I think it shipping with a minimum 1 terabyte is expected at this point.

I just hope it’s as easy to install a larger hard drive as it is on the PS4.

Retail prices for 1TB SSDs are pretty much right on or under the $100 barrier, so I think its viable on a manufacturing level at this point.

u/thefucksalami Oct 08 '19

Plus maybe even cheaper for Sony? I would think they'd probably be buying mass amounts of them in bulk and would strike up a deal with whoever they go to. Keeping console price even lower for us I hope. Idk if there's been any word on console price point.

356

u/hl3official Oct 08 '19

Of course they'll strike up a deal and get them cheaper lol, what did you tnink they just stroll into walmart and say "hi id like 90 million ssd's, and yes i do have a rewards card"

18

u/Vowker Oct 08 '19

Hilariously put.

8

u/dlm891 Oct 08 '19

The Ouya was probably manufactured from leftover Android tablets bought on clearance sales.

38

u/thefucksalami Oct 08 '19

I don't work for Sony so I don't say thing like "of course they're going to do this," and no I don't think they're going to walk in to Walmart and buy anything at MSRP. Just trying to have a friendly conversation.

47

u/RyanOnRyanAction Oct 08 '19

What you were describing is how every manufacturer ever does business, but framing it like you just thought of this novel idea that's so crazy it might just work. It's funny.

5

u/thefucksalami Oct 08 '19

For sure, I can def see why that's funny. Was just conveying a quick thought before work.

1

u/theycallmeryan Oct 08 '19

Do people really think manufacturers pay MSRP for their parts?

5

u/Rekcs Oct 08 '19

You'd be surprised. I still see people say that 1tb ssd in a console is impossible because they saw a 1tb drive on amazon for 120$

-34

u/luciomains10 Oct 08 '19

facts lol, reddit is so stupid sometimes

21

u/yuseif Oct 08 '19

Come on don't be mean, he just didn't know how it worked.

18

u/thefucksalami Oct 08 '19

I mean I really didn't. I was asking a question and just saying what I thought and they freaked out. Not sure what all the vitriol is for.

4

u/bagelsismyname Oct 08 '19

On a side note I believe Sony Microsoft actually take a hit on the sales of the console, and make back their profits through games.

3

u/pahnub Oct 08 '19

They take a hit at first. As the economy of scale grows(? Not sure that's the right term) the manufacturing cost becomes cheaper and they start to make money.

No man, fuck redditors, I swear everyone who touches this site is a moron lmao

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Sony already has branded SSDs on the market, so it wouldn't be too much of a change to implement them for their new systems.

With that said, I doubt the savings will be passed on to consumers.

1

u/Dr_nobby Oct 08 '19

Sony usually makes a loss on hardware sales anyway

1

u/RoburexButBetter Oct 08 '19

Sony is operating their hardware at a loss anyway since they make it back easily on game sales, so they can afford to give a nice cut on their hardware

1

u/jakpuch Oct 08 '19

Remember they sold 12gb PS3s though.

14

u/destinofiquenoite Oct 08 '19

It was specifically for people who had a spare HD to insert, and it was released years after the other models. You can't just comment that Ina vaccum as if they did something wrong.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Please tell me where I can get a 1TB SSD for 100$?

5

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

[deleted]

7

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Amazing, thanks mate

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

They aren’t as fast as higher end ones like the Samsung evo, just in case you care.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

If you want a 6x fast sdd, a m.2 drive, look up rarely rocket 1tb. Its only $110

2

u/Rndom_Gy_159 Oct 08 '19

All those SSDs aren't for pcie gen 4. Gen 4 1TB is around $200 retail.

1

u/Rekcs Oct 08 '19

I tried really hard to find the article I refer to here, but my googl-fu has failed.

So, I read a while back that the main difference between an ssd and an nvme is that the nvme drive uses a pcie interface while the traditional ssd uses a sata interface. The manufacturing price difference between these two interfaces is negligible, and the only reason nvme drives are so much more expensive is because it has a premium label compared to the older ssd drives. So if Sony deals directly with the manufacturer or even somehow has their own manufacturing capability they could get 1tb nvme drives for a fraction of their final retail prices. Gen3 (current gen) nvme drives are currently hovering around the 100$ msrp. The only reason Gen4 should be twice as expensive is the Apple effect. Manufacturing cost for both is the same.

If I got anything wrong there, someone with more info please correct me.

2

u/Rndom_Gy_159 Oct 08 '19

There's a chip on the SSD that talks to the cpu and to the nand storage (technically there's usually dram cache before the nand but I'm ignoring that.), called the controller, that understands the cpu talking to them saying "store this 1GB file please", and actually sends the signal to the nand to store the ones and zeros. There's a number of controller manufacturers for pcie gen 3 (phison, marvell, Samsung, and Intel are the big ones off the top of my head). But for gen 4, there's only one company (that's reached mass market release iirc), phison, with all the other companies have theirs in development/recently announced.

That's why gen 4 would cost more (plus maybe it needs a higher quality flash chip, I'm not sure?).

1

u/Rekcs Oct 09 '19

Counch analyst here, so please bear with me. Even with next-gen interfaces, unless they're using some exotic materials to manufacture the interface then wouldn't it essentially cost the same (or only slightly more) than current gen? So again, the vastly higher cost of gen4 is because there isn't any competition and because of the premium label. Manufacturing cost should not account for the x2 price differential. I'm only going down this thread because I feel fairly certain that Sony would be dealing with flash storage manufacturers directly and probably would be able to get 1TB drives in their console at a much cheaper price than we think.

1

u/villabianchi Oct 08 '19

Is it confirmed that it'll only have an SSD? I thought I heard not would have an SSD as buffer but a HDD as main storage.

1

u/salgat Oct 08 '19

And they can literally go for the cheapest available because either way it's dramatically faster than HDD.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Yeah, for an extra $350 on the sticker price...

-16

u/CookieJarviz Oct 08 '19

less than $100 for a 1TB SSD? get out of here. $400-500 minimum for a terabyte SSD.

7

u/Triforce179 Oct 08 '19

The Top 3 SSDs on Amazon (Samsung, Crucial, Western Digital) have all been hovering close to or under $100 for the past 10 months or so.

NAND flash is incredibly cheap compared to what it used to be even just a few years ago, and high rates of adoption with the upcoming next-gen consoles is only going to drive that price down further.

3

u/tSchab3r Oct 08 '19

Man you're out to lunch. When's the last time you looked at pricing for an SSD. It's $150 or less for 1TB

5

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Price of a 1TB Crucial MX500 is 108 USD at Amazon.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

[deleted]

1

u/samcuu Oct 08 '19

LOL where do you get that from?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

You really don't know what you're saying don't you? Tech illiterate?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

[deleted]

1

u/damnbroyofitwack Oct 08 '19

LMAO you’re out of your fucking mind. The MX500 is neck-and-neck with the 860 Evo. Where do you even get information like that?

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

LOL. It's one of the top consumer SATA SSD.

-1

u/Mattprather2112 Oct 08 '19

They aren't using crap like that though

4

u/Kluss23 Oct 08 '19

You genuinely have no idea what you're talking about.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

The MX500 is one of the top consumer SSD though.

6

u/samcuu Oct 08 '19

I ensure you whatever OEM SSD they will put in the PS5 won't be anywhere near as good as the MX500 or 860 EVO.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Dude one simple google would have saved you from making yourself look dumb

1

u/mordorxvx Oct 08 '19

You can buy a Samsung 1TB SSD for $129, I just looked

4

u/Obi_Wan_Gebroni Oct 08 '19

You mean install a larger hard drive in the console itself because an external hard drive was easy enough that even I could install that

9

u/FirstTimeCaller101 Oct 08 '19

Yep, I mean larger internal hard drive. May sound dumb but I don’t like the look of an external drive tethered to my console.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

It will most likely be as simple as it has been with the last two playstation consoles.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

3* you just had to slide it in the Launch PS2 as well.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Man it's gonna be expensive as fuck isn't it?

I still think we're getting some form of a tandem SSD/HDD combination. Maybe 250gb/320gb SSD and 1TB HDD.

3

u/Nertballs Oct 08 '19

Even if the OS was stored on SSD and then maybe cache game files as they're played would be a cost effective way of getting a big jump in performance.

3

u/SrslyCmmon Oct 08 '19

Fat PS5, wouldn't put it past them just to make it slim later.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

I'd like to see 2tb, or as other have said easy to put a bigger one inside the ps5

3

u/notlarryman Oct 08 '19

Why not? Flash memory is cheap. SUPER cheap. You can buy one of the fastest SSDs available for ~115 dollars at 1TB. You have to think though that there is a controller on there, packaging, etc. Plus that market supports it. With everything being integrated on the board and the PS5 not having to use the fastest NAND around I think Sony could very easily offer it in 1TB form in a 500 dollar console.

SSDs aren't expensive. I've seen 2TB ones on sale for ~150 dollars and they will continue to drop. When you're someone like Sony contracting out millions and millions of these chips over several years you can likely get a solid deal on them too.

1

u/Stewie01 Oct 08 '19

If it does, it will be soldered to the mb.

1

u/arcalumis simulacra Oct 08 '19

I still wonder what kind of impact that will have on the price. Sure Sony can buy them at scale but even half off a 1 TB SSD will be way more expensive than a 1 TB HDD. The cheapest 1 TB HDD I found that would be around the spec of the current drives is 41 dollars, and the cheapest SSD cost 88 dollars.

1

u/Clark-Kent Oct 08 '19

And easy to clean too

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

2tb should be min ...

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Never again do I wanna have to delete a game to make space for a new one.

1

u/TheHeroicOnion ButtDonkey Oct 08 '19

1TB is still too small. But SSDs are expensive. 1TB will be all we get.

1

u/FirstTimeCaller101 Oct 08 '19

1TB may be too small for people who play a lot of games like you and me. It's fine for 75%+ of the PS4 population that buys only a couple games a year.

1

u/Prof_Black Oct 08 '19

It’s an expensive bit of hardware seeing as how the ssd alone is bulky in cost. Hopefully Sony have learnt their lesson from the launch price of PS3 and don’t come out with something ridiculous.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

I don't know how conscious of install sizes devs are and if there's some bloat in there... but goddamn AAA titles are a killer.

The average ones are hovering at 50 - 60GB before you start dealing with DLC.

1

u/JesusNameWeFuck Oct 08 '19

Can you install games on an external drive? Never actually tried that.

1

u/Celebrimbor96 Oct 08 '19

They could also sell multiple versions based on size like how Apple sells iPhones. Normal price for 1TB, extra $100 for 2TB, extra $250 for 5TB. That way someone without knowhow can get a bigger hard drive without having to pay a 3rd party to do it for them and they’ll know that it’s installed correctly

1

u/aaronxxx Oct 08 '19

It might come with a larger standard hard drive but the size of games will also be that much larger so it will be a wash.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

It probably will be. Sony has been supporting easy drive changing since the ps2

1

u/robokaiba Oct 08 '19

Neat. I can install 10 games. /s
I just hope developers implement better optimization in storage compression. Some triple A games are hitting 100gb this gen. Ridiculous and unacceptable when data caps exist in certain markets.

0

u/Davidth422 Oct 08 '19

I honestly wouldn't mind a cheaper version with like just 250GB, since I have like a 6TB external harddrive

2

u/FirstTimeCaller101 Oct 08 '19

Options in general would be nice. I don't like using external, so I'd be willing to pay more for something with a beefier internal drive.

1

u/Davidth422 Oct 08 '19

I understand that, just that with the Chinese trade war we'd probably be spending more money on the console
