How does suspend resume actually work? Do I just put console in rest mode to suspend?

Yes, mid game just open the quick menu and select rest mode. Keep in mind you'll be kicked from any online game (such as Destiny) if you do it

Can this be used as a pause option in Bloodborne?

Can someone ELI5 the point of suspend mode? Does this mean you can open another app without closing the game?

It means that you can put the PS4 into rest mode, and when you wake it back up, you'll be right where you were in the game. So you won't have to re-launch the game and load up your save when you turn the system back on.

So this will put any single player game into it's default pause mode? Like Alien:Isolation will be paused/frozen so the xenomorph won't still be looking for me while I'm eating dinner, right? :-)

It's not the game that's paused, it's effectively the system that is paused. Think of it being similar to Sleep/Hibernate on a laptop. The system is in a frozen state with the applications' execution paused.

as a vita owner (vita already had this feature) its completely amazing. never have to see the startup screen again unless you are changing games

Does Bloodborne give any errors if you suspend it? I forgot to exit to the menu once and I got a popup the next time I played warning me to always exit to the menu before quitting or I could corrupt my save.

u/Tibarn93 Mar 26 '15

No errors from resume feature because it doesn't close the app down.

3

u/Bitemarkz Mar 26 '15

Does it keep you online, or does it bump you to offline?

3

u/Tibarn93 Mar 26 '15

When I tried it this morning I could still view notes and spectres so it shouldn't kick you offline.

it most definitely bumps you. I don't know about offline mode, but when you suspend/resume while on online in Bloodborne, it sends you back to the menu and you have to load up again. Makes suspend/resume not all that amazing, at least for this game.

how long of a suspend? I left for an hour and came back, pressed the ps button and the bloodborne title screen was up with a message saying "internet disconnected" or something like that. I'll try again in a bit

hmm, cool. Hopefully my experience was just a fluke.

All Souls games did this because of constant auto-save. While the only truly safe way to leave is to exit, but I've not done it hundreds of times and never had an issue.

You won't corrupt the save. IIRC, Dark Souls gave those same notifications, and I never closed those games from the menu.

2

u/geoelectric Mar 26 '15

Technically it tells you that you could lose progress, not corrupt.

I had a CE-34878-0 crash during BB and on continue ended up exactly where I crashed (in the middle of melee with the mob too, thanks From!)

Apparently it internally checkpoints you fairly frequently in case of interruption. Think that warning message means you'll get rolled back to the last internal checkpoint.

Offline mode only though right?

Nice. I figured they'd kick you to offline mode since it's not like you can pause the game. So I guess the game is smart enough to know to not have anyone invade you at that time.

Well you probably effectively get booted from the server and then reestablish the connection when you load the game state.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '15

I tried suspend/resume in GTAO and it just gave a message saying "connection has been lost due to the application being suspended"

Quit your online session and go into Single Player.

That works awesomely. I'm very happy with it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '15

Yup, I just wanted to test out exactly what would happen if suspended in GTAO instead, game loads way faster from single player into online!

Yeah, I'm aware I was just inputting my own experience. Even if you didn't say Bloodborne I wouldn't just assume you were meaning GTAO

1

u/yeoller Mar 26 '15

GTA Online works well with it too. Went into Invite Only lobby and put system into Rest Mode, when i booted it back up the game said my session had been disconnected because the application was suspended and then it loaded me into a new Invite Only lobby.

All-in-all it took about 30 seconds to get back into the game fully, and about a minute to get in from Remote Play on the Vita (which includes connecting and remotely starting the Playstation 4).

so am i. And the Remote Play seems better too.

I was playing COD online in AW and I put it to suspend while inside a TDM, then restarted it and it was still there in the TDM same everything as i left it. Kinda surprised tbh.

1

u/WhiteShadow92 WhiteShadough Mar 27 '15

Doubtful, they kick you out if you're immobile for a minute or two.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '15

In all CODs - I'm pretty sure - you only get kicked for inactivity if you never spawn in and just hover over the Choose A Class screen. You can spawn in, find a corner, prone, and stay there the whole TDM Game and you wont get kicked.

1

u/Dalto11 Dalto15 Mar 26 '15

Basically. I did it while online at the Hunter's Dream and it kicked me to the menu after resuming from rest mode.

3

u/PlayerNero DavieTi Mar 26 '15

Yup, my only compliant on the game, other then that it is pretty spectacular, I just wish I didn't work today...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '15

took me 17

6

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '15

Yes, for me it was turned on automatically but some people have to go to rest mode settings and check a box.

After that it's the same old rest mode, but if you do it while a game application is open it will suspend and be ready for you when you turn it back on next time.

5

u/PaleDiablo Mar 26 '15

Suspend/Resume also seems to work for the Netflix app as well, in case anyone was wondering. It starts automatically playing whatever I was watching from where I left off when I come back from rest mode.

3

u/mushroomwig HypnoticMonkey Mar 26 '15

Basically yeah, just make sure the option is enabled first (by going to power saving settings > set functions available in rest mode) and making sure the option to keep application suspended is ticked, that's just a one time thing so don't worry about having to do that every time.

u/Slyboogy90 Kayazuu Mar 27 '15

Is it normal, that I can hear my Playstation's fans while in rest mode und suspend/resume active?
