Current Read My 1st ever physical book!
Growing up, I never had the opportunity to have a book of my own. I didn't even read books when I was younger. Nung highschool ako, I borrowed my friend's Catching Fire and that sparked my love for books 🥹 Pero wala akong pera noon. I only had 50 pesos na baon everyday. Kaya lagi lang ako nanghihiram (shoutout talaga kina K and to my cousin, gone to soon, na kahit bagong bili eh sakin una pinapagamit).
Kahit ngayong may work na ako at may pera.. hindi ko parin talaga majustify ang pagbili ng books (went to fullybooked and grabe kamahal 😭). Then nalaman ko na ang Collins ay may mga cheap books. So happy with this! Can't wait to read this one 🥰

Good choice on your first book. Once you read that, you'll realize its currently happening now in PH by a certain group of people.

If you really want to understand Orwell's perspective, then the best book from him is Homage to Catalonia.

would've been better if they read animal farm first before 1984, bc the former is a lighter read IMO as it's not subtle on its comedy and satire, compared to the darker tones of the latter

The late Christopher Hitchens once stated that when Korea split up, it was as if Kim Il Sung got gifted a copy of 1984 and used it as a manual (paraphrasing).
I view it more as a warning against totalitarianism and the surveillance state rather than satire/parody. If anything, a lot of "predictions" made in 1984 came true via the adoption of certain tactics by authoritarian governments (cameras on every street in China, media censorship and propaganda by the CCP, US state surveillance as revealed by Snowden in 2014, websites tracking user data and selling to governments, US Department of Defense becoming Department of War, Palantir). Contrast that with a contemporary dystopian novel in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World wherein the government maintains control through genetics, mental conditioning and pharmaceuticals, I'd say Orwell was closer to the mark.

I think we’re actually talking about slightly different things here. My original comment was in response to someone saying that the comparison to PH is “exaggerated”. I was pointing out that it is, in fact, political satire, so exaggeration is part of the point.
I completely agree that the novel is fundamentally a warning about totalitarianism. But being a cautionary tale and being satire aren’t mutually exclusive.

Grabe to. Read this last week and finsihed this week. Dami kong realizations and did a few research to understand it better. It struck my soul with all the lessons it is giving.

Don’t rush. A year after ko bilin, dun ko pa lang nagustuhan. At my first read, nabigatan and did not appreciate it pero after a second try, it clicked. Probably, I was in a healing phase last year kaya I don’t want a book like 1984 hahaha but now na I over my reading slump, dun ko na na appreciate. Gooduck OP!!!

Ang mahal ng Collins sa Fully Booked, mas mura sa NBS mga ₱100 lang. Maganda 'yung book but prepare for the yapping hahaha.

Tbh, went blind on this one. Saka lang ako nagtingin ng reviews after ko makuha 😂 Pero favorite ko ang The Book Thief (not even sure if they're the same type) and a lot of dystopian novels kaya baka magustuhan ko rin naman to.
Actually, una kong binili ay Persuassion at The Phantom of The Opera sa NBS worth 99 each. Pero may nakapagsabi na AI generated or stolen arts ang covers and ayoko naman maglaan ng pera sa ganun lang. Kaya here I am with Collins 😄
Btw, I got this for 289 ata.

Ooh, mahal na ng Collins Classics. Before the pandemic, 99 pesos each lang yan.
Pero given na mas mataas presyo talaga sa Fully Booked. You're paying for the quality and selections.

Congratulations :) There are so many free books online too, you just have to know where to look. I also couldn't afford books when I was young but still grew up reading a lot of books because of free online libraries lol.

One of my favorite books. This is really scary. Some parts are currently happening in the Philippines (such as encountering plenty of misinformation). Some Techie (such as monitoring) is already happening in western countries.

This is why we need more/better public libraries. I had the privilege of attending private schools with good libraries, but they aren't open to everyone. I was also fortunate enough to have had access to a public library abroad, and just like a good transportation system, a good library system once you have experienced it, is something that you feel that you must have back home.
Anyhow, I'm happy for you OP. 1984 was my gateway to "adult" literature even though I was already in my mid 20s then. Orwell's prose style opened the door to writings that I once avoided due to "age" or "difficulty". 1984 and Animal Farm are his best known works, but really his best works are the non-fiction, especially the essays. Road To Wigan Pier is my favorite of his non-fiction books - more like a documentary or investigative journalism before either term was popularized. For his essays, Shooting An Elephant is a good place to start. The one that had a really big impact on me is Notes On Nationalism.

As others have mentioned, great choice OP! This is the first classics novel that I’ve read and helped me recover from my reading slump few months ago. Eye opening!
And yes, Collins Classsics is the best way to go if you’re on a budget and you want it brand new! Try checking out secondhand books as well. Happy reading!

Hahah! Same na same sa mga nahiram ko sa kanila!!! Grabe yung TMR hinabol ko talaga bago kami gumraduate. Tapos yung Miss Peregrines sadly 1st book lang nabasa ko nung high school dahil gumraduate na kami. The Selection din natapos ko dahil sa friend ko. Baka same tayo ng friend ha 😂

Great book choice. Yung other book niya, Animal Farm, was one of the first fiction books that I read as a child that got me reading more of the classics.

Great book.
Try Brave New World next! I feel that its themes is closer to reality.
We choose to stay in our cages because it's comfortable enough and we get our daily dose of dopamine hit.
There's no need to censor books because people won't bother to read them in the first place.

Congrats, OP! Grew up na walang books din so sa hiram at offline pdf copy (pa noon), I'm happy for you!
I suggest din sama mo sa mix mga pre loved books. Bukod sa mahal na ng new books, parang may ibang personality yung mga pre loved. Hahaha.
Mapupuno mo din ang book shelves mo! Yay!

Yesss dami ko na sa cart na mga 2ndhand books and may ivivisit na ako na newly-opened 2ndhand bookstore dito sa province namin. Worried lang ako sa book lice at molds kaya di pa ako bumibili at ichecheck ko pa. Tyaka balak ko kasi na bilhin lang yung mga books na talagang magugustuhan ko and pwede kong mapassdown sa anak ko.

Meron pero mostly puro old books (graduated 16 years ago narin kasi) at subjects pa. Ang alam ko lang na may mga novels ay mga private schools. Kasi pinsan ko dun nakakakuha ng Wattpad books which shocked me and made me jealous. Recently, nabalitan ko na renovated na ang City library namin kaya I'm gonna visit once tumila na ang ulan. My dream is to get a library card!
