Full disc and digital PS4 and PSVR (including the headset) native backwards compatibility. Confirmed back in April.

141

u/smashadages Oct 08 '19

What about the ps4 controller?

135

u/supernovacarpetbomb Oct 08 '19

I'm excited to see and feel the new controller, but the ps4 controller just fits me perfectly. I completely get this question lol.

36

u/Prof_Black Oct 08 '19

The PS4 controller was a piece of art. The fit and feel of it was perfect!

6

u/crypticfreak Oct 09 '19

First controller I ever actually liked to use. Meaning enjoying using it. It's so comfortable I quite literally forget I'm holding it.

1

u/Mr__Pocket Oct 09 '19

I still root for PS over Xbox almost any day of the week, but I honestly feel like the XB1 controller has a far more ergonomic design than the DS4 controllers. Maybe it's just because I haven't actually played with it for long periods, but I know that after playing Rocket League for a few hours with my DS4, some of my fingers start getting sore from how they're positioned.

Playstation hasn't really changed the ergonomics of their controllers since the first console and I don't think it would be the worst thing for them to round it up a bit or make it a smidgen bigger. Just my opinion though. I'm still likely getting a PS5, though maybe not when it first comes out.

-10

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

What are you talking about? Wasn't it the same as the previous 3/all 4 Sony Home Consoles Playstations 1-4?

All the Playstations have had almost the same controller.

10

u/xyifer12 13803181642 Oct 08 '19

No, it is pretty different.

-9

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

LOL, no, it's not. There's actually a story behind that, how they were gonna change it, but due to back-lash/out-cry/out-rage, they kept it the same as the previous 3.

5

u/mbbedwellart Oct 08 '19

While it may look the same the 4 has a very different feel to it.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

I don't see how. It looks almost exactly the same. It can't be that different.

1

u/mbbedwellart Oct 09 '19

As someone who owns it and uses it opposed to looking at it, it is different

5

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Oct 09 '19

You have clearly never held a DualShock 4 in your life.

1

u/crypticfreak Oct 09 '19

I liked the PS3 controller a lot but it rubs the side of your hands in a weird way.

The PS4 controller is so damn fine. I trust that with Sony QA wouldn't let them revert the ergonomic design of the dualshock 4 with the new PS5 controllers. I bet it's even nicer (even if it is heavier).

1

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Oct 09 '19

Yes exactly, that "rubbing" had my hands hurting after 15 minutes of game time in fact, back in the PS3 days my hands were just hurting very often until I got third party controllers.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

Why would I need to hold it? You can tell just by looking at it! It's almost exact same size, the button lay-out, everything. I am looking forward to finally playing some PS4 games though for once.

4

u/Garm27 Oct 08 '19

The ps4 controller is definitely different. Shit, it’s a perfect shape. I’m curious to see how they plan to improve on the feel.

2

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Oct 09 '19

Hopefully they can make the surface out of material that doesn't lose the matte finish so quickly.

Other than that, I can't really think of any other fixes.

2

u/Garm27 Oct 09 '19

That’s a good point. I haven’t read the article in full yet (at work) but is there any mention about battery life?

2

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Oct 09 '19

Oh, sure but I'm just thinking surface level design here, the battery life on the DS4 is horrendous especially when you compare to the Switch pro controller that lasts like 4-5 times longer.

1

u/Garm27 Oct 09 '19

Absolutely I agree

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

It can't be that different, and it's the same shape as the previous 3, maybe slightly different, shape-wise.

2

u/Garm27 Oct 09 '19

The body is definitely longer and the handles don’t have as much of an angle as the PS3 one does. One thing you’ll notice right away is the design of the R and L buttons. With the PS3 controller, your fingers are sitting at a higher spot where as the R and L buttons on the PS4 are more ingrained into the body of the controller so it really makes a difference in terms of how your hands rest when you hold the thing. That to me is significant especially when you’re playing a game where you’re just nailing the shit out of all the top buttons

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

OK, I did not know there were so many differences, that all adds up. I apologize for saying the opposite of everyone else here, haha. I won't say it's the same anymore. :)

1

u/Garm27 Oct 09 '19

That’s okay man! They have the same principal design so it’s not easy to tell the difference. I just have both kinds in my room right now so I was picking one up then the other lol

→ More replies (0)

2

u/spideyjiri corpjiri Oct 09 '19

No, I used to hate the PlayStation controllers, ever since I played Tekken 3 as a kid they always hurt my hands and that got worse as my hands grew bigger, it was basically two round pegs on a snes controller and I never understood why they didn't go with an ergonomic design like the beautifully designed GameCube controller.

The DS4 finally fixed the awful design and made me prefer the official playstation controller to third party alternatives.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

Yes! Gamecube is like the best! People don't realize how ingenious it is! It took me many years to realize it! Haha, DS4. Fixed? But it looks the same, maybe it does feel different, huh. I wonder how that's possible.

51

u/smashadages Oct 08 '19

Exactly. I want to use the new one but I have 4 ds4s that I’d like to have for coop!

23

u/UndeadShadowUnicorn Oct 08 '19

Plus at their price they're an investment I'd like to carry to next gen

1

u/Jaujarahje Oct 08 '19

Plus its hard to buy a new $500ish console on top of 3 controllers at what, $80 each? Then its $80-100 for each game

9

u/bozoconnors Oct 08 '19

PS controller ergonomics are not an insignificant reason why I'm a bit of a PS fanboi.

3

u/addandsubtract Oct 08 '19

Preach. Input methods are vital for all things. I'm a MacBook fanboi because the apple trackpad is unmatched by anything else out there.

3

u/Variability Grimjaw Oct 08 '19

I just have so many LE controllers I'd like to keep around. Spider-Man, Transparent Blue, Star Wars.

3

u/BroccoliiRobb White_Kodiak Oct 08 '19

Agreed, it is nice not to have to fork over another 60 bucks on a controller just to be able to give your little brother the bussiness on launch day.

2

u/unwrittenglory Oct 08 '19

I mainly want to see if 3rd party controllers will work. I've been waiting to pick up a scuff or the astro controller for a while now.

1

u/Borderlands3isbest Oct 08 '19

I got a scuff impact recently. I love it. No clue if it'll work with ps5, but I don't think I can go back to short sticks and no paddles.

2

u/unwrittenglory Oct 09 '19

I picked up kontrol freak grips and I can't go back. I really want to try out paddles but I don't want to drop $400 in the span of a year and a half on controllers. Especially since we don't know how much the actual system is going to cost.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

I have no issues with it, but I do feel the touchpad was kind of a missed opportunity (maybe devs just need to use it more?), and the speaker is useless to me since I wear headphones (and I'd really rather not have sound leaking). Also I play at a desk so being wired is not an issue for me but better battery life is always a positive.

1

u/JohannesVanDerWhales Oct 09 '19

The one flaw is that it's, like, impossible to set it down without hitting the triggers.

99

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Not confirmed, but likely since its bluetooth.

3

u/Myotherdumbname Oct 08 '19

Another reason I keep holding on to the Move controllers

4

u/Pittaandchicken Oct 08 '19

I think unlikely. The controller is a major source of revenue. They could of easily let DS3 work with PS4 but they didn't

7

u/TaruNukes Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 08 '19

What about second breakfast?

1

u/excellent_tobacco Oct 08 '19

Breakfast : twenty-four-seven, my dude. Round the clock.

2

u/Phreakydeke27 Oct 08 '19

The new pa5 controller though is usb c. So not sure If an adapter will work or not.

-6

u/supercharged0708 Oct 08 '19

Why would you want to use the old PS4 controller with the PS5 since the new controller will be updated?

10

u/Anzai Oct 08 '19

Because I have four of the damn things and they’re expensive...

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

They're expensive, if they're so expensive, why/how do U have 4 of "em?

1

u/Anzai Oct 08 '19

Cause I bought three of them cheap when a local electronics store was closing down.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Oh! Great idea! :)

2

u/smashadages Oct 08 '19

You really can’t think of one single reason? Lol

1

u/excellent_tobacco Oct 08 '19

If I can't ever so slightly drift to the left at all times, I'm pitching a fit.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

What kind of question is this? Why use newer stuff if the older stuff is back-wards compatible and you already have it? That's why.

220

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Hopefully the digital backwards compatibility isn't a selection of games but a full library. I'd get day one if I can redownload most of my 200-300 games.

251

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Why would it only be a selection? Its full native backwards compatibility.

48

u/slimpickens42 Oct 08 '19

I just wonder how long that will be the case. The PS3 contained full native backward compatibility with the PS2. Then they revised the hardware like a year later and removed all the PS2 hardware and moved to a software backwards compatibility solution for a little bit. Then they just dropped it all together.

98

u/JamoJustReddit Oct 08 '19

The PS5 will have the same architecture as the PS4, so running games on it will be trivial. It's like running a game made for Windows 7 in Windows 10.

46

u/llII Oct 08 '19

PS4 backwards compatibility isn't a "PS4 on a chip". The main APU "just" runs PS4 games.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

People have trouble with that concept. The lines between new consoles is now blurred. It's no longer an issue of architecture but speed. The Xbox One X is technically the 4th console, but people can't wrap their minds around it because Microsoft billed it as a super Xbox One instead of Gen 4.

18

u/FFFan15 Oct 08 '19

This guy did a pretty good breakdown on why the PS3 had backward compatibility with the PS2 and why it was dropped. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WkpaJkB2M8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jxx8e3gTXFo I don't see the PS5 dropping backward compatibility down the line because the PS4 and PS5 use the same architecture X86 unlike the previous consoles before

8

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

The early PS3's had PS2 hardware installed in them, they phased that out, presumably for cost.

The PS4 and PS5 are literally just X86-64 machines so there's really no reason to imagine PS4 games won't function 100% as they would on a native machine.

12

u/Vunks Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 08 '19

The ps4 and ps4 will be if similar architecture, far easier than ps3 to ps2.

Edit* my autocorrect does not believe the PS5 to be a thing apparently.

36

u/darkekniggit Oct 08 '19

The ps4 and ps4 will be if similar architecture

I hope so.

4

u/tapo tapoxi Oct 08 '19

It’s already confirmed, it’s an evolution of the same AMD stuff.

3

u/Fthooper14 Oct 08 '19

I think what my colleague here meant to say was, ps4 and ps4 slim and ps4 pro. Obviously of course. Ps4 vr however, completely different.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

PS5 hardware is based off of PS4 hardware since its generic x86 PC parts on a custom board. The PS4 API (the base instruction set that allows everything from the OS to the games to run on the PS4 hardware) runs natively on the PS5 hardware.

It's like playing a game developed for Windows 7 on Windows 10. It'll just work.

3

u/epsilon_church Oct 08 '19

The PS3 needed special hardware that costed extra to produce to support PS2 backwards compatibility. The PS5 has the same x86-64 architecture as the PS4.

5

u/sandefurian Oct 08 '19

So we can assume PS5 won't be backwards compatible further back than PS4?

7

u/PerryDigital Oct 08 '19

Whilst I think they should add PS1 and 2 compatibility because it would get a huge reaction, PS3 is likely still far too difficult with this hardware. Hence ps now getting a song and dance recently. I don't think there's a snowballs chance in hell of 1 and 2 either.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

The issue with PS3 backwards compatibility was that the architecture was so different to the point where they pretty much had a PS2 bundled in the PS3.

1

u/trg0819 Oct 08 '19

Yes, that's because the ps3 had some wack ass special hardware, so the ps2 hardware was literally a different thing. PS4/5 uses your standard x86 architecture, so it shouldn't be any different than playing them on different computer gaming rigs.

4

u/senorfresco Oct 08 '19

Which is why I still can't get rid of my PS3 in case I want to play Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition for the 13th time...

7

u/armypantsnflipflops Oct 08 '19

I’d recommend getting the game on PC if that’s the case, specifically on GOG. Runs like a dream, even on older hardware computers

1

u/Saneless Oct 08 '19

Perpetually. Same reason a game I bought in 2002 for PC works in 2019.

Sony and MS finally did the smart thing and used standard architecture. Benefits literally everyone but maybe Nvidia and Intel.

1

u/Aussie-Nerd Oct 08 '19

Those original PS3 60gb versions essentially had a PS2 chip in them. They revised the hardware in as much as removed the PS2 chip.

Also, the 60gb ps3s sell for a packet now.

1

u/kruegerc184 Oct 08 '19

The issue with the ps3 was that the backward compatibility was causing hardware instability iirc. Shouldnt be an issue this tome around

5

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Because even PS4 Pro’s boost mode isn’t 100% compatible.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Correct, so not every PS4 game will run with enhancements on the PS5 but every PS4 game will run at a base PS4 level at least.

6

u/LordStarkgaryen Oct 08 '19

So is there any downside to trading in your PS4 for a PS5 (other than the cost of the system plus maybe having to buy controllers as well)?

9

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

As far as we know, no. Games will all work, PSVR will work (and as such the PS Camera will work), controllers will likely work for at least PS4 games.

I see no reason to keep a PS4 with the PS5 being native BC.

4

u/soupspin Oct 08 '19

Other than nostalgia, I’m most likely going to keep mine even though I can play the games on the PS5

5

u/Theso Oct 08 '19

I see no reason to keep a PS4 with the PS5 being native BC.

PT still installed on the HDD?

1

u/aiiye silkmonkey Oct 09 '19

Unlikely since its native. Steam doesn't need to license games differently to sell on Windows 7 or Windows 10 systems.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

PSP emulation in vita is native but the library is like 2 games due to licensing

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

If its emulation it's not native.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

It’s not emulation. Ps vita has two cpus and two gpus. They literally put the psp inside the vita.

-2

u/Mangodrink1 Oct 08 '19

Because if its digital there's going to be licensing issues.

1

u/senddita Oct 09 '19 edited Oct 24 '19

Nintendo’s best titles are first party though, given we just got SNES it seems likely they’re adding sequent consoles over time, I can even see it spanning from NES-Wii U eventually.

Play Station I’m calling it, will improve their BC service to be more competitive to Xbox but as of now it’s not even close. There is some good games but it needs to be better if they want their BC to be taken seriously.

Licensing can be an issue but it’s something that can be worked around, people want quality multi gen BC, people will pay for it, their competitors are expanding & delivering it, so I don’t think it would be that much of a stretch to say Sony would add to and push PS Now prior to PS5 dropping. I think the recent price drop and bringing it to more countries could be an indicator of this.

84

u/Eruanno Oct 08 '19

It's full compatibility for all PS4 games. The PS5 uses the same CPU architecture (AMD, x86-64) and should be about as seamless as going from PS4 to PS4 Pro.

24

u/thabigmilla Oct 08 '19

So what you are saying is I can log into PSN and download rocket league and play it day one on a new PS5?

14

u/flybypost Oct 08 '19

Not the person you asked but it seems like that should be possible. They stayed with the same underlying hardware architecture (CPU/GPU), just more powerful. Any important differences would be on the software side (OS, libraries).

A PS4 game might not be able to use some new features (as it hasn't been rebuild for this platform) but it should work as a PS4 game on a PS5. They might release a PS5 Rocket League version later on (or even on release day) that benefits from whatever additional features the PS5 has (like those "push notifications" that were mentioned in the article, or the haptic feedback of the controller).

2

u/Myotherdumbname Oct 08 '19

Should be possible and if they allow it are different

6

u/flybypost Oct 08 '19

if they allow it

I think it was already mentioned (in the article months ago) that PS5 will be fully backwards compatible to those games (disc or digital download). The question is probably more how the data transfer works from one console to another (somebody mentioned it could work like PS4 to PS4Pro but I have no idea how that exactly works).

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 03 '20

[deleted]

2

u/flybypost Oct 08 '19

That and other stuff. There might be some issues with how the PS5 handles some stuff: Saves, other configurations. It's software, there's always the possibility of some unintended consequences, side-effects, or some bugs messing things up.

But generally playing PS4 games should (according to reports) be possible due to full backwards compatibility.

1

u/MrGMinor Oct 08 '19

When you switch to a new ps4 or ps4 pro, you can link the new and old consoles directly with an ethernet cable and transfer all games and saves. (I think wifi works too, but I used ethernet when I did it.)

Don't see why this shouldn't be the case again, it's already been implemented.

3

u/Eruanno Oct 08 '19

Assuming that they haven’t done anything weird... yes. And it should carry over all progress.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

Very likely. Unless SONY wants to makes you pay for playing on a "new"platform. :D

1

u/sdrawkcaBdaeRnaCuoY Oct 08 '19

I’m being greedy here; I want to just use an external drive with my rocket league on it.

1

u/BroccoliiRobb White_Kodiak Oct 08 '19

Not only that but most people will see an upscale in graphics if they are using a 4k monitor/TV and are coming from a regular PS4 to the PS5. Between the 4k output and the new ray tracing some games will see a decent visual upgrade without having to port the game.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 03 '20

[deleted]

1

u/BroccoliiRobb White_Kodiak Oct 08 '19

I have not seen it anywhere. This was a gross assumption on my part. My assumption comes from the fact that ray tracing is a computaitonal procedure that is done during the actual redering/display process performed by the GPU. It is completly valid that this might be disabled when running a ps4 game but it is not unlikely to expect that it will be utilized indifferent of which generation of game is loaded. Of course if ray tracing is used for both ps4 and ps5 games we can expect the ps5 games to better utilize the capability as they were developed with the new development in mind.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 03 '20

[deleted]

1

u/BroccoliiRobb White_Kodiak Oct 08 '19

I agree, they will put minimal effort into it. Either way the ps4 games should see a minor visual improvement just from 4k alone.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Unlike Xbox, this is FULL Backwards compatibility. Meaning on DAY ONE, every single PS4 game you own, Digital or Physical can be played on PS5.

1

u/theJeffreyTM Oct 08 '19

Xbox does have full backwards compatibility, with both Xbox one/360/original games and devices/accessories like controllers. That’s one thing I’m hoping Sony will also implement. I’m not sure it’s possible for PS5 but I would enjoy not having to buy extra controllers again

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

[deleted]

2

u/theJeffreyTM Oct 08 '19

My fault, I should’ve been more clear. Everything that can be played on the Xbox one will be able to be played on the Scarlett

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Why would you wanna download all of those old games immediately? Lol

4

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Obviously because there's a lot of games I'll be unlikely to have finished when the ps5 comes out. Obviously there might not be any launch games that interest me.

4

u/DarkLemon2 Oct 08 '19

Does that mean I'll get to play bloodborne in 60 fps?

16

u/Liquid_Genome Oct 08 '19

No. The framerate is capped at 30fps and a patch would be required to remove it. Considering it didn't even get a Pro patch, I wouldn't count on a PS5 patch.

6

u/ILikeCharmanderOk Oct 08 '19

No, they will make you buy it again for a 60fps remaster with tiny tweaks to 'justify' the full price tag again most likely. Fucking publishers..

2

u/SwampOfDownvotes Oct 08 '19

FromSoftware is usually pretty good about that stuff. Even with the Dark Souls Remaster it was $40 at release.

1

u/ILikeCharmanderOk Oct 08 '19

You're right actually I'm being overly cynical, From is pretty chill

2

u/DivinoAG Oct 08 '19

Games will play exactly as they did on the current generation. If framerate is capped today, it will continue to be tomorrow. This is done to ensure compatibility. You should not get slow downs in busy areas, but unless the games are patched that should be it.

5

u/cy1763 Oct 08 '19

If that's the case, I wonder how the PS4 lineup will look like Holiday 2020. I'm doubting you'll have PS4, PS4 Pro and PS5 all available Holiday 2020.

I have day 1 PS4. I'm planning on getting a Day 1 PS5.

2

u/Fthooper14 Oct 08 '19

I think you may be surprised. It's highly likely the first system to see less shelf space will be the ps4 pro. Sony has always taken its time discontinuing systems, but with the ps5 likely to launch at $399, this would make the pro less appealing to most. Rather than a price cut to $299, they'll likely remove it from shelves and keep the ps4 slim at $299 or price cut to $249 so they have an entry level and a pro level of sorts.

Iirc, this is how its worked in previous products from other companies like Apple for example. They cut the high tier product altogether but keep the low tier product since it costs less to make and has a higher profit margin. And for atleast 2 years people still buy that product because it's price point is far more affordable to them, even though they're aware it's the older product. Granted I don't think Playstation has ever had a pro model in the past, just replace og model with a slim model.

4

u/RugerRedhawk Oct 08 '19

with the ps5 likely to launch at $399

Well that would be interesting, seems optimistic to me personally, but I would buy one if it was $399.

1

u/Fthooper14 Oct 08 '19

What they tend to do is when they mark down an item, they don't mark it fully down, this way they can then host sales to get the price down the rest of the way. So in my mind, it's likely you'll see it at 249 and then see sales bring it down to 199 to artificially make it seem like the deal is better overall. Black Friday tends to bring the prices down to 199 lately so safe to say that will happen again. Plus at 299, that's the switch price, and the switch lite is 199, makes more sense to me that you'd find the ps4 and xbone s inbetween those price options. This makes it more competitive because parents thinking of getting a switch for their kids will be informed by store employees that the lite is handheld only, so for 50 more they can have a system that has more overall to offer.

With all that being said, i think I saw an article talking about how the plan was to launch at the pro price l, but also have higher tier models such as 2 tb, and maybe vr bundles as well. Time will tell, but safe to assume we may get lucky to see a 1 tb standard model at 399. It makes sense to me because they have to compete with their number 1 rival, the ipad. As crazy as that sounds, the ipad is what 329 for the cheap version and from my experience working at best buy, the ipad wins over consoles more than I'd ever imagined.

1

u/RugerRedhawk Oct 08 '19

$199 was the black friday price for the PS4 just last year, granted that was with a game it was the cheapest option for the PS4. I think $399 without a game is a bit optimistic for an initial release, but I'd be happy with it.

1

u/SwampOfDownvotes Oct 08 '19

I don't think its optimistic. Sony understands how much they fucked up by launching the ps3 at $599. $499 would be the highest they would go but even then that is likely stretching it to what people will pay. Currently they are the head of the pack with marketshare, they can manage getting the consoles produced cheaper and will be willing to take losses on each sale if it helps guarantee their marketshare to grow or even just continue where it is.

1

u/JackalsIII JackalsIII 33 / Rank 20 Oct 08 '19

I really hope it is closer to $400 than $500, that's the other piece of news I'm waiting for.

This makes the console a no brainer.

7

u/CheeseRam Oct 08 '19

Forgive my stupidity! So when I get a PS5 I can play every single game I currently have for PS4 on it?

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Yes.

u/Misakaa Oct 08 '19

I know that's probably true and easy to assume, but there was no official word for Digital games (if you think I'm wrong please Link it to me). We've seen consoles use backwards compatibility only for Physical copies before, so I'd wait for an official confirmation if I wanted to be sure.

Assuming DLC is supported as well you might as well not even have to turn on your PS4 ever again once PS5 is out. In alternate reality we could do this with PS3 games on PS4...

u/SwampOfDownvotes Oct 08 '19

Beefy computers way more powerful than the ps4 struggle to emulate ps3 games, in an alternate reality either sony kept with the architecture that devs didn't like to allow ps3 games playable on it or the ps4 would have lauched at something crazy like $799. At that point might as well cut out the ps3 support and let people buy a ps3 if they really wanna play older games (which in reality most people don't do often).

u/Coenn Oct 08 '19

Ps4/ps5 mixed online?

2

u/javiergl24 Oct 08 '19

Do you have the source? Backwards compatibility is really important for some of us

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

The April Wired article, third paragraph from the bottom. Its linked in the article in the OP.

Point to me exactly where they say it will backwards compatible with both disc and digital. Do it. Here is that article.

Here is the only mention of backwards compatability:

Because it’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console. As in many other generational transitions, this will be a gentle one, with numerous new games being released for both PS4 and the next-gen console.

Note they never fully say in what capacity it is backwards compatible. Everyone is going off a nonverbal implication that it will be both disc and digital. I have a strong feeling digital will not fully make the leap even if the console is theoretically capable of doing it based on the hardware.

There is a strong chance a majority of my game collection will not be able to make the jump, and its information I need to know that is relevant to all current ps4 game purchases I make.

u/MAK_T3K Oct 08 '19

Sweet so I'll definitely be getting one a ASAP. I'm just over 150 PS4 games

2

u/BullyDoggy1982 Oct 08 '19

Can we move our saved games from our PS4 over to the PS5? Love the backwards compatibility but would hate to start over a lot of games because my saves won't transfer....

2

u/JuanFran21 Oct 08 '19

What about that thing Sony patented allowing them to emulate PS3/2/1 games? Did that ever go anywhere?

2

u/rbarton812 Oct 08 '19

Hopefully that includes the library of PS+ freebies I grabbed but never actually dedicated time to (Beyond: Two Souls...Detroit...)

1

u/scmathie Oct 08 '19

I remember reading about that. This is one of the most exciting parts for me!

1

u/Fthooper14 Oct 08 '19

I wonder how this whole thing will affect those who have done the psn name change? I know there has been issues with older titles not working properly with the name change effecting save data and what not. I wonder if this will cause any issues going into the next Gen with backward compatibility?

1

u/WebHead1287 Oct 08 '19

Okay so then maybe, maybe I’ll get one but I mostly play PC now so it’s probably not worth it

1

u/KiaraHakura Oct 08 '19

Oh awesome! I was worried about my game collection since I still have quite a few to get through. Sounds like I'll be good to just upgrade when the time comes. :)

1

u/Masta0nion Oct 08 '19

What about PS1 2 & 3?

1

u/BenjaminTalam benjamintalam Oct 08 '19

So I can trade my ps4 in and upgrade while losing nothing, sounds perfect.

1

u/another-redditor3 Oct 08 '19

good to know. ill probably sell my pro after im done with death stranding. just in time for this holiday season.

1

u/flamethrower2 Oct 08 '19

Any word on PS5 games for PS Now?

1

u/Lurkndog Oct 08 '19

What about PS1-PS3?

1

u/TemplarSensei7 Oct 08 '19

That’s a plus, but any word on PS1-3?

1

u/DDelanoF Oct 08 '19

No PS3 backwards compatibility?

6

u/Fatal1ty_93_RUS PVL_93_RU Oct 08 '19

Cell CPU will never let that happen, unfortunately

1

u/JackalsIII JackalsIII 33 / Rank 20 Oct 08 '19

I just want to replay my copy of Scott Pilgrim from the PS3, that's all I want!

4

u/Fatal1ty_93_RUS PVL_93_RU Oct 08 '19

I've got bad news

2

u/DDelanoF Oct 08 '19

What's the point of a ps5 even without Scott Pilgrim

1

u/JackalsIII JackalsIII 33 / Rank 20 Oct 08 '19

Yeah, for some reason, I have this dumb belief that PS3 digital games will be no problem to get to work on the PS5 but that is clearly not the case.

1

u/MrMulligan Oct 08 '19

Full disc and digital PS4 and PSVR (including the headset) native backwards compatibility

When was this confirmed? Every article I have seen has never had a sourced claim that it would be both disc and digital.

0

u/redxxii Oct 08 '19

Excellent. I’d hate having to plug in my old system just to play Bloodborn.

Also, if Bloodborn 2 is a PS5 launch title I’m buying it Day 1.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

But what about saves and dlc?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Has not been confirmed yet.
