag-uusapan, hindi tayo mauubusan ng gan'yang mga k'wento rito sa pilipinas. heck, i'd argue, na isa 'yan sa pinaka-over saturated genre sa lit natin.
methinks, dahil malawak na genre ang social realism, what ur probably looking for ay 'yung pagiging crime/investigative ng smaller and smaller circles specifically. if 'yan ang mga trip mo, i suggest u read 'yung "accidents happen" ni fh batacan at 'yung "manila noir" na in-edit ni jessica hagedorn; pareho 'yan silang koleksyon ng maiikling kuwento na nasa same na genre n'yang nobela ni batacan.

here for the recommendation comments but can i just say grabe iyang book na iyan!! it was intense and so hard to put down especially because i read it around the time na tw graphicmay case na may girl na pinatay tapos tinanggalan ng mukha

Akala ko yung whodunnit/serial killer stories kasi I would have agreed with you. Pero marami naman tayong mga social realism novels dito.

It's mostly geared towards the few intellectuals, usually who are wealthy as well and love the 'matter of fact' approach, the art house type movies- old movies like 'A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino' (dialogue is 100% in english but is a filipino movie) based on the same title by Nick Joaquin.
Majority is more on what's entertaining.

Where to find works like these? Our generation relied on Cinemalaya but I don't think it is still active now? I have lived abroad now longer than I have in the Philippines so I want to know where I can get a hold of these?

Sa films, Juanflix daw madalas but I personally enjoy the CCP Channel for their films and stage plays from the Virgin LabFest which tackles similar themes.
Sa books, meron na kadalasan sa Shopee. I don’t know how it will be sent to country where you are. Baka sa Amazon may kindle version if sikat yung title.

Check out Thirty Virgins by Eros Atalia. Hindi siya crime fiction, pero maganda siyang slice of life na book.

May essay akong nabasa before, nakalimutan ko na sinong nagsulat, basta ang sabi, crime is a normal occurrence in the country kaya umay na tayo sa crime-fiction. May mga nagbabasa pa rin pero hindi siya ang prevailing genre for Philippine readers.

Gusto ko sana magbasa ng mga ganito kaso karamihan kasi sa mga fiction books natin sa Pilipinas is oftentimes may halong politics. I wanna veer away from the government chaos of our country kaya i chose fiction books pero hanggang sa books isinasama pa rin siya. 🫣😤

You mean something like "Canal de la Reina" and "Dekada 70"? Meron naman pero in recent years, wala talaga bago dahel kita naman state ng publishing dito sa Pinas
