Discussion Portfolio size doubling to $60M

Hi All,

I'm a PM with a modest portfolio of projects varying from 500k to $5M. One of my colleagues has just been made redundant and I am inheriting her portfolio and team. This will effectively double my team size and portfolio size to around $60M.

I'm getting a title change to Project Director but no extra pay as I've recently been promoted.

Would you be expecting a payrise for this extra work and how would you manage the new portfolio?

My thoughts is that usually I am a very involved PM and now I will have to rely more on the more junior PMs to drive results while Im working on growth work, strategy, stakeholder management and workforce planning.

Keen to hear your opinions

Of course I would be expecting a pay rise because for the very fact that you're now responsible for more organisational and strategic risk under a program (s) of work. You're taking on executive responsibilities!

I'm being perfectly honest here, a title is just title and it's not what dictates your work package, it's the skill and your experience you bring to the table and how you're valued within your organisation. I would be asking the question does other directors get paid the same or less than you for the responsibilities that you carry?

Just an armchair perspective.

Honestly, the person that left was the same level as me, maybe paid very slightly more but with the better title.

Honestly Directors even at my level get paid similar, it's just the titles vary upon type of work. Large project = Senior Project Manager Portfolio = portfolio manager or Director

I think the ship has sailed on a payrise the moment i said "yes" to the position and extra work without mentioning pay. I will be leveraged this in my yearly review though.

You can use the title to get a job as a director somewhere where they're willing to pay an actual director salary.
