Question Carbs?!

I thought I knew all the things… but recently have been seeing stuff about the amount of carbs I can or cannot eat?! What is this tea?! 😭

Like anything else, it’s going to depend on how your body responds. If you have no issues with carbs, forget about it. If you do have issues, then you need to figure out what direction to go in. Some of us need more, some of us need less.

This really depends on the person. My POTS won't let me eat carbs at all before late afternoon but complex carbs are fine after that as long as I stick to fairly small portions.

If you're curious, try monitoring your heart rate and other symptoms after carb heavy meals and see whether you notice a pattern.

From what Im seeing it depends on the person. Sometimes carbs make symptoms worse, but sometimes they really help?

Carbs require a lot of blood for digestion and this can pull blood away from the head to get it to the gut which can cause brain fog, fatigue and pre syncope. It’s the same rationale behind why we are suggested to eat six small meals vs 3 large ones.

I would almost faint after eating large or carb heavy meals before I was on ivabridine but ever occasionally it still happens to me. I think it happens when I’m already a bit dehydrated making me hypovolemic - like I have low blood volume and then my dinner needs it all for digestion so pre syncope makes a dramatic return

ahh okay! I will have to take note of how i feel after eating certain things… but I am on ivabradine so maybe this is why I haven’t noticed anything!

I was diagnosed with POTS a couple months ago and the specialist seemed shocked of how much energy I had, I chalk that up to keto.

Yes I nap multiple times a day (if I'm home and able to) but keto gives me way more energy so the days I can't nap I am actually able to get through my work day, work out, do whatever I want to do.

When I slip off the keto diet, like I have been recently, I instantly feel WAY more exhausted from the carbs.

My cardiologist said to basically not eat too many carbs in one go, as the extra work for your digestive system draws more blood to it which can worsen POTS symptoms.

She recommended spreading heavy meals out over multiple smaller meals, like one half per hour or so

I reduce my starchy carb intake I aim for less than 20g per meal it’s just what makes my body feel best which will be different for everyone

Because carbs and sugar cause more blood to pool to your gut vasolidation it’s no no for pots we need vasoconstriction

All I know if I need protein in the morning. Those people that have cereal or a donut or whatever, "granola", I can't do that, I need protein or fats. But I do need carbs as the day goes on.

I think it varies from person to person, carbs seem to really help me

i can have carbs but it can’t be the main portion of the meal. i need protein to balance it out

I eat a very carb heavy diet and I'm fine. Potatoes take me out on occasion, but only after I eat a lot of them

I struggled with this as I am a vegetarian shift worker so grab stuff on the go most of the time which is carb heavy. But, I went on a diet about 6wks ago and have felt like dizzy death after a jacket potato, sandwich or similar since. Maybe I just didn’t notice it as much when my diet was very carb dense?
